2023.06.05 07:43 Mr-Planet 2 Months. 3500 Miles Later // Rivian R1T Thoughts, Concerns & Prayers (Review/First Impression)

2 Months. 3500 Miles Later // Rivian R1T Thoughts, Concerns & Prayers (Review/First Impression)
Two months ago my life changed for the better when I got my R1T. Let me just say; I love this truck, I love this truck, I love this truck. The R1T is also my first-ever EV. After two months and 3500 miles, I'm here to tell you all that I have loved, hated, and everything in between. I hope this can be helpful for anyone who is considering making the jump to the Rivian family / EV world.
Last Vehicle: 2020 Ford Escape SE Hybrid
Rivian Config: 2023 Rivian R1T, Adv. Pkg., Quad Motor, Ocean Coast/Dark Ash Wood, Rivian Blue, 21" Wheels
First Thoughts
-Wow. This truck is stunning. I never did a First Mile (I know that was dumb, but I recommend everyone do a First Mile). But holy cow the inside of this truck is a work of art.
-Dang, this thing is Fast!! Pulling out of the SC and first time letting loose a little and Holy S&#%! This is a truck that drives like a sports car.
-The sound system is incredible. I love listening to music in this rig, it just sounds so good.
-Love my colointerior combo. Definitely a little worried about keeping it clean in the long run, but I'm hopeful.
Pros
-The acceleration. This truck has made me a speed demon. You'll love showing off launches to your friends, but no one ever talks about all the solo launches you'll do owning this thing. Definitely have broken my previous land speed record as well. On a practical level, the truck's acceleration is great when you need to speed up and pass someone or get to speed on an on-ramp.
-The ride is incredibly smooth. While the truck may drive like a sports car, it certainly rides like a truck. Roomy inside for all passengers. Even smooth off-road once you kick it into off-road mode. Mostly have only played with All Purpose, Sport, and Off-Road: Auto. Excited to play with those more, but honestly it's just truly amazing how differently the truck handles in different modes. It's like driving a whole new vehicle each time.
-No gas!!! I have an L2 charger at home and use DCFC for road trips. Around town with the L2 charger is amazing. The savings I've had for owning a similar-sized ICE truck are insane. No oil changes, much less maintenance. Definitely loving the EV lifestyle so far.
-Holy storage Batman. Storage everywhere!! Frunk, Gear Tunnel, Bed, Bed Compartment, Back Seat Compartment. I don't think I've come close to filling up this truck once yet on any of our trips.
-The Tech in this truck is amazing. I love the big multiple screens/displays. Clear and easy to see. Same for all the cameras. The top-down view is amazing for parking. I was worried about parking a truck around the city, but the cameras make it a breeze. Fast phone chargers. 120v outlets everywhere. Air compressor in the bed. This truck is a tech masterpiece. Always a crowd pleaser, some party trick to show off.
-OTA updates are the future for vehicles! The truck has gotten a handful of updates since I purchased it. Super cool to see new features getting added and customer concerns get addressed.
-I drive a cool car now. I really didn't expect this part, but people on the street will turn their heads. People will come up to me in parking lots or at chargers and talk about the truck. I even caught one guy reversing down my street to come to talk to me about it. It's a really fun experience.
Cons
-The A/C... I can't say it doesn't work, because it does. Just not consistently? I've felt it blow the absolute coldest of air. But every once and a while; on really hot days, the truck refuses to do anything but blow hot air. No amount of fussing with the settings or doing resets seems to fix it. I have a ticket open with my SC to fix it and will report back. Hoping they find something, but reading other Reddit/forum posts makes me not so hopeful. The truck can get really unbearable on 100+ degree days and makes traveling with the pups somewhat scary. Hopefully, they fix this at my appointment!
-Lack of RAN / having to use crappy charging networks. At home, I'm in bliss. I plug my truck in each night and wake up with a nice charged battery. Road trips so far have been hit or miss. It doesn't ever seem like I go anywhere with a RAN charger, so I'm forced to use lesser charging networks. Some days this works out fine: pull up, plug in, charge quickly, and be on your way. Other days are filled with trouble: broken equipment, offline stations, long lines, rude drivers, throttled charges, disconnecting chargers, etc. I really long for the day I get to use a RAN charger.
-Range Anxiety is real. I do my best to overcome in my transition to EV life, but it's definitely hard coming from a Hybrid that could 600mi in a tank. I think with everything in regards to EVs it's best to think of them as their own new kind of vehicle rather than constantly comparing them to ICE vehicles.
-All these accessories are so expensive. I know the truck has a high price tag itself, so if you can afford that you shouldn't complain, but it still hurts. $60+ for a front license plate holder clamp. Let alone all the stuff I want to buy for camping now...
-I don't looooove my wheels and I think it's too expensive to change that now. Wish I got the 20" wheels, but went for the 21's for range. I hate the look of them. Took the plastic covers off and that helps a lot, but still not my favorite looking wheel and super expensive to change.
-You're essentially buying a $100k truck from a start-up. Fingers crossed they don't go under. But also a slim amount of SCs means long wait times for appointments in busy areas. Everyone at Rivian I've dealt with has been super nice to be fair.
Trips Include
Various Day Trips, LA to the Desert / LA Nat'l Forrest
LA to Coachella and Back (in a Single Day on a Single Charge!)
LA to San Diego and Back
LA to San Gregorio to SF to LA (most recent, longest trip)
First-Time EV Thoughts // Rivian Fun Stories // Future Plans // Closing Thoughts
-Fast Charging really isn't that bad of an experience when everything works properly and the charger is in a decent spot. Everyone groans about charging on the go, it's the thing I get asked about the most by non-EV owners. Yes, I know getting gas only takes 10 minutes tops. But when you can pull up with no line to a 350kw charger and have it start working right away; you can recharge the truck up to 80% in under 45 min. On trips you try and plan the charge stop around a meal or somewhere you can go shopping, and it's fine. You get 3-5 hours of drive time per charge and there's no reason I wouldn't want to stop after that time anyway. A good charger has a bathroom, restaurant/store, and trash can nearby (bonus points for chargers with doggie areas).
-Plug in at your destination when traveling, even if it's just the L1 Charger and if it's only overnight. Trust me, get into the habit of doing it every time you travel. 20-30 miles in your battery can mean the difference between making it to a 50kw charger or a 350kw charger 25 miles further down the highway. I saw someone in here say ABC once, Always Be Charging. It's a good adage for having an EV at home, but I feel like it really rings true on road trips. If you stop somewhere and there's a fast charger there's really no reason not to plug in and charger while you're there.
-I don't understand why EV chargers aren't treated more like gas stations. Seems like it'd be a good opportunity for them to expand. It would also be nice for charging areas to be shaded as generally, you see someone waiting in their car having to run the A/C. Hopefully, we see public charging stations improve as more people get EVs.
-I'm actually kind of excited for Ford drivers to start using Tesla chargers. You always see no wait at SuperChargers and a long line at the non-tesla chargers when I travel in California. Hopefully, that will help clear up some of the CCS chargers for the rest of us.
-Just because it's an EV Truck, doesn't mean it's not a truck MPGe-wise. Yes, I save a TON of money on fuel compared to let's say a Tacoma. But that doesn't mean that I pay the same in electricity as a Chevy Bolt driver. The R1T makes sense for me and my lifestyle. I can use the truck for work and personal life to its full extent. However, I don't think this is the perfect EV for every first-time EV owner.
-I kill so many bugs now. It's crazy. Every drive is a slaughter. But the real question is, where do EV drivers get windshield cleaners like at the gas stations? They never seem to have them at chargers.
-Someone once said I was like Night Rider driving my R1T, I thought that was really funny. My second best experience was pulling up to a truck stop in the middle of the desert and popping the frunk surrounded by 4x4 ICE pickups.
-I really want to buy a pop-up tent for the back of my truck. My thoughts are for future travel having a fast camp option. How do you like to camp out of your R1T, what are your must haves? For me, I love the idea of getting an RV spot and charging off the hook-up. Having a tent that is set up quickly would be ideal. I'd probably also want to bring a small electric kitchen and a few chairs to eat at the tailgate. Thinking this would be a greater initial investment, but cheaper than getting hotels with chargers; especially since I often travel with 1-3 dogs in the truck with me :)
-I think this truck is my favorite thing I've ever owned. It's certainly my favorite vehicle, but man this truck is something else. I just love driving now. Can't wait to see where I go in this!

