2023.05.29 23:19 ferocious_puppy Eulogy to my Father
My father passed away last month at the age of 60. Although he had a number of illnesses, with one being from a young age, his death was unexpected. This is incredibly hard to come to terms with as I expect anyone on this subreddit would appreciate. Reading posts of some people on here who have lost loved ones at a young age or in terrible circumstances puts my loss in perspective but its still no less raw or devastating. I read a eulogy at my fathers funeral which I'm going to add below. It's long and most people won't read it but I just want to tell as many people as possible how amazing my father was. I have omitted any names from the eulogy and replaced with NAME. I will say though my dads name was Mark and I hope anyone who reads this sees how incredible he was.
Thank you all for coming.
My Dad was the person I looked up to the most, especially the older I got where I grew to appreciate the incredible man he was and how he lived his life. He had things very hard from a young age with multiple conditions, but he never let that define him. He appreciated the good things in his life, and not once did I ever hear him dwell on the bad that happened to him, his attitude was always to enjoy what he could surrounded by the people he loved for as long as he could no matter what was thrown his way. My dad possessed many qualities which include being kind, thoughtful, funny, loving and he is the strongest person mentally I’ve ever met and I’m proud and fortunate that he was my dad. The challenge to show those qualities became harder especially in the last few years but he never stopped living and being the man he always was, laughing, joking, and enjoying himself around his family.
His sense of humour was witty and dark, and he loved to wind people up, especially my mum. Even in his final hours he had his sense of humour. He was lying in bed that morning and he had a remote to move the bed into different positions. My mum heard him call her, so she went in and the remote was on the floor. My dad said sorry NAME can you pick it up, so she did. 10 minutes later she heard my dad call her again, so she went back in, the remote was on the floor again this time my dad had a grin on his face, my mum picked it up and gave it to him and warned him not to drop it again. He did of course drop it again and my mum saw a big smile on his face like he always had as she came back in. She knew he was winding her up and was smiling as well and I’m sure my dad thought about doing it again, but he knew one more time and it would be wrapped around his neck.
Two of my oldest memories I have of my dad are of stories he liked to tell because he found them funny to talk about over the years and I know he would like me to mention them. I don’t know whether it’s a coincidence they both involve alcohol, but he was a SURNAME so of course he enjoyed a drink.
The first is when I was around 5 and my dad and I were watching tv and he was enjoying a glass of whiskey. He went out to go to the bathroom and I seized my opportunity, grabbed the whiskey, and had a swig. My Dad came back into the room with me screaming it burns it burns pointing at the glass. My dad knew what needed to be done and rushed into action grabbing a can of lager and having me drink some to get rid of the whiskey taste. It did work to be fair and when I was older, I hated whiskey and enjoyed lager, which explains a lot.
The second story I want to share is another from when I was young. My dad would always go out drinking with his brothers NAME and NAME on boxing day. It was usually a nice casual drink and a chance for them to spend time together. However, on this occasion my dad got very drunk. So drunk his brothers had to carry him home which was an incredible feat by itself as he was not a small man. What was even more impressive is they managed to get him home but avoid my mum. They achieved this by leaving him sitting by the bins outside and knocking the door and running off. I don’t blame them, and I think it was a very smart move. However, what they didn’t expect was my dad to get up and manage to fall inside the bin. That was the sight that greeted my mum.
My dad was a great father to me and my sister NAME. He was limited physically in some of the things he could do with us but he more than made up for it in other ways and he was always there for us when we needed him. The only thing my father got wrong when NAME and I were growing up in my opinion is he should have been a bit harsher on NAME. She was always terrorizing me, and I was always calm and never did anything to instigate things, but she couldn’t be stopped. I think my father showed a bit of favouritism there.
At Christmas and other occasions, he enjoyed having everyone around and eating, drinking, playing games and having fun. Trivial pursuit was something he always wanted to play, probably because he would often win. He would always play as the blue counter, his favourite colour and if my nan was there which she usually was she would go on his team as she knew he would get everything right and she could sit back and sip her dissarano. I’m sorry nan but I really don’t think your going to win many games in future.
A memory of Christmas that sticks out is when we were playing a golf game on the Nintendo wii and it was my dads go. He was very competitive and put a lot of effort into his swing as he had to make up for the fact, he was playing sitting down. On this occasion he tried a bit too hard and also forgot to tighten the strap causing the wii remote to go flying off his wrist and straight into the tv destroying the screen. I will never forget the look on his face, a combination of shock and disbelief.
My dad also enjoyed playing real golf, many times with me and his son in law NAME but always with his mum. He caught the golf bug later in life but would play almost every week, sometimes twice a week for the part of the year they could use a buggy on the course. His father also used to go with them to drive the buggy and the sight of it all on the course was terrifying for others playing. A typical sight would be his father with his sunglasses on no matter the weather, driving the buggy with my dad in front and my nan sitting at the back trying to hold on as his father drove way to fast hitting every bump he could find and just about staying upright. He would then drop them off next to their drive which had gone maybe 50 yards at most, which considering their limitations wasn’t bad. They would play their shots with his father laughing hysterically and taunting them from the buggy as their balls went another 50 yards. To just be on the golf course playing with the pain my father was in and the limitations he had was an inspiration to me. He didn’t care what anyone else thought as he was doing what he enjoyed.