2023.06.05 07:28 Noghbuddy Impromptu Test Run

I got a little bored and drunk. Then this happened. Just a bit of dumb action. I could try and spin this as me improving my ability to write more action oriented scenes, but well. Yeah, drunk and bored. Enjoy and tell me what you think.
CW: Sweet sweet excessive violence
----------
The little skiff drifted lazily along the asteroid belt. In a backwater system, free from prying eyes, the crew had ample time and space to test their newest toy. The ursdain in the pilot’s seat adjusted a couple controls before settling back in his chair. His avian co-pilot was observing the rest of the crew on the security feed.
“What is he doing?”
The ursdain leaned over, “Practicing?”
The avian’s half lidded stare was the only response.
In the cargo bay were the skiff’s other three occupants. A rather burly male human with brown skin and a mostly shaved head was yanking his tomahawk back out of the wooden board he had hung up on the wall. He walked back a few paces before turning and hurling it back at the target.
“Do you have to do that right now?” asked the exacerbated vulptan.
“Nope.” He responded while lining up his next throw.
“Just let him. If he doesn’t keep busy, he’ll keep trying to add ‘modifications.” The red-headed human female interjected while elbow deep in their prototype.
“You’re just jealous of my brilliance.”
“Sure. We’ll call it that.”
Meanwhile as the ursdain began to ponder his next meal a red blip flashed on his display followed by a sharp claxon. He slammed the red alert, “Thakt, we got company!”
The avian was already attempting to jam the enemy sensors, but they’d been made. “They’re on their way! Pirates looking to board!” She keyed the intercom, “Prepare for boarders!”
As soon as the lights went red the man in the jury-rigged shop ran to the new machine. “This thing ready?”
“The targeting computer hasn’t been installed and there’s still the issue of-“
“Can it move!?”
“Yes, but-“
“Strap me in!” He snached up the helmet and mask then climbed in the suit. The women began closing and sealing panels as he donned the helmet, flipped down the visor, and sealed the mask to his face.
“Gonzo! Listen to me. You don’t have a lot of time in that thing, so you gotta be in and out. Alright?”
“Lil, this is what I’m good at. Let me work.” She rolled her eyes as she closed the front up.
He opened then closed his mechanical fingers and rolled his shoulders. The suit seemed to be responding well. He stood to its full height and slammed the dome helmet down over his head. The other two already snatched a couple weapons and ran for the bridge to secure it. He stalked over to the armory bench to pick up some toys and party favors when the com cracked to life in his ear.
“Gonzo? You receiving?”
“Loud and clear.”
“Our only shot at getting out of here is you disabling their engines and breaking whatever they use to mate with us.”
He giggled slightly as he strapped the weapon harness over his mid-section. “Copy. Break shit. Can do.”
The ship shuddered and jolted. “They’re broadcasting for surrender.”
“Sure, I’ll accept their surrender.”
“Funny. They’re about to breach the stern airlock. Get ready.”
Gonzo drew a breath and put his game face on. Their MO is to breach loud and fast. A little shock and awe. He planted a couple surprises by the hatch then took cover around the bulkhead.
“They’re about to breach.” He popped a couple smoke grenades and tossed them down the corridor. Then an idea struck him, and he popped a couple more and thrust them in his harness for a bit of Blackbeard flair. He readied his weapon and checked the other two. All he could do was wait.
A few seconds later the hatch blasted in and two canids rushed into the haze. Gonzo didn’t know how armored they were, but he figured being covered in burning napalm was a bad thing. He leaned the nozzle around the corner and lit up the entrance. The blinding light pierced the smoke and judging from the screams, they weren’t ready for assaulting a weapons manufacturing ship. Now came the fun part of the suit. While the auto-aim and friend/foe feature weren’t installed, it did have a suite of sensors such as sonar, lidar, and infrared.
Gonzo could see the outlines of the thrashing pirates and held his fire. A couple more pirates entered the hall to drag their comrades out. That’s when he hit the clacker. The anti-personnel mines went off, filling the confined space with hundreds of ball-bearings in an instant.
“Hey! We gotta clean all that up when you’re done you know!”
“Relax. I’m advancing now. Give me a map.”
Sure enough, a holo layout of the pirate ship sprung to life in the corner of his vision, complete with the highlighted sections of engineering and security. He advanced through the smoke onto the pirate ship. As he emerged through the smoke, more billowing off him like a demon fresh from Hell, he saw more pirates readying to storm his little craft. They were lightly armored. Shame. With another squeeze and lazy turn, he coated the would-be intruders.
Realizing they bit off more than they could chew, the lights on the pirate vessel began flashing red, and a call to repel boarders went out. Gonzo hustled down the passages headed toward engineering. He rounded the corner and dove back behind the corner as the ursdain with a gatling laser opened up from the other end of the hall. He wasn’t sure the flamethrower would make it to the other side, so he swapped to his baby. He tossed his last smoke grenade around the corner and counted to ten.
When he felt the passage was good and obscured, he held his replica China Lake around the corner and fired. Fwoomp…BOOM! Something wet and red hit the wall beside Gonzo. I think I got ‘em. He pumped another round into the chamber and continued.
He found Engineering easily enough and stormed inside. It was a large room dominated by…Well, the engine he supposed. Gonzo wasn’t an engineer, but he was a 2300. He was about to jog up to the biggest most important looking bit when his legs were taken out from under him. He was quickly bound up in ssypno coils and could hear the suit groaning under the pressure.
“There’ll be no more of that. Now let’s get you out of that can.”
Gonzo struggled to no avail, but he’d be damned before he gave up. He took a breath and forced his arms out away from his body. The suit groaned and struggled to give him the breathing room he needed. When he thought he had the space to work with, his hand shot to his knife strapped to his belt. He drew it and twisted his hand just as the coils snapped shut around him. The pirate stabbed herself in the soft scales of her underbelly just as Gonzo drew his arm around his torso slicing long and deep.
She shrieked as he carved, and quickly tried to slither away, but he snatched a piece of her armor and rode her, continuing to stab and slash at the joints in her suit. She tried to curl in on herself and grab the man with her upper arms. He wrestled with her for a while before he drew his offhand behind her opposing arm then using her own death grip on his main hand bent her arm around his. Her elbow snapped and she shrieked. With brief freedom of movement, Gonzo drew his knife up and plunged it into her sub armored neck. Her tail thrashed and writhed before the life seeped from her.
Gasping and sweating profusely, he drew himself up and stumbled to the drive core. Or what he thought was the drive core. He wasn’t an astrophysicist, but he was sure this thing didn’t like heavy explosives. He quickly rigged up an IED around the biggest glowiest part and set it to go off on his clacker.
He jogged from engineering to security but was stopped in the passages by a couple canids ambushing him. One opened fire with a laser-rifle, striking him in the upper torso, but the armor kept his chest from being cauterized. The blast streaked off the chest piece leaving a red-hot mark. It burned.
“Keep out of fire, Gonzo! I was trying to tell you that the heat-sinks aren’t finished yet!”
There may not have been a new hole in him, but it burned like Hell. He closed the distance to his attackers, too close to use his rifle, and they met him with claw and teeth drawn. The first canid threw themselves at him, knocking him down, and clamping their jaws around where his neck would be. He heard a hiss as something gave way on his shoulder. He fought and rolled to buck them off, but they held fast.
Gonzo decided it was time to draw his sidearm and clamped his hand down on the head of the assaulting canid to keep them in place. The other one tried to claw at his legs, but only found solid titanium alloy. He reached down to his holster and drew the comically oversized revolver, now appropriately sized in the power-armor’s fist. He thrust the barrel under the canid’s chin and fired. Their friends’ helmet rocketing off their head gave Gonzo the brief shock needed to roll the first pirate off him, raise his pistol, and fire point blank at his second attacker. As their head snapped back, he hauled himself back onto his feet and limped into security.
He needed to find a way to release his ship but drew short at the two canids and taurian blocking the consoles. The two canids threw themselves at Gonzo, biting and clawing for all they were worth. The heat in the suit was becoming unbearable. It was starting to sear bits of exposed flesh. Gonzo regretted jumping in in a tank top.
One canid clamped their jaws on his neck while the other went for his legs trying to drop him to the deck. Something snapped to his left and he lost all control of his left arm. It was just a hundred pounds of dead weight. He fell back swinging his pistol around trying to pistol-whip his attackers.
“That’s enough! Just give up and we’ll sell you somewhere nice.” The taurian called out.
Gonzo bucked his hips and fired at the canid by his legs but missed. Repeating what he did before he point-blank lobotomized the canid by his shoulder. With a roll, he popped himself back up readying his next shot when the second canid fell on him. He held his ground as they slashed and leapt to bite.
He caught them in the air and slammed them into the bulkhead beside him. It was nice to be eye level with them for once. He used this to his advantage by slamming his titanium fist into their face and gut repeatedly, feeling each subtle bone crack and snap. The taurian grabbed him under the arms and hurled him to the other side of the room as the last canid slumped down the wall.
The pirate drew some kind of bladed weapon. Big mistake. Gonzo drew his tomahawk, and sprinted forward with his head down. Using all the power in the suit he had, he slammed into her stomach and drove her forward into the wall.
She recovered her breath quickly and began raining blows down on his back and shoulders. The strain was beginning to get to him. Sweat was streaming down his body, stinging his eyes. The suit burned. He bent his knees then shot upright, driving his helmet into her chin. She rocked back in shock and Gonzo took a couple steps back. His left arm was dead. He could only grasp with the fingers. The pirate rubbed her chin.
“Oh, you’ll pay for that.”
Gonzo quickly tossed his tomahawk up and grabbed it by the end, before hurling it at his enemy. It buried in her shoulder, and she screamed. He sprinted at her full tilt with his head down shoulder out and pinned her to the wall. She kept fighting and pushed him back. Gonzo used his hips to swing his dead arm around to the pirate and clamped down with his hand. His hand locked in place as the taurian began to try and ineffectually push him away. Panting, he decided to give her a bit of backward-knee syndrome. He hauled back and put his and his suits’ full weight into a stomp kick right on her knee.
It folded back and she shrieked. Now at chest height he began slamming his fist into her helmet until it warped and broke. He stopped when he saw the stream of blood pour out the bottom.
He tried to make his way to the console, but realized his hand was stuck gripping the dead-weight of the corpse. He planted one boot on its back and pulled for all he was worth. With a fresh souvenir of taurian hide trapped in his grasp, he quickly worked the security console and disengaged the clams holding his ship in place. Once freed, he pulled out his clacker and slammed it. The whole ship rocked and shuddered. Catching his que he limp-jogged back to his ship. The remaining pirates were too busy with damage control as the ship quickly began filling with vacuum. Gonzo found his airlock with minimal resistance and threw himself in it.
“Blast!” he cried as he clutched the safety bar inside the lock. Grokna punched the skiff for all it was worth headed for the nearest jump point.
When the airlock cycled Gonzo limped back into the scorched cargo hold with hydro leaking down his left side. Lil and Korsk sprinted in to check on the man as he clumsily clutched at the emergency releases. The dome helmet fired clean off the top while the chest piece fired out revealing the sweat drenched and burned pilot. The suit dropped to its knees as Gonzo flopped out ripping his mask and helmet off. He gulped at the fresh air and luxuriated in the coolness of the metal floor when he gasped, “I…I have…Some notes…Need…Better cooling…”