There are many more memories I could talk about and many more things he enjoyed doing but we’ll be here hours if I go into everything, and nobody wants that including me. NAME will go into more of my dad’s hobbies and life later, but I hope what the memories I’ve talked about show is how my dad loved being around his family and always lived life to the fullest. I wish we had more years with him, but I can say with confidence that he was happy and content that he had an excellent life.
There are a few milestones I want to talk about that I know would be important to my dad.
My Mum and Dad met working in a bakery. The day he got married to my mum I know he would have felt so lucky to have found someone he loved and could spend his life with or as my nan put it when preparing for today, he married the best tart in the bakery. They were always there for each other, and I know my dad would have very much appreciated the emotional support she gave him especially the last few years. It wasn’t easy for her either dealing with my dad’s illness but I’m so proud of my mum and dad for how they dealt with everything. Susan and I could not have wished for better parents.
The day my sister NAME and I were both born but especially me were big moments for my dad and changed his life forever, hopefully for the better but maybe not always. Also, important moments were when his Grandchildren NAME and NAME were born who may not know how lucky they are to have had my dad around for the time they did but they will when they are older as they look back to Grampys example and guidance.
My dad was so happy that NAME and I had both found what he had with my mum. For NAME it was NAME and for me it was NAME. NAME and I have chosen the easier option of having dogs rather than children which my dad, despite saying he never wanted a dog around or had any interest in them ended up loving having both NAME and NAME around. He would play with them despite it being hard for him and enjoyed taunting them with toys and chews and they would taunt him back by leaving things just out of reach for him.
The day my sister NAME and NAME got married was an emotional and wonderful day for my dad. Getting to walk his daughter down the aisle was a happy and proud moment for him. we didn’t know if he’d be able to do it beforehand, but he wasn’t going to miss the chance, so he got through it as he always did. My dad was not known for speaking in large crowds or being confident at it, in fact it was the opposite. However, the speech he gave at NAME wedding was incredible, funny, emotional, and memorable. He spoke from the heart without anything prepared and I am so proud he not only got through it but delivered an unforgettable speech.
There was never any pressure put on me or NAME. The only thing he wanted for us was to be happy and if we were happy that was ok for him.
I want to finish by sharing what some of his closest family wanted me to say on their behalf. This is their words read out by me.
His Wife NAME says, Mark was the love of my life, my soulmate with so many happy years together. Those years were rich with happy memories with our family. No more pain and suffering now my darling, rest now. My everlasting love always.
His daughter NAME says, I could not have asked for a better dad. You were always supportive and patient in everything I did. Your Grandchildren NAME and NAME will remember you as wise and funny, you always took an interest in what they liked. I will miss you incredibly, but you will forever be in my heart.
His Mother NAME says, Words cannot say how much I will miss you. I get comfort that you are not in any pain now. Sleep my darling until we are together again.
His brother NAME says, I will love and miss you always, brother.
His Brother NAME says, Dear Brother I will start by saying at least you are now at peace and pain free. You will be deeply missed by us all, after all you were the diplomatic one of the family. Mark was the most patient and calm member of us all and nothing was any bother for him to do. Love you Mark God bless you and thank you for being my brother, Love NAME.
His Son in law NAME says, thank you for welcoming me into your family with nothing but love and kindness. We shared a love for formula 1 and I’ll think of you whenever I’m watching a race.
His Niece NAME says, Uncle Mark was always kind and caring to me and you could tell how much he loved his family. Whenever I visited and complained about something he always found a way to spin it in a positive light and give me a new perspective. My last memory is of him in his chair putting his jumper on which got stuck after his arms were through. He made me jump because I thought he was headless and gave us all a good laugh. I feel lucky to have had him as an uncle.
Finally, for me he was my hero. I owe him everything. I couldn’t have wished for a better man to look up to and learn from. My respect for how he lived his life despite the challenges he faced is immeasurable. He never complained, never worried, never gave up, he lived his life to the maximum he could, doing the things he enjoyed around the people he loved right until the very end.
Dad I’m going to miss you beyond words and its going to be hard, but I will draw from what you taught me and live my life the best I can. It is said that a person is never truly gone as long as they are still talked about. Well, the impact You had on those around you means stories of you will be passed down for generations. The memories I have of you will stay in my head and the love and respect I have for you will remain in my heart forever.

2023.05.29 23:18 gtdinasur Raider help
I'm posting help for all you raiders struggling out there. I see the biggest complaint is "the survivors jump me and I never get a chance to fight back, that's unfair".
Well good news you don't have to fight fair either. People act like a whole team of 7 survivors just magically pop up in their face and it's auto over, it's not. You can literally see on the HUD whenever a survivor uses a DC, if you see that know somebody is either running away from you or towards you. I start by trying to pick off the first person I see come at me with their DC, maybe it works maybe not. But if not don't just let yourself fight survivor after survivor fight you and just get away. When I'm getting my butt handed to me, I don't try to fight the survivor that just jumped in with full dc doing a number to me I fight the teammate that is trying to run away after using DC to fight me. Once you down one survivor stay close, use that person as bait as other survivors try to fight survivors. Either they are going to let their team mate to time out or they go for a revive and a survivor reviving a team mate is the easiest target to hit in the game, boom now you got 2 down.
Let's say though that nobody ever came to help the person who timed out, next strat is to finish off the last person you are fight. Don't let that last person get away their team mates have already fled used their DC and items there is nothing left they can do to help unless they want to risk their life. You have now made your life easier by wasting a couple of their members and hopefully knocked another down giving them that red x.
You are going to lose fights vs a survivor lvl 4 and his coordinated team of a few backing them up. 1st to stop this try to find a dragon ball or a radar. If you have a dragon ball/s they will try hit and run tactics to steal them from you so stay ready. This is good though because it means the survivors are looking for you, now's the time to make them regret that. Down somebody! You shouldn't get 1 v 1'd or 1v2'd it should normally take a team of at least 3 to steal the balls from you. If they do manage to grab them and run kill the people who were left behind to deal with you.
When it does come time to fight a lvl 4 survivor try to take out some of the lower-level teammates so the lvl 4 isn't just allowed to sit back and run away while damaging you/ wasting your time as their team distracts you. We as a community complain about ETM users, there are going to be people scared that want to stay out of sight and want to do whatever it takes to get out alive. So eventually all those dragon change teammates are going to run away or run out of DC.
I know some of you will say "doesn't matter what I do the survivors are going to win" you all should just give up and stop wasting your time trying. For everyone else my advice is get used to maps and raiders and level up your raider's best abilities, it's going to be a harder game when your raider isn't leveled up highly. Next have a game plan. I like to destroy vending machines, search loot crates for radars, blow up building so survivors can't hide in them and use my scouting or ki sensing abilities as much as possible. If I ever find a survivor, I try to make them waste their DC (they won't be ready for a fight anytime soon or they will be forced to use their items/cooldown drink to get ready again). As well you don't always have to chase someone down across the map and spend all your time getting lead along. If they did a good job of escaping move onto the next task.
When finding multiple survivors what I do is target the people who have already been down once, level 0 and level 3 survivors in that order, your goal is to make their teamwork go down the drain. You know what it's like when your fellow survivors are getting messed up early it hurts moral, people will be less likely to pull of heroic acts successfully. The first two in that scenario are easy to down but then why the level 3, you want to take out the biggest threat when people try spreading out and running pick off that level 3.
Most of this was general and sometimes you go vs that 7 team premade of lvl 150's with IT & EF with team work they developed over months of playing together and they get good luck with items in game. But most of us me included are wishing we could get at least 3 new supers or active/passive skill, aren't lvl 150, and don't have premade of 7. I mean switch doesn't even have voice comms.
I just have been seeing a lot of post for months now about people having bad raider games and I don't want to come off as attacking these people who post so figured I'd finally make this. This was all written on a whim so I could be wrong and I will appreciate feedback if you have something constructive. Goodluck to everyone out there and cya in season 3 on Xbox hopefully they give us crossplay someday.

2023.05.29 23:18 Hiridios One of my best friends died in a tragic motor cycle accident and I finally made my peace
First let me say that English isn‘t my first language so this might be full of mistakes + I‘m writing this on my mobile phone. Also, this might be a longer post, so buckle up.
Well, last sunday my younger brother‘s best friend died in a motor cycle accident very unexpectedly. For the past week I‘ve been trying to wrap my head around this thought but when we were finally able to see him laid out, realisation hit and it hit hard for us all. He was 22 years old and just too young to die. Our friendgroup would usually hang out at his house, since it was right about the center of where everyone lived and he had like the most chill parents, so we were very close with his family too.
His girlfriend was driving about 100 meters behind him in a car and barely witnessed what happened. She‘s been a wreck since but is getting better thanks to professional help. My brother is handling it amazing, even though I can see how hurt and sad he is, he‘s been the glue holding everything together, being there for the late friends parents aswell as his sisters. The rest of the friendgroup, a group of now 11 remaining friends has gradually accepted the death. Everyone is coping differently, but most have been together for the most part of last week. For me he was like a litte brother. Since I now live about an hour away and had no way to travel, I haven‘t had time to be there with my friends and grieve up until the laying out on thursday. I was at the funeral service again with another mutual friend today and had some time alone to tell him what I should have told him when he was alive, thanked him for every moment we had together and said goodbye a last time before his funeral next friday. This is the last time I will see him and even though it breaks my heart, I was able to make my peace and accept it. It‘s hard to get to work knowing that the world is still spinning and live goes on, but we have to keep going for his sake.
I am so thankful for having had the privilege and honor to call you my friend and brother. You were the best of us all and you went too early. You showed us how to enjoy the small things in life and how to achieve the big things. You are our idol and we will miss you forever. But don‘t worry, we will take care of your parents, your sisters and your loved ones, as long as we live. For that you may rest in peace until we are all united again brother. Rip

2023.05.29 23:17 HumerusCapitellum Canyon Grizl v Grail: Would love to hear your thoughts and advice
Buying a new bike soon, budget is 3-3.5 k. I am looking for an all rounder that I can use for bikepackingas well as blasting gravel trails. I plan to purchase a second set of wheels and tires to convert it easily for road riding and touring with friends. I am also very interested in longevity of the bike and for it to hold its value as best it can. I live in Southern California and am planning on taking numerous trips over the next 5-6 years up and down the west coast with a combination of road riding as well as using motor vehicles and Amtrak to move up and down the west coast to start tours and bike packing trips.
I have seen online and heard that the Grail is the "All rounder" of choice, but I would like to explore national parks and ride on some more technical and challenging MTB trails as well as light gravel and the road. For this the Canyon website recommends the Grizl, and this also aligns with my bike packing aspirations since it has more mounting points.