2023.06.05 07:26 Thalesian M1 GPU Performance

I am testing this on an M1 Ultra with 128 GPU of RAM and a 64 core GPU. This is based on the latest build of llama.cpp, which began GPU support for the M1 line today. I'm using the 65B Dettmer Guanco model. Performance is blazing fast, though it is a hurry up and wait pattern. Tokens are generated faster than I can read, but the GPU seems to need to pause every 20 seconds or so for long text generation. Probably need to increase batch sizes and make use of all that RAM.
llama_print_timings: load time = 12309.79 ms
llama_print\timings: sample time = 179.21 ms / 256 runs ( 0.70 ms per token)
llama_print_timings: prompt eval time = 1723.06 ms / 8 tokens ( 215.38 ms per token)
llama_print_timings: eval time = 33199.76 ms / 255 runs ( 130.20 ms per token)
The prompt:
(base) [email protected] llama.cpp % LLAMA_METAL=1 make -j && ./main -m ./models/guanaco-65B.ggmlv3.q4_0.bin -p "The first known dinosaur was" --ignore-eos -n 256 -ngl 1
And the response:
The first known dinosaur was discovered in 1824 and since then, the study of these fascinating creatures has been a source of wonder for many. These prehistoric reptiles came in all shapes and sizes, from the tiny Microraptor (about the size of a sparrow) to the enormous Argentinosaurus that was longer than 3 school buses!
What’s even more fascinating is that these different species were spread out across the globe. Some dinosaurs like the Triceratops and T-Rex roamed North America, while others such as the Muttaburrasaurus and Minmi were found in Australia. In this post, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most fascinating species that once roamed our planet.
One of the largest land animals to have ever lived, Argentinosaurus was truly an impressive sight. It weighed around 80 tons and measured up to 130 feet from nose to tail! Despite its massive size, this giant herbivore was probably slow-moving and gentle in nature. The Argentinosaurus belonged to a group of sauropod dinosaurs that included other huge species like the
The accuracy surprises me. I asked it about the evolution of monotremes, and it correctly cited Streptodon galami in the Cretaceous. Though like all LLMs it tends to wander a bit if the response is longer.

2023.06.05 07:17 battlestargirlactica Any fellow chronic pain folks have the EV6?

I’m finally upgrading my vehicle from a 2009 Ford Edge SEL and have been looking at the EV6 GT Line and the Sportage PHEV XLP.
My SO has a Telly SXP, which I love, but can’t drive it for long because no setting has been comfortable for durations, whether driving, or a passenger, mostly because of the “leather” and shape. (We take turns on our long haul road trips). It takes a long time for my back to get fatigued in the ol’ cloth seats in my Edge, but none of the models with the features wanted come with anything remotely similar feeling.
The Sportage PHEV XLP’s seats are slightly more comfortable than the Telly, and the vehicle is overall similar to my current size and setup, and still gets me the panoramic roof.
The EV6 GT Line I am considering has a sunroof, (albeit smaller, but a roof was one of my musts, no matter the vehicle I found), and has the suede seat package, which has more conforming support, while not as narrow.
I’m legitimately torn between the vehicles, as I like both, but it’s almost coming down to whether I’m ok with a $14k price difference for the seating alone.
Hoping to hear from other chronic pain folks, and if the GT Line, or its suede seats specifically, have been comfortable for long periods of driving, (i.e. anywhere from 1.5hrs straight or a total of 7-9hrs in a day).

Freyr + Mannaz release reaction - Vs Imperious + Andromeda
Integrated EnaiRim Vs Full-size EnaiRim
tl;dw the only races that seemed worse are Khajiit (slightly), Bosmer (already sucked) & Altmer (massive decline)
Orc & Redguard kinda held the line compared to their previous power tiers. Orc is way more flexible while Redguard really didn't care what it got since it's already so powerful
Argonian, Dunmer, Imperial, Nord (slightly) & Breton are all improved

What gear should I get? Hopefully getting my first EUC soon.
Getting a Master for on and off-roading. Love this gear choice so far. As far as chest protection what should I get?
I want pants and a chest protectojacket that is good for street and trail riding. Trying not to spend too much since this is already hitting $572 on top of the EUC. Should I just get some second hand one for ~$130. That’s what a lot of em go for

2023.06.05 07:07 girl_from_the_crypt Stuck on earth and looking for a job: There's more to the waitresses at my favorite diner than I thought

Something happened tonight. Something always seems to be happening these days, but this time, it was particularly confusing.
Some days don't even feel real anymore.
After my last post, I did as my savior human had advised me. I called Mary Markov and relayed to her what Jewel had told me. She promised to send agents to the warehouse right away, and late that same night, she reached out to me once again with news of an arrest having been made. Despite this small success, we both knew that this meant outright war. The Collective would know who had given them away, and the possibility of me joining their ranks peacefully would be off the table. The question remaining was when they would make good on their threat. Nettie Peterson's house is being guarded by covert Agency personnel, and mine and Eli's apartments are under watch, too. I'm glad Mary Markov is doing what she can to protect them, but I never doubted that complications would arise eventually.
Just not quite so soon.
The day started off fine. My best friend, still being relatively used to having agents around, doesn't seem to mind the aforementioned changes. The van inconspicuously parked outside her house didn't bother her in the least as she went about her morning routine. I helped her throw together something nourishing for breakfast, then watched her doing her makeup. She likes to keep her lips glossy and often applies lime green eyeshadow paired with a pear-colored line and, on special days, the occasional rhinestone. She looks like a garden fairy. When I told her that today, she treated me to a bright smile and a pat on the cheek.
She went off to look after her larvae, leaving me to roam her house alone. I spent some time inspecting the many drawings she keeps framed on the high wall in the living room. She always brings new ones home from work—gifts from the kindergarteners. They're not very artistically skilled, but they do produce interesting work. Nettie hangs them all up on the special wall, even the really bad ones. I watched TV for a couple hours, then read until Nettie came home.
It was getting dark out when she realized she needed tampons. She said she could get by on what she had until the morning, but no longer. I told her to stay put and that I'd run and get some for her, which is why I went on that fateful evening walk. I gave a quick nod to the agent leaning against the van outside as I started heading down the street, backpack slung over my shoulder. I made it to the convenience store five minutes before closing time, giving the annoyed cashier an apologetic look as she rang me up. Outside, the nightly blackness had settled over the rooftops, and I took in a deep breath, letting the fresh air flood my body.
All was well as I began to march back in the direction of Nettie's home. Until I heard a motorcycle revving.
…Jewel?
I instantly froze up. There was no one immediately in sight. I tried to soothe my fevered mind. There was no reason to be so on edge. A lot of town residents owned motorcycles, or at least I assumed they did. This reaction was a testament to my own waning sanity, no doubt. I shuddered, making an effort to shake the thought. There was a nervous tension in my step as I continued on my way. The engine noises faded off into the distance after a while, and I concluded that I was indeed becoming a bit paranoid.
Step by step, I carried myself towards my goal. Nettie Peterson's street wasn't anywhere in sight yet, but I would probably be at her door in around ten minutes tops. I had walked the distance between her house and the store often enough to estimate. I considered putting my earbuds in and listening to some music as a distraction, but I was afraid of what I might end up missing if I took away my sense of hearing. I began to chew on the inside of my cheek.
There was not a soul out except for me. This wasn't uncommon considering the size of our town, but given the circumstances, it still served to elevate my heart rate. I repeatedly tried and failed to calm myself. Eventually, I couldn't help it anymore. I took off running. And then it happened—someone stepped out from a sidestreet right ahead of me and we collided. Large hands flew to my shoulders, long fingers harshly digging into them. I didn't need to look up at the other person to recognize them. I sensed the same musky smell that had lingered around my room for hours after their last visit; warm, sweet and impossible to ignore. I could suddenly hear every single beat of my heart reverberating between my ears. Dread seemed to dribble down my bone-dry throat, pooling in my stomach like cold water.
I slowly lifted my head, knowing exactly who was about to stare back at me.
Jewel's eyes were incredibly wide. Their brows were trembling in manic, barely restrained fury, their lower lip quivered and, to my complete bewilderment, tears were freely rolling down their cheeks. They solidified the moment the skin contact was lost, turning into shimmering stones of green, blue and violet. I reached out and caught one before it could hit the ground. It was bright pink, and I found myself captivated by its beauty.
"So, can I… keep this?" I asked, tilting my head at the cultist.
Their chest was rising and falling heavily, and I shrank back a little when I took note of their nostrils flaring. "You are so dead," they uttered in a low, husky growl.
"I take it you got news of the Agency's involvement?"
Jewel once more closed the distance between us. They leaned down, their gemstone tears bouncing off my chest as they fell. "You spiteful little bitch. You'd rather try to ruin a good cause than forgive me and work together?"
"You can't be this delusional."
"Don't tell me what I can and cannot do!" they snapped, their voice rising to an eerily high pitch. They paused, looking briefly confused by what they'd said before the wrathful expression twisted their features again.
"What now? Are you seriously going to attack me out in the open like this?"
"Oh." Jewel drew themself up, squaring their muscled shoulders. "Oh, I'll manage."
Their outline before me started to blur, becoming fuzzy and indistinct. I blinked, then reached up to rub my eyes. They weren't becoming any clearer, though. Frowning, I took several steps back, squinting at the spot where the cultist had just been standing. The cultist was quickly turning into a faint, paling swirl of colors, losing shape before at last disappearing completely.
I was speechless, my pulse racing as beads of sweat ran down the side of my face. I couldn't believe it. Had all of this been some sort of hallucination? I raised a hand to my feverishly hot forehead. I was losing my mind. That had to be it. My gaze dropped to the gray asphalt and my breath caught in my throat when I spotted the colorful stones lying at my feet. Fuck.
A soft laugh rang out beside my ear, a draft of moist, warm air grazing my cheek.
I instinctively swung at the emptiness beside me, my clenched fist connecting with nothing. No.
"Come back here," I whined, flinching at the unmasked fear in my own voice. A sharp pain flared up in my ankle as my feet were swiped out from under me. I let out a squeak as I fell onto my open palms, managing to shield my head from the impact just in time. The rough ground scraped my hands and knees as I hurriedly pushed myself up, a few stray pebbles drawing blood. Despite my panic, my mind was clear enough to understand that I was in a precarious position. I couldn't just whip out my tentacles—not here where anyone could see me. It would for sure result in hysteria. People could start straight-up shooting at me. I'd end up looking like a monstrosity on a rampage, especially with Jewel having gone invisible. As it were, I only had one option, and that was to run.
I didn't waste another second. There was no way I was leading this murder cultist back to Nettie, but I had to find somewhere with other people, anywhere…
Aimlessly charging ahead, I tried to bring more distance between myself and the disembodied footsteps ringing out from behind me. Before long however, it was becoming hard to tell how far away they truly were. The sound seemed to flit from side to side, reaching my ears from constantly changing directions. The asshole was messing with my head.
Soon enough, my lungs were on fire. My sides were stinging; breathing became harder. I inwardly cursed my useless short legs. Still, I didn't slow down; I didn't dare to. I was growing increasingly desperate. Where was I supposed to go? I couldn't think of any places still open. And then, cutting through the darkness, a flickering neon sign offered the answer to all of my questions. Tom's Diner. With hope renewing my spirits, I picked up my pace once more. Rhonda was just in the process of moving the big menu sign inside for the night. I came to a skittering halt mere inches in front of her, helplessly grabbing onto her apron before she could close the door behind her.