I would sincerely appreciate any advice or anecdotes to help me make this decision, I am recovering from knee surgery right now and cycling is now my endurance sport of choice as it is far better for the knees compared to running.

2023.05.29 23:17 JefferyFarnol Xenoblade 3 Final Thoughts (Previous Post Follow-Up)
I made a
post a while ago when I had just started Xenoblade 3 and I've now come to the end of it and my opinion is quite different. I liked all the characters and I don't think they are shallow as I originally stated. My problem was that I really struggled to get into it at the beginning and I think that is a side-effect of the barren theme of the world and how long it took for the combat to be fully unlocked, though that theme is appropriate to the story and works well from that perspective. Someone commented on my first post that 3 is a lot more thematic than 2 which really throws you in to a fast-paced story. I think that is right and I enjoyed the darker and more serious tone. If someone does get really immersed and has the time to spend, I think that doing all the little sidequests and exploring the whole map (as I did with 1 and 2) will show that there is a lot of life in it. However, focussing on the main story it did feel like I was tramping through a fairly empty world from colony to colony and I sometimes forgot what my actual aim was (though that might be because I stretched 40 hours of gameplay over six months).
I did sometimes feel that whilst parts of the story were very fleshed-out, other parts which would have been more central in previous games are taken for granted. For instance, the Lucky Seven sword was just given to Noah with very little fanfare unlike the Monado or Aegis - surely a sword that can destroy the flame clocks would not just be lying around like that? It's hinted that Riku has some connection to Nia so maybe that will be explained in the DLC (I haven't played that yet!) That's probably my ultimate impression of the story, that it excells in areas where previous games fell short but the inverse is also true. It came out comparatively quickly after DE and I wonder if that shows in areas that are slightly lacking.
Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it in the end and I regret that I didn't play it more early on but despite the urge to start Zelda, I started to really love it after chapter 5 and I've not rushed to the finish over the last two weeks. I would say that I think the story and emotion is perhaps the best of the trilogy but other parts of the game felt a bit rushed. I wasn't working when 2 came out so I had all the time in the world to pour over 200 hours into it but that's not the case now and that will also have contributed to my feelings about the game. I did all the Hero Quests and after I complete Zelda I will play the DLC.

2023.05.29 23:17 combatmaster147 Guys, just have fun
I play Arena 98% of the time. The other 2% is Joust, exclusively with friends on the mic. This game frustrates me sometimes, but it's one of my favorites.
I was just in an Arena match where we all tried our best and still lost. I was Mulan (6/4/??) And got top stats across the board for our team (relevant). It wasn't crazy, and not because I was particularly great, our team just wasn't stellar. I solo queued. It happens.
After the match I received a series of messages on Xbox from the opposing Achilles (8/1/??) going on about how Mulan is busted and how she's the worst god in the game and anyone who plays her is brain dead.
Now, I don't regularly engage with toxicity, but since they were so kind as to give me their unsolicited opinion, I decided to ask why they thought so and that my stats were likely a fluke. We had a small debate (I promise it was civil enough) and shockingly it led nowhere.
So this is just a reminder that I love this game. I know (most of) you love this game. If you find yourself feeling overly passionate about something in-game, take a deep breath, a drink of water, and a minute to collect your thoughts. We're all in this community together, whether you like it or not.
TL;DR - Let's have fun and not take things so seriously. Take a break every once in awhile and take care of yourself.

2023.05.29 23:16 Bittersweet_7 UOttawa Healthsci vs. UofT life science vs. Western MedSci
Currently on the waitlist for Queens healthsci, as this doesn't guarantee a spot, I have to accept one of my other offers (UOttawa health science, UofT life science (at either Scarborough or Mississauga), Western Medical Science). My end goal is to get into medical school through one of these programs, but I'm having a hard time deciding which one would be best.
Main things to consider:
- Focused environment (atmosphere of the school - preferably not a party school or the opposite extreme)
- Ease of getting into medical school (difficulty of maitaining a high GPA, extracurriculars/research opportunities available, courses in the program - would it require using elective space for med. pre-reqs)
- Size of the program (how difficult/easy is it to communicate/reach out to professors and TAs + making friends with people in the program, how competitive are those around you in terms of getting into medical school)
Also if you're currently attending any of these programs with a similar goal, I would appreciate if you could talk about your experience :)

2023.05.29 23:15 MargeryStewartBaxter How Do You "Impossible"
Hey all,
Like many I've been playin since day 1. I'd like to think I'm proficient as far as the average person goes but clearly the elite are leaps and bounds above me in skill. I don't mind being worse, I just don't comprehend certain boundaries that seperate us.
How do you decide to split different creature groups? Where did you learn which to split and when? When Bless is best or Lightning Bolt (in very specific circumstances)? Organization from top to bottom a la shooter slot#1 vs shooter slot#4?
I will try to dedicate time to YT vidoes but I don't just want to watch 100+ hours of pros playing to learn from them. If that's the only way so be it but I can't for life of me beat the damn HOTA campain. Stage 2 where you have three months to capture all dwellings has been demoralizing. I've tried a dozen times and always fail.
Thank you in advance.

2023.05.29 23:14 presentmethatass Advice and Tips Needed!
I'm 25M, been studying in the Uk for close to 2 years now. Have always been intrigued by Iceland hence I made a last minute decision to go on a solo trip to Iceland this coming 3rd of June. My return flight is booked on 17th of June. As of right now, I've only got my flight tickets booked and nothing else. This will be my first time venturing completely on my own.