She spun around to face me with knotted brows. "Evangeline?"
"Help me," I wheezed. "Let me in, quick!"
Rhonda, though still visibly perplexed, sprang into action, dragging me inside along with her. I slammed the door shut, throwing my entire weight against it. An unseen force clashed against it from outside, making the entire storefront shudder. The waitress nearly dropped her sign. "What in the—"
"They're after me," I choked out. "You can't see them, but they're right outside!"
"Oh." Her expression cleared up. "Say no more, say no more." She reached into her apron pocket, rummaging around while mumbling to herself. "I'm picking up what you're putting down…" She produced a bright red marker. "Allow me." Swiftly stepping up to me, she raised the felt tip to my forehead, proceeding to draw something onto my skin with smooth, efficient accuracy. An incoherent whisper slipped from her lips, words in a language I had never heard before. Finally, she pulled back. "Turn around, try if you can see them now. The door locks automatically, by the way."
I hesitantly shifted my weight back onto my feet, releasing the door and turning to look out into the night. I let out a gasp, staggering back when I found the contorted visage of the cultist pressed up against the glass. Jewel's eyes were still rimmed with shimmering tears, their mouth twisted in a grimace of murderous rage. They frowned in confusion when they realized that my gaze was once more trained on them. It didn't take long until they started pounding on the windowpane again.
"Hey! You stop that," Rhonda shouted, stabbing a finger in their direction. "I just cleaned that today! Oh hell… Hailey!" she called over her shoulder. "We have a problem; come help."
Another waitress came rushing out of the back room. Glancing between us and the pacing cultist outside had her huff out a sigh. "I see," she said icily. Determinedly striding towards the door, she lifted her voice, beginning to recite a verse or rhyme of some sort. It all sounded like gibberish to me. My head was spinning, my mind running wild, unable to keep track of what was happening around me. My skull suddenly felt prickly from the inside, my whole body seemingly turning weightless. My vision fell away as my eyes rolled back and my knees gave out from beneath me. I had lost consciousness before I hit the floor.
I don't believe I was out for very long, despite my exhausted body embracing the cold slumber. A voice tugged on the edge of my hearing, gently guiding me towards wakefulness. I had been moved onto a slightly softer, more comfortable surface. I arduously craned my neck up to overlook my surroundings. I was lying on one of the padded benches next to the stationary tables. Crouching beneath it in order to sit close to me was a very familiar figure.
"Hey, Sunshine." Frankie Preston straightened up as far as he could without hitting his head. "Sorry I wasn't there to catch you when you fainted. Too bad. It could have been our movie-moment."
I smiled at him. Then I jolted upright, nearly kicking Frankie under the table as I planted my feet on the floor to train my eyes on Rhonda. She was leaning against the partition wall of the booth, typing away on her phone. "You," I uttered. "You and that other lady did some kind of… witchcraft-thing."
She glanced up briefly. "Oh. That was nothing, really. Forget about it."
Fran poked his head out from between my legs. "What's this about witchcraft?"
Rhonda shrugged. "Hailey and I just performed some basic spells to get rid of your little wife's stalker."
"Could you please not—nevermind that; what are you even talking about?" Fran's voice was dripping with bewilderment.
The older woman raised a brow at him. "Honey, we're… we're witches. You did know that, right?"
Silence.
"Right?" Rhonda repeated, once again not receiving a response.
"I don't think he did," I supplied helpfully.
"You're kidding me." Rhonda stared at the blonde with her mouth agape. "How could you not have known? You lived with us for almost two years!"
He still gave no answer.
"Honey, you saw everything! You saw my herbs…" Her voice faltered in disbelief. "And the ceremonial daggers… The charms around the doors!"
He shrugged.
"You played with Mae-Lynn's casting crystals for a whole afternoon? You were in the room when Paloma made her sacrifice for Loki's favor? You literally watched all six of us at our bonfire dance during the blood moon!"
"I thought that was just another crunchy mom thing."
"Crunchy mom thing?" she echoed, her chest rising at the affront. Jabbing a finger at my forehead, she added, "And how would you have accounted for that?"
"That little drawing? I thought Eva had gotten herself tattooed." Frankie glanced between Rhonda and me in confusion.
"It's a magic symbol, for crying out loud; it's a protection against forces messing with her perception!" the waitress explained in audible exasperation. "And who would get their forehead inked?"
"Eva might. You gotta admit she has peculiar fashion tastes," Frankie argued.
I couldn't help but chime in. "Why do people keep saying that?"
Rhonda threw her hands up in defeat.
I cleared my throat. "You're saying that all the ladies working here have supernatural abilities?"
"Like I just told you." She rubbed her temples with both hands. "And I'm sorry you fainted. It had to do with Hailey—her magic is great for defending against dark influences. The spell she cast was to scare off your attacker, but it seems to have affected you, too."
"I don't consider myself a dark influence."
"Well, you are an interdimensional being," Rhonda replied. "Not normally mankind's best friend. But I know you're a good kid. Don't worry."
"Thank you very much for helping me," I said softly, staring at my hands as I folded them in my lap. "I apologize for the inconvenience."
"It's cool."
"So, the six of you all together are probably really powerful?" I inquired, an idea faintly taking shape in my mind.
"You could say that," Rhonda answered, not without a hint of pride.
"Is there any way I could get your input on a problem I've been having?"
"I suppose," she said slowly. "We'll hear you out, sure, but that's about all the promises I'll make for now, okay?"
"Yes, perfect."
"Alright. I'll talk to the girls and we'll be in touch." She zipped up her jacket, shoving her phone into her pocket. "Goodnight, you two."
With that, she left us sitting in the empty diner. Frankie still looked rather puzzled. Shaking his head, he turned to give me a droll smile. "How embarrassing. I normally pride myself on being perceptive. People are strange though, aren't they?" He sat down beside me on the bench, shuffling closer. "You ran into trouble again? With the cultist?"
I didn't really want to relay the entirety of what I'd learned from Jewel to him—somehow, I didn't think Frankie would be opposed to someone bringing by the end of the world. It would be best to keep that particular piece of information stored away for a while longer. Instead, I asked a completely different, if not wholly unrelated question. "The other day, you told me about feeling destructive and grimy. Where is that coming from?"
"Sunshine, I know I've danced around this for long enough. I can tell you, but you look miserable right now. I'd much rather have you in better spirits first." He placed a tentative hand on my back. "Anything I can do to cheer you up?"
I started chewing on my lower lip, not meeting his gaze.
"You're thinking about kissing me again, aren't you?" Frankie asked, having apparently learned how to read minds.
"We don't have to. I do not care."
"That nearly crossed the line between accommodating and insulting. Look, I want to. You just caught me off guard the last time." He pulled a wet string from his chewing gum. I waited in silence for him to continue. "I'm honestly surprised you're still up to it. I know I'm a piece of shit."
"You're not—"
"I am. And what's more, you should know that kissing is as far as things are gonna get between us. I don't do the sex-thing. That's nothing to do with how much I like you or anything. I just don't do that." He had removed his gum from his mouth completely, instead fumbling around with it like play doh. "If that cancels out the whole liking-me-extravaganza, then it's best we cleared that up beforehand." He turned to face me. "What's that look for?"
I was beaming at him with more conviction that I had found the most perfect being than ever. "This works out beautifully," I told him.
"Are you sure? You're not just saying this?"
"If you don't take my word for it, I wouldn't know how else to prove it."
"I believe you! I'm glad, I really am, I'm just kinda stunned." He straightened up. "I want to kiss you even more now."
A quiet squeak came from somewhere in my throat. "I can hear my pulse," I remarked.
"Yeah, me too." He grinned, propping his chin in his palm. "Excited?"
"You know that." Feeling I had to share more, I added, "This is the first time for me. That doesn't change anything, does it?"
Fran's brows rose a great deal. "Huh."
"Is that bad?"
"No! But seriously, is this gonna be your first kiss?" He gestured at our surroundings. "A dingy little diner after hours? Not very romantic, is it?"
"That's fine," I assured him.
"Nope. We can do better." He got off the bench, drawing himself up to his full height (which wasn't very impressive either). "It doesn't have to be a big deal, but it should be nice. You're getting a good first kiss. I'll think of something. Don't worry, I won't go over the top."
I couldn't help but smile at that. Letting him pull me to my feet, I briefly went in for a hug. I nearly jumped when he turned his head and pressed his lips to my cheek. "That doesn't count." He held onto my hand as he let go. "So… how would you feel about hypothetically burning a building together?"