Based on the things I've gathered from YouTube and Reddit, it'll be unwise of me to set Reykjavík as home base. I've read that the city can be fully explored within 3 days, and that most other interesting places are outside and some even 6hr drive away from the city. How true is this?
As mentioned, I'm still a student and have only just finish Bar school, ideally I'd like to not overspend. Some additional questions that I have are:
- Should I set base in Reykjavík, book a cheap hostel, and then go on individual guided tours (Golden Circle, Sniper's Nest, Whale and Puffin Tour, Food Walk, South Coast)? Or would it make sense for me to rent a car, drive around, and explore Iceland on my own and save on accommodation by sleeping in the car or at campsites? My concern is that I've read that petrol and rental cars are expensive in Iceland, and the roads can be quite tricky to drive on.
- Everywhere online I can see ads for booking guided tours, if I were to opt for guided tours, what are some websites worth noting in terms of value, and not having too large of a tour group?
- Blue lagoon, to avoid or not? Some say its not worth the expense?
- I'm a student on summer break in the Uk, and I have extra time to spare, is 13 days too much / long? Should I shorten or to extend my visit?
- Throwing out the final question here but if anyone happens to know if the Malaysian driver's license is valid in Iceland, please do let me know below, thanks in advance! I've been driving for about 8 years now and can drive both manual transmission as well.
In the meantime, I'll dive into this subreddit and look for more information. I do apologise if I'm asking questions that have previously been asked, but given the spontaneity of this adventure, I'm pressed for time right now. Cheers!

2023.05.29 23:14 JoshAsdvgi THE BRAVE WHO WENT ON THE WARPATH ALONE
| THE BRAVE WHO WENT ON THE WARPATH ALONE AND WON THE NAME OF THE LONE WARRIOR There was once a young man whose parents were not overburdened with the riches of this world, and consequently could not dress their only son in as rich a costume as the other young men of the tribe, and on account of not being so richly clad as they, he was looked down upon and shunned by them. He was never invited to take part in any of their sports; nor was he ever asked to join any of the war parties. In the village lived an old man with an only daughter. Like the other family, they were poor, but the daughter was the belle of the tribe. She was the most sought after by the young men of the village, and warriors from tribes far distant came to press their suit at winning her for their bride. All to no purpose; she had the same answer for them as she had for the young men of the village. The poor young man was also very handsome despite his poor clothes, but having never killed an enemy nor brought home any enemies' horses he was not (according to Indian rules) allowed to make love to any young or old woman. He tried in vain to join some of the war parties, that he might get the chance to win his spurs as a warrior. To all his pleadings, came the same answer: "You are not fit to join a war party. You have no horses, and if you should get killed our tribe would be laughed at and be made fun of as you have such poor clothes, and we don't want the enemy to know that we have any one of our tribe who dresses so poorly as you do." Again, and again, he tried different parties, only to be made fun of and insulted. One night he sat in the poor tepee of his parents. He was in deep study and had nothing to say. His father, noticing his melancholy mood, asked him what had happened to cause him to be so quiet, as he was always of a jolly disposition. The son answered and said: "Father, I am going on the warpath alone. In vain I have tried to be a member of one of the war parties. To all of my pleadings I have got nothing but insults in return." "But my son, you have no gun nor ammunition. Where can you get any and how can you get it? We have nothing to buy one for you with," said the father. "I don't need any weapons. I am going to bring back some of the enemies' horses, and I don't need a gun for that." Early the next morning (regardless of the old couple's pleadings not to go unarmed) the young man left the village and headed northwest, the direction always taken by the war parties. For ten days he traveled without seeing any signs of a camp. The evening of the tenth day, he reached a very high butte, thickly wooded at the summit. He ascended this butte, and as he sat there between two large boulders, watching the beautiful rays of the setting sun, he was suddenly startled to hear the neigh of a horse. Looking down into the beautiful valley which was threaded by a beautiful creek fringed with timber, he noticed close to the base of the butte upon which he sat, a large drove of horses grazing peacefully and quietly. Looking closer, he noticed at a little distance from the main drove, a horse with a saddle on his back. This was the one that had neighed, as the drove drifted further away from him. He was tied by a long lariat to a large sage bush. Where could the rider be, he said to himself. As if in answer to his question, there appeared not more than twenty paces from him a middle aged man coming up through a deep ravine. The man was evidently in search of some kind of game, as he held his gun in readiness for instant use, and kept his eyes directed at every crevice and clump of bush. So intent was he on locating the game he was trailing, that he never noticed the young man who sat like a statue not twenty paces away. Slowly and cautiously the man approached, and when he had advanced to within a few paces of the young man he stopped and turning around, stood looking down into the valley. This was the only chance that our brave young friend had. Being unarmed, he would stand no show if the enemy ever got a glimpse of him. Slowly and noiselessly he drew his hunting knife (which his father had given him on his departure from home) and holding it securely in his right hand, gathered himself and gave a leap which landed him upon the unsuspecting enemy's shoulders. The force with which he landed on the enemy caused him (the enemy) to lose his hold on his gun, and it went rattling down into the chasm, forty feet below. Down they came together, the young man on top. No sooner had they struck the ground than the enemy had out his knife, and then commenced a hand to hand duel. The enemy, having more experience, was getting the best of our young friend. Already our young friend had two ugly cuts, one across his chest and the other through his forearm. He was becoming weak from the loss of blood, and could not stand the killing pace much longer. Summoning all his strength for one