2023.06.05 07:00 Mattrapbeats How to increase the probability of customers seeing your emails

This post is all about deliverability. There are a lot of factors that go into getting your emails in the main inbox, it's actually pretty wild how advanced the inbox algorithms have gotten. This topic requires a lot of strategy so I thought it would be best to break it into 2 posts. So this is part 1 and it's going to be about how to keep your emails out of spam.
With that being said, let's get started.
Here are 10 things you should avoid doing regularly if you want to have good deliverability:
  1. Keeping unengaged members on your email list. If your business isn't seasonal and someone hasn't opened your emails in over 6 months you should consider either reducing the volume of emails that are sent to them or completely removing them from your email list. They will bring your open rates down and this will increase your chances of being marketed as spam.
  2. Try not to send an email to over 50k people at the same exact time. At minimum break your list into buyers and non-buyers. You can send the same email, just slightly tweak the sales copywriting so it's appropriate for the person on the receiving end. This will greatly improve your average open rate and remember, good open rates = healthy domain.
  3. Beware of spam filters - Did you know that you could get blacklisted? If your domain is unhealthy your emails will almost always go directly to spam. It's almost impossible to revive a domain so be careful how you go about sending from your main domain. Also if you burnt a domain in the past from 1 IP address it's likely that if you create a new domain using that same IP address your 2nd domain also will be negatively affected. If you use a shifty email sending provider you will also run into spam filter problems.
  4. Don't lead with a misleading subject line. Pissing people off is the easiest way to get spam complaints instead of normal unsubscribes. (Spam complaints are way worse for deliverability) The 2 best types of subject lines are subjects that are extremely direct and tell people exactly what they are getting, and subject lines that create some level of curiosity. There's no need to have misleading subject lines.
  5. Don't be inconsistent. Algorithms love consistency. This is why the number 1 way to boost engagement on almost any social platform ever created is to post consistently and follow some sort of routine. Emails aren't different at all. Try to email your most engaged segment every week. This will give you a good average open rate and also it will show the email service provider that people interact with your content regularly.
  6. Don't try to hide the unsubscribe button. Not having an unsubscribe button is illegal but some people just try to use cheat codes like making the unsubscribe text white on a white background. This is the easiest way to increase spam complaints greatly. Customers should never feel like you're forcing them to do anything.
  7. Don't send emails from shady domains. You should have a clear professional-looking sender address. Use a business domain, not a regular email account. Avoid using any random characters anywhere in the domain and do everything you can to make it very clear where the email is coming from.
  8. Make sure your grammar is on point. Typos of any kind can be a red flag for spam filters. It's impossible to be perfect all the time but at least try to make sure your emails have less typos than this Reddit post.
  9. Never buy emails list and use them for B2C marketing. Sending to people without their consent is the worst thing that you could possibly do if you're trying to avoid the spam filter. Make sure every single email address that is receiving your emails has opted in.
  10. Don't use spammy copywriting. Most people have literally no idea what this means so I put together a list of things that are generally bad. Here is the list of things to avoid: Using all caps for subject lines, capitalizing every word in your subject lines all the time, using large fonts, using fonts smaller than size 8 font in main bodies of sales copy, overusing words like FREE or SALE in your subject lines and over using emojis.
I want to end this with a reminder that no one is above spam filters. If you go to your spam folder right now you'll probably see at least one 8 figure company stuck in there multiple times. These people hire "experts" and pay them thousands every month and still can't figure it out. So just because your emails are doing okay now, just know that can change fast if you are not careful.

2023.06.05 06:49 Alastair-Wright [Freedomless Fighters] - Chapter 1 - post-apocalyptic, adventure, sci-fi.