more trial to overcome his antagonist, he rushed him toward the chasm, and in his hurry to get away from this fierce attack, the enemy stepped back one step too far, and down they both went into the chasm. Interlocked in each other's arms, the young man drove his knife into the enemy's side and when they struck the bottom the enemy relaxed his hold and straightened out stiff and dead. Securing his scalp and gun, the young man proceeded down to where the horse was tied to the sage bush, and then gathering the drove of horses proceeded on his return to his own village. Being wounded severely he had to ride very slowly. All the long hours of the night he drove the horses towards his home village. In the meantime, those at the enemies' camp wondered at the long absence of the herder who was watching their drove of horses, and finally seven young men went to search for the missing herder. All night long they searched the hillsides for the horses and herder, and when it had grown light enough in the morning they saw by the ground where there had been a fierce struggle. Following the tracks in the sand and leaves, they came to the chasm where the combatants had fallen over, and there, lying on his back staring up at them in death, was their herder. They hastened to the camp and told what they had found. Immediately the warriors mounted their war ponies (these ponies are never turned loose, but kept tied close to the tepee of the owner), and striking the trail of the herd driven off by our young friend, they urged forth their ponies and were soon far from their camp on the trail of our young friend. All day long they traveled on his trail, and just as the sun was sinking they caught sight of him driving the drove ahead over a high hill. Again they urged forth their tired ponies. The young man, looking back along the trail, saw some dark objects coming along, and, catching a fresh horse, drove the rest ahead at a great rate. Again all night he drove them, and when daylight came he looked back (from a high butte) over his trail and saw coming over a distant raise, two horsemen. These two undoubtedly rode the best ponies, as he saw nothing of the others. Driving the horses into a thick belt of timber, he concealed himself close to the trail made by the drove of horses, and lay in ambush for the two daring horsemen who had followed him so far. Finally they appeared on the butte from where he had looked back and saw them following him. For a long time they sat there scouring the country before them in hopes that they might see some signs of their stolen horses. Nothing could they see. Had they but known, their horses were but a few hundred yards from them, but the thick timber securely hid them from view. Finally one of them arose and pointed to the timber. Then leaving his horse in charge of his friend, he descended the butte and followed the trail of the drove to where they had entered the timber. Little did he think that he was standing on the brink of eternity. The young man hiding not more than a hundred yards from him could have shot him there where he stood, but wanting to play fair, he stepped into sight. When he did, the enemy took quick aim and fired. He was too hasty. Had he taken more careful aim he might have killed our young friend, but his bullet whizzed harmlessly over the young man's head and buried itself in a tree. The young man took good aim and fired. The enemy threw up both hands and fell forward on his face. The other one on the hill, seeing his friend killed, hastily mounted his horse and leading his friend's horse, made rapidly off down the butte in the direction from whence he had come. Waiting for some time to be sure the one who was alive did not come up and take a shot at him, he finally advanced upon the fallen enemy and securing his gun, ammunition and scalp, went to his horse and drove the herd on through the woods and crossing a long flat prairie, ascended a long chain of hills and sat looking back along his trail in search of any of the enemy who might continue to follow him. Thus he sat until the long shadows of the hills reminded him that it would soon be sunset, and as he must get some sleep, he wanted to find some creek bend where he could drive the bunch of ponies and feel safe as to their not straying off during the night. He found a good place for the herd, and catching a fresh horse, he picketed him close to where he was going to sleep, and wrapping himself in his blanket, was soon fast asleep. So tired and sleepy was he that a heavy rain which had come up, during the night, soaked him through and through, but he never awakened until the sun was high in the east. He awoke and going to the place where he had left the herd, he was glad to find them all there. He mounted his horse and started his herd homeward again. For two days he drove them, and on the evening of the second day he came in sight of the village. The older warriors, hearing of the young man going on this trip alone and unarmed, told the parents to go in mourning for their son, as he would never come back alive. When the people of the village saw this large drove of horses advancing towards them, they at first thought it was a war party of the enemy, and so the head men called the young warriors together and fully prepared for a great battle. They advanced upon the supposed enemy. When they got close enough to discern a lone horseman driving this large herd, they surrounded the horses and lone warrior, and brought him triumphantly into camp. On arriving in the camp (or village) the horses were counted and the number counted up to one hundred and ten head. The chief and his criers (or heralds) announced through the whole village that there would be a great war dance given in honor of the Lone Warrior. The whole village turned out and had a great war dance that was kept up three days and three nights. The two scalps which the young man had taken were tied to a pole which was placed in the center of the dance circle. At this dance, the Lone Warrior gave to each poor family five head of horses. Being considered eligible now to pay his respects to any girl who took his fancy, he at once went to the camp of the beautiful girl of the tribe, and as he was always her choice, she at once consented to marry him. The news spread through the village that Lone Warrior had won the belle of the nation for his bride, and this with the great feat which he had accomplished alone in killing two enemies and bringing home a great herd of horses, raised him to the rank of chief, which he faithfully filled to the end of his days. And many times he had to tell his grandchildren the story of how he got the name of the Lone Warrior. submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 23:13 CB_scorpio Project Dialogue: Viktor Vostrikov CO- Founder JewelSwap by @EntityFinance
| Get an exclusive look inside @JewelSwapX!🕵️♂️ We sat down with their Co-Founder last Wednesday and delved into #NFTs, their modules, and plans for the future! Project Dialogue: Viktor Vostrikov CO- Founder JewelSwap Here are the top 3 key takeaways from our conversation🧵 Q: Can you talk about the process JewelSwap goes through to ensure the security of its smart contracts? Since there isn't any audits mentioned on the JewelSwap Website or Docs section. A: A: Our approach to securing smart contracts on JewelSwap is deliberate and transparent. The initial strategy was to hold off on auditing until we had completed a substantial portion of the code. While the cost of audits is significant, that wasn't our primary reason for this decision. We are focused on ensuring that the code that is actually being utilized by our platform is the code that gets audited. This way, we avoid a scenario where we audit, say, 50% of our work, then add a host of new features upon release, leaving that additional 50% unaudited. In our commitment to transparency, I must acknowledge that we faced some delays in the auditing process due to our decision to engage an audit company from outside of the #MultiversX ecosystem, which didn't prove as effective as we had hoped. However, I am pleased to report that we expect to complete the audit process within the next one to two weeks. This marks a significant milestone in our journey towards ensuring the integrity and security of our platform for our users. Q: NFT Finance is redefining the utility of #NFTs by introducing #DeFi type products. Do you think JewelSwap is best suited to pursue this emerging trend due to the nature of the products you have already? What do you think are the potential risks and challenges associated with integrating DeFi principles into NFTs? A: Before embarking on the JewelSwap journey, I admit my knowledge of #NFTs was somewhat limited. However, the creation of our proprietary Collection "Comverse" and engaging with our vibrant community has truly deepened my understanding of what constitutes a successful NFT project. I believe this knowledge informs our approach to the NFT #Finance sector and positions us well to navigate the new landscape. In terms of potential challenges, one significant issue could be the potential illiquidity of NFTs. A dynamic and active marketplace is crucial for maintaining asset liquidity. Fortunately, #MultiversX boasts one of the most robust marketplaces in the field, enhanced by an impressive UI/UX design that stimulates trading activity. The consistent high ranking of MultiversX across various blockchains in terms of volume is testament to this. Another possible risk is the demand for utility in NFT projects from the community. A project's longevity can be jeopardized without ongoing development activity. However, JewelSwap offers a solution by providing an additional utility for collections: the ability for the community to borrow $EGLD. This not only adds value but also incentivizes members to invest in tokens, generate profit, and repay loans. Moreover, the maintenance of a positive, transparent, and communicative environment is key to fostering a thriving community. The enhanced utility offered by JewelSwap contributes to this dynamic, and should projects uphold this transparency and vibrancy, they can leverage JewelSwap as an additional benefit. Ultimately, JewelSwap aims to deliver an enjoyable and beneficial platform for users. After all, why would anyone want to stay in a Discord channel that isn't delivering a valuable and entertaining experience? As long as projects can sustain this positive and transparent community spirit, JewelSwap is well-equipped to support them in the emerging trend of NFT Finance. Q: Buy Now Pay Later and rental services are common in traditional finance and #ecommerce. What are some of the challenges faced in implementing BNPL and rental models in the context of NFTs? Do you think these models could influence the way people interact with NFTs in the long run? And of course is it something that you see exploring with JewelSwap down the line? A: Absolutely, we've already incorporated a feature that mirrors the "Buy Now Pay Later" concept. This is currently operational under " #Mortgages", but perhaps a better name might have been "Down Payment," given the mechanics of the feature. Here's how it works: suppose an NFT is priced at 7 EGLD, a user can utilize just 2 EGLD to acquire it. The remaining 5 EGLD is structured as a loan that needs to be repaid. However, inherent risks accompany this process, and one obvious risk is the possibility of failing to redeem the NFT, leading to its liquidation. Despite this risk, our community has embraced this feature and instances of non-repayment and subsequent #NFT liquidation have been surprisingly rare. Any NFTs that do get stuck in the Smart Contract due to this process can be later listed on a secondary marketplace. So, in essence, yes, we're already exploring these financial models in the NFT context with JewelSwap and continuously assessing their influence on user interaction with NFTs. 2023.05.29 23:13 Odorousbag87 My friends are doing amazing things and I am proud of them...
As the title says, I am single M36 and I have a pair of friends that I am proud for. They are renewing their vows with their husband in July. I felt the need to post something postive for a change because we can get caught up on the awful stuff on this reddit.
But seriously, its a freeing feeling to be happy for the people in your life rather than be resentful. It's easier but it's not right. Like I just saw her wedding dress, because they are doing a ceromony as well. And I thought to myself "They are renewing their vows, have great jobs and a kid. What have I done with my life?" As I pack up my MTG deck for tonight to play modern. 1 thing came to my mind and only one thing. "Living our best lives".
The point of the post is just give myself a space where I can say this, as I don't think many of my friends would get it. It's also a unique, for me, feeling to have.
I see a lot of lonliness on this platform and I feel your pain. Not for everyone but sometimes if you slow down the slightest and realize what you DO have rather than not, you can at least be temporarily happy. But also, emobying a sort of notion of making the best of yourself as well, which isn't easy as well.
That's all, I wish everyone the best .
EDIT: As something came to mind, I acknowledge that this is the bare minimum on how someone should think. I am not saying that this is special in anyway or like extraordinary at all. I simply wanted to get something off my chest and provide perspective.