I am a newbie writer, I'd love to hear some criticism (I can imagine there's a lot) so please tell me what you think I did right and wrong.
-------------------------------------------
I pull my head away from the sink a second or so after I splash the cold water into my face, I blink a number of times as I reach down and turn the tap’s handle. I then grab a small towel and rub my face with it.
Hmm, that never wakes me up as much as I'd like to, I’m more awake than I was, which is a victory I suppose.
I turn and walk past the barely functional shower and the clean toilet, which isn’t too impressive till you see the rest of the outpost.
I open the door and walk out into the main room. The room’s somewhat divided into two, the front door is right in the middle of the wall, and to its right is the kitchen. Well, the kitchen might be giving too much credit, a few counters with a fridge, sink, and microwave. We did have a coffee maker till Baron got drunk and broke it, which left us with no more coffee and no more drinks as Cleo had us pour the rest of the alcohol so it wouldn’t happen again with something more important.
To the left of the door is a living room, an old orange sofa, which looks like it’s seen more combat than us, honestly I have no clue where Baron and Jakob found this bloody thing. We also have a lounge chair, also orange and also in the same state that the sofa is in. We have a small wooden coffee table between the sofa and our TV. It’s a small screen and it’s black and white but it works, mostly works, the machine is fine but, well, it’s held up by these four legs and I’ll just say it, those skinny chicken legs are not aging well, we’ve already nailed boards and pipes onto these legs as braces.
We have a bit of a bet going on about how long it’ll last, I’m giving the legs three months, and Baron’s doing the repairs and is giving about six months, Cleo better hopes it breaks within the week or she’s lost her money, and Jakob didn’t place a bet.
I turn around and close the bathroom door, as I do I get a view on this side of the room, three doors stand.
On the far left is the second biggest room in the outpost, only beaten by the main/common room, Baron and Jakob have that room, it’s about twice the size of the bathroom, and Jakob and Baron were just barely able to fit a double sized bed in there, although they lost the room for a desk or anything more a pair of small bedside cabinets.
In the middle of the three is the bathroom, again, pretty small, damaged shower, clean toilet.
On the far right is Cleo’s room, about the same size as the bathroom. She was able to get a desk and signal bed.
And of course, there’s the radio desk, packed just into the far right corner, just past Cleo’s door is the radio desk, it has a ton of radio equipment on it so we can get orders from HQ.
I turn around, walk a bit further over to the living area and sit down on the lounge chair, Baron is laying down on the sofa with his head turned to face the TV, and Cleo is preparing an MRE for herself, I don’t know how she can stomach those things.
Baron is a mountain of muscle, while incredibly strong he’s not the brightest bulb, still a lovely guy to be around. He’s currently wearing some old jeans and a turtleneck.
Cleo’s very strict and pretty reserved, she’s not shy, she just doesn’t talk unless she has something to say. Currently, she’s wearing some baggy green camo trousers and a brown tank top.
“How ya doing Milo?” Baron turns his head and asks.
“Hmm, fine I guess, you?” I reply and ask back,
“Fighting fit” He answers with a smile as he looks back at the TV. I look over to the TV to see what he’s watching, it’s some kind of mechanical show.
“Feeling homesick?” I sarcastically ask.
“As if” he laughed, “Hey, If I go back into mechanics then I want you to shoot me” he adds.
We both laugh at the joke. After we calm ourselves a bit he says “Anyway, I’m only watching it because it’s between this or that bloody ‘live at the capital’ with that, umm, what's-her-faces?”
“Sue Stone?” I answer.
“Aye that’s her” He snaps his fingers
“yeah, I see your point, both her and that entire show are horrible”
“The part that gets on my nerves is that it’s always on, we never get the signal for anything good here” he continues to rant and I can’t help but chuckle, it’s always a bit funny watching him get annoyed.
“Like that ‘Lies on the coast’ show, I mean that show got another season for god sake”
“Wait really?” He asks, turning a bit and starting to sit up.
“Yeah, it’s ridiculous” I answer.
He sighs and facepalms, “I wish you hadn’t told me that”
“Hmm?”
He sighs again and leans back into the sofa “That’s gone and ruined my mood”
I laugh as I stand up “Heh, sorry man, anyway, I’m off, any idea where Jakob is?”
“ umm, I think he’s on the porch ‘though he might have gone off for a walk or something” He answers.
I nod and walk off towards the cabin door and open the old door. I see Jakob as I open the door, he’s in his late twenties and has long black hair, and is wearing combat boots, black jeans, and a gray shirt, he normally has a knee-long leather jacket on but he isn’t wearing it currently. He’s sitting on a chair with his legs on the small metal table here on the porch, he’s reading a book.
“How are you?” I ask as I walk over, he looks up from the booms quickly.
“O-oh, I-I didn’t see you t-there” He speaks as he sits up more and takes his legs off the table, “and I’m good, you?”
He has a bit of a stutter, something he said he was born with, he’s tried to get rid of it, apparently to no avail.
“I’m fine” I answer as I sit down across from him. “What’ you reading there?” I ask as I reach over and grab one of the bottles of water on the table.
“Oh, it’s a S-strange man in a st-strange land” He answers, “It’s about a-a man who from Mars who c-comes to e-earth"
“Hmm, sounds interesting” I add as I uncap the bottle.
“It is! Err, w-would you like to borrow it af-after I’m done with it?”
“Sure!” I answer before taking a mouthful of the water, “Just tell me when you’ve finished it” I add.
“will do!”
And with that, I turn my head off and look out into the forest ahead of the cabin. I then look back over at Jakob. You know it's a shame, it’s always nice to speak with him yet he almost never speaks.
Let me correct that, he’s always happy to speak and always has something interesting to say, yet he almost never starts the conversation. I’ve had to guess it would stem from his past.
His past. His past is a bit of a mystery to me. I know he was once a slave to the Dominion, I know he and Baron escaped the Dominion together and I know they later joined the Freedom Fighters, I also think, but am in no way sure, that he’s a tribal.
Two main reasons, funnily, both of which also make up his role in the team.
For one, he’s a helluva sniper, he once killed a person from two thousand meters away. He also handles the hunting for our squad, getting fresh meat is fantastic when all you’ve only been eating MREs for months.
Second of all, he’s a skilled tracker, if he’s on someone’s trail then he’ll find them. There was this guy who used to be with the Freedom Fighter, but he turned traitor and used a bomb to kill a whole unit, and then Jakob was sent after him.
Jakob tracked him across the entire wasteland, he followed him north, all the way up to the ruins of those old-world cities of Calaye and that City of Lights
I had always thought places like these either weren’t real or were greatly exaggerated, but according to Jakob, they're real.
“Hey,” Jakob says, I look away from the forest and over to Jakob, “I w-was going to go on a-a hunt, wanna join?” He asks as he stands up.
I take a second to think before replying “Sure, that sounds fun” I answer as I get up
“Yeah, I h-have a pair of rifles in the c-car” He speaks as we start to walk off the porch, but then we hear a yell.
“Everyone! Here now” we both hear Cleo yell from inside. We both turn on the spot and charge into the cabin, pushing past the door.
We see Cleo sitting by the radio, Baron standing by her. “Incoming broadcast, directly from the Colonel! Get over here”
Jakob and I rush over, albeit with a lot less worry and a lot more interest.
Colonel Barnaby is the leader of the Freedom Fighters, not our founder, that was General Margaret. Officially she is still our leader, yet she went missing over three years ago, Colonel Barnaby has refused to take her position officially until he sees proof of her death.
We stand behind Cleo as she flips a few switches and turns a couple of dials, trying to get the best connection.
After a few moments we can hear a voice. “-Re you there, Sergeant Laidlaw?” His voice can be heard cutting through the static.
“Yes Colonel Barnaby, what seems to be the problem?” Cleo answers and asks.
“09-10?” He asks. A password.
Cleo turns her head towards a small open book on the desk, the book’s filled with a series of dates and names. What the Colonel asked was a date, with the day being brought down by one, and the month being brought up by one.
“01-31-09-26” She answers. Her answer is the date of birth of everyone in the squad, in days. All the dates are off by a few days, the amount depends on the current date, the amount to change by is listed in that book.
“Good, now Sergeant Laidlaw I have an important task for you and your squad” Jakob and Baron exchange a few glances at this news, “Are you familiar with the town of Pinkton?”
And there goes my excitement for this operation.
“A member of my squad is” She answers.
“Then I’ll let them fill you in on what the town is like, The more dead air the better” He mumbles the last bit, “Now listen, upon wolf street there is a warehouse, at 02:10 a shipment will be brought into it, I need you to go there and steal a crate with a serial code of ‘01-12-20-06’. Did you get that?”
“Warehouse on Wolf Street, get a crate, serial code ‘01-12-20-06’, got it” She answers as she grabs a pencil and starts jotting it down.
“Good, after receiving this crate I need you to bring it back to your base, a team will be ‘round to pick up at some point, understood?”
“Yes sir”
“On the other side,” He says as the line goes dead, leaving our squad alone again. A few moments of silence follow before Cleo turns in her chair and stands up.
“Baron, Jakob, go get your gear” She speaks, Jakob and Baron nod before quickly turning and rushing to their rooms.
She then turns to me and asks “You’re from Pinkton right? Tell me about it”
I sigh, “It’s the crown prince of rust belt towns, it peaked twenty years ago and has been on a cliff face of a decline since”.
“Without the sarcasm?” She follows.
I sigh again, “It's a small town, it used to be incredibly important as it has a port, and it has a railway going through it since the old world made it very important for getting resources from the islands to the mainland.”
“I assume that was the peak?”
“You’d be right” I continue “Pinkton is down a river, which limits the size of ships that can go there, when new rails were built to towns on the coast Pinkton fell out of favour. It won’t have much security and most people there are in their eighties so we won’t have to worry too much about noise as they’ll likely be deaf.”
“I see, well thanks, I’ll go get my gear, you go get yours” She states and turns off, going to her room to get ready.
I turn around and walk over to the couch, I kneel down and grab a suitcase from under it, my gear is stored in there. I pull it out and walk off to the bathroom to get ready.

2023.06.05 06:45 ashblank15 I feel so annoying

I feel like I’m at a point in my life where I’m seriously annoying just about everyone in my life by just being myself and existing, particularly my husband. It’s definitely feeling like a case of ‘he’s just not that into you’ and I really don’t think I’m overreacting.
I am constantly wondering what he’s up to, how his day is going, what the kids are doing, etc. because duh, I love him and them and care? We work opposite shifts, he works days and I work nights so I check in and like to talk about stuff when it gets a little later (I work with kids who are in bed at 9pm, so I have the rest of the night to just sit around other than menial chores and paperwork) He is awake usually until 11p or midnight depending on the day. He will respond to maybe 1 out of 3-4 of my messages and not address anything I said but one thing out of all of it. It drives me NUTS. He’s been playing Zelda all day long, whatever it’s Sunday and we had a big day out yesterday so I really don’t care except he literally sends me like one word answers 85% of the time when I’m trying to have a conversation.
It’s important to note that I have rejection sensitive dysphoria, and when he seems distance (which is hella fucking often tbh) I immediately jump to ‘something is wrong’. He also has a habit of shutting down when he’s in a mood about something so I never actually know whether it’s something I did or he’s just busy which just throws fuel on the fire. But Bromo’s, I am fucking TIRED of feeling like an annoying bitch. I want to talk to my husband about things. I thought he was my best friend, and I want to talk to my best friend about stuff. But he makes me feel so fucking annoying I am at the point that I just don’t want to talk at all anymore lest I get ignored and feel even worse. I really don’t know the point in this post other than to shout it into the ether instead of letting it boil me alive from the inside.
Edit to add: Here’s a great example of what I’m talking about. I texted him earlier, a couple texts about how I am needing new clothes for a job I’m about to take. Just ranting a bit about Amazon Essentials clothing line being shitty about sizing and how I should probably look elsewhere for new stuff next time. He doesn’t respond for over an hour so I text ‘you awake?’ And he responds ‘barely’ and doesn’t acknowledge anything I talked about. It is truly infuriating to me. At least PRETEND you care about what I have to say?? Please tell me if I’m way off base here bc I feel so fucking annoying and I don’t think it’s annoying to want to have a conversation about random things in my life if the person is supposed to care about me.

Several FORMS AND FUNCTION

Epithelial tissue exists in many structural forms. In general, it either covers or lines one issue and usually consists of renewable sheets of cells that have surface specializations made-to-order for his or her specific roles. Usually, a basement membrane separates tissue tissues from underlying, adjacent tissues. tissue tissues absorb (e.g., the liner of the little intestine), transport (e.g., internal organ tubules), excrete (e.g., sweat glands), protect (e.g., the skin), and contain nerve cells for sensory reception (e.g., the fashion buds inside the tongue).

Function depends upon structure;

The size, shape, and arrangement of tissue cells ar directly related to these specific functions.

How Long Does Bleeding Last with Fibroids?
Fibroids, also known as uterine leiomyomas, are noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus. While they are generally harmless, fibroids can cause a range of symptoms, including heavy menstrual bleeding. Understanding the duration of bleeding associated with fibroids is crucial for individuals affected by this condition.
https://preview.redd.it/v7i5hqz2n44b1.jpg?width=2000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=870530e8eda413ad8ad5e90ee8a59a8b94e7bcf7
In this article, we will delve into the factors influencing the length of bleeding, the typical duration of bleeding with fibroids, and the available treatment options to manage this symptom effectively.

Factors Influencing Bleeding Duration

Several factors contribute to the duration of bleeding experienced by individuals with fibroids. These factors include the size, number, and location of fibroids within the uterus. Larger fibroids, multiple fibroids, and those positioned near the uterine lining are more likely to cause heavier and prolonged menstrual bleeding.
Additionally, hormonal imbalances can impact the bleeding duration. Estrogen dominance, a condition characterized by high levels of estrogen relative to progesterone, can stimulate fibroid growth and result in excessive bleeding. Other hormonal factors, such as thyroid disorders, can also influence bleeding patterns.

Duration of Bleeding with Fibroids

The duration of bleeding with fibroids can vary significantly among individuals. Typically, women with fibroids experience longer and heavier periods compared to those without fibroids. While a typical menstrual cycle lasts between 21 and 35 days, women with fibroids may experience periods lasting longer than a week.
In some cases, fibroids can cause prolonged bleeding outside the regular menstrual cycle, leading to irregular bleeding patterns. This can result in frequent spotting or bleeding between periods, making it difficult to predict when the bleeding will occur.
Moreover, the duration of bleeding can change over time. Some women may find that their bleeding becomes progressively heavier and lasts longer as the fibroids grow. Others may experience intermittent bleeding or fluctuations in their bleeding patterns.

Management and Treatment Options

If you are experiencing prolonged or heavy bleeding due to fibroids, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional to discuss management options. The treatment approach will depend on various factors, including the severity of symptoms, the desire for future fertility, and the individual's overall health.
  1. Medications: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, can help manage pain and reduce bleeding. Hormonal medications like oral contraceptives, progestins, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRH agonists) can also be prescribed to regulate the menstrual cycle and decrease bleeding.
  2. Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE): UFE is a minimally invasive procedure that blocks the blood supply to the fibroids, causing them to shrink and reduce bleeding. It is performed by an interventional radiologist and offers a less invasive alternative to surgical interventions.
  3. Myomectomy: Myomectomy involves the surgical removal of fibroids while preserving the uterus. It can be performed through various approaches, including hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, or open surgery. Myomectomy is an option for women who wish to preserve their fertility.
  4. Hysterectomy: In cases where fibroids are severe or recurrent, and other treatments have not provided relief, a hysterectomy may be considered. This surgical procedure involves the removal of the uterus and is a definitive treatment for fibroids.
  5. Endometrial Ablation: This procedure is used to remove or destroy the lining of the uterus, reducing menstrual bleeding. Endometrial ablation is a suitable option for women who have completed childbearing and do not wish to undergo a hysterectomy.

Now Listen Very Carefully Here:

Conclusion

The duration of bleeding with fibroids can vary among individuals, but it is generally longer and heavier compared to women without fibroids. Factors such as the size, number, and location of fibroids, as well as hormonal imbalances, can influence the duration of bleeding. It is important for individuals experiencing prolonged or heavy bleeding to consult a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and management.
Treatment options range from medication to minimally invasive procedures like uterine fibroid embolization or surgical interventions like myomectomy or hysterectomy. Understanding the available treatment options can help individuals with fibroids make informed decisions about managing their symptoms and improving their quality of life.

2023.06.05 06:29 YAOMTC Some rail station platforms are in the middle of freeways. Have any been built with sound barriers?

Here in Chicago, the Blue Line for much of its length follows a freeway. However, the freeway adjacent stations I've seen have their platforms completely exposed to the noise of the freeway.
Freeways often have concrete barriers on either side to reduce the noise to the surrounding area, but never in the middle. These sound barriers could potentially be built between the tracks and the road as well, but with the platforms being right in the middle, you'd basically need the platform to be in a tunnel.
I could only find one article on the topic of noise and freeway-adjacent rail stations: "Too Loud to Hear the Train! Noise Assessment, Implications, and Mitigation Strategies on Light Rail Platforms" from the Journal of Planning Education and Research. (I don't have access to it, but I was able to find it on another site. It might be against reddit's rules to link.) It made some mention of barriers:
In a study conducted shortly after the Green Line was built, Wolf (1996) investigated noise at its stations, located in the median of the I-105 freeway. He also estimated the noise reduction capability of on-platform shelters, sound absorptive materials on the canopies and other overhead structures on the platforms, and sound barriers between the highway and the platform.
...
An earlier study of noise mitigation at the 37th Street Station, located in the middle of the Harbor Transitway, found that the installation of sound walls on the platform could reduce the amount of noise by as much as 13 dB (ATS 2009). Clear materials such as Plexiglas can be used to build sound walls that do not have the effect of enclosing the station with dark material. One disadvantage of sound walls is their high cost, around $200,000 per station
...
Another design intervention would be to provide enclosed waiting areas for passengers on platforms. The cost of this option would depend on the materials and size of the enclosed area, but a calculation of these costs is beyond the scope of this study. None of the stations in this study included such waiting areas, and thus we have not been able to measure firsthand the extent to which they mitigate freeway noise.
Plenty of ideas, but no examples of existing rail stations, at least in this 2014 article.
Is this a matter of "this is a North American issue, no one else builds rail stations along freeways"? The rail line was built there for cost saving purposes in the automotive era, so do they all lack noise barriers due to cost as well?