2023.05.29 23:12 incognito_mosquito79 Just a little shout-out to the most perfect little pitty EVER...
| My husband and I took our 1-year-old 60 lb pitbull, Darcy, to our Memorial Day picnic that we have every year. We weren't sure what to expect, but we know she is not aggressive in the least. We got there and walked her around to let her get a lay of the land and say hello to everyone. We tethered her up just outside the pavilion so she wouldn't get tangled, but also wouldn't be too far from us. While we were keeping an eye on her, we'd let her off the tether, but keep a leash on her and let her walk around freely. She was doing really well and staying with me EVERYWHERE until I got caught in a conversation with my aunt and Darcy wandered off. Of course, she decides to mosey over to a foreign couple who didn't like dogs. 😒 the woman was so afraid of her that she got up on the table bench to get away and the guy was recording on his phone. My cousin got to them before me and he grabbed Darcy for me, apologizing to the couple. It felt like a bit of an overreaction, but for people who don't have dogs, how would they know a dog's body language? It was my bad and I learned my lesson: just keep her tethered unless I'm keeping an eye on her. After a little while, my aunt's stepson and his family showed up with their kids, 2-year old girl and 4-year-old boy. Their son couldn't wait to see my sister's Great Dane that he met at the picnic last year. Unfortunately he had died suddenly just 6 weeks ago 😟. The two kids met Darcy and were immediately in love. She had never met little kids before but she let them hug her and stick their face in her face and poke her... she was just so tolerant! Since Darcy was a puppy, I touched her everywhere, our faces are always together and I'm always giving her kisses on her muzzle, so I'm pretty sure I've fully desensitized her. Their mother, who seemed apprehensive at first learning Darcy was a pitbull, eventually didn't bat an eye at them playing together. She knew I was kind of being an eagle parent to our puppy playing with her kids and she was able to trust her. Once I saw her turn her back, I knew Darcy had won her over how much of a good girl she was! The little boy walked around with Darcy on her leash and despite the fact that this dog was nearly pulling my arm out of its socket on our walk in the woods a few hours ago, she just walked with him like a little lady 🥺. She really was the best advocate for her breed that day. I feel like she changed a lot of minds about the pitbull breed and I'm so proud of her 🥰 I truly don't know how I keep getting so lucky to have the best critters in my life! TLDR: We brought our 1yo 60 lb pitbull puppy, Darcy, to a picnic and she was chill af. Two tiny children were in her face, hugging on her, and poking her and she just went with it. Even though she typically pulls on the leash, she was incredibly gentle with the kids. I didn't train her to do this! She is just the best little pitty puppy EVER! She changed a lot of minds about pitbulls that day 🥰 She's pretty tuckered out after yesterday! Thanks for reading! submitted by incognito_mosquito79 to pitbulls [link] [comments] |
2023.05.29 23:12 Groanalisa How to get funds moved over?
I retired a couple of years ago (60f). I have a ROTH, an individual IRA, a rollover 401k, and taxable investment accounts. Prior to retiring, I signed up with a financial planner to be sure I had my ducks in a row. The accounts are held in a TD Ameritrade custodial account. Currently being charged 1.89% of AUM, so I would like to discontinue using them and do it myself, using a simple Bogle-esque type plan to keep my expenses down.
My questions revolve around how, exactly, does one go through the motions, beyond signing up at a different custodian and telling them to pull it all out? I'm concerned about taxes. Do they have to liquidate all positions to cash first, then reinvest? Or if I do a self-directed version in TD Ameritrade (I already have an individual brokerage account at TDA, and an HSA account at Fidelity), can I simply transfer them to my other account? For instance, can I take the funds in my TDA Roth and move them to a new Roth without penalties (excluding the termination fee at the custodian)? Sort of keeping the same portfolio, just changing ownership? I would want to simplify many of the holdings, but that is the theory. I do realize that all my TDA accounts are going to become Schwab later on. I'm not unhappy about that, except for the low rate cash deposits they make you keep.
Are there any flowcharts or articles on which accounts to pull, how to avoid taking tax hits, etc? Are there any rules about best practices?

2023.05.29 23:10 Cal_Aesthetics_Club Should I study abroad? Please help.
In case it wasn’t obvious from the title, I(22F) would like to study abroad.
Now, I’m admittedly reluctant to disclose the country that I have in mind because I know it’s a bit controversial so, before I do, please do try to keep an open mind.
Ok, brace yourselves: I’d like to study abroad in DPRK.
Now, I know what y’all are thinking: “Has she gone mad???” “Is this another shitpost??” “Why do I feel wet down there whenever I see Oski????”
In response to the first two questions, I’d like to say that, no, I have not gone mad and, no, this is 100% unironic. As for the the third question, same lmaoo.
Anyways, before you all advise me on whether or not studying abroad in the DPRK is a good idea, I’ll first give the myriad of reasons why I am interested in studying in the DPRK:
1.) The quality of life: I’m under the impression that the quality of life in North Korea is luxurious and unparalleled because, when I asked my friend what it was like to live there, he said, “I can’t complain!” Incidentally, I never heard from him again. :/
2.) Plenty of
amazing internship and employment opportunities to develop an outstanding work ethic! The best part is that Glorious Supreme Leader Kim Jong-Un’s magnanimous three generations law GUARANTEES that my children and grandchildren will have a place of employment and they’ll have work ethic instilled in them from a young age!
3.) I really like anime ☺️💅🏻 and I really wanna marry a hot K-Pop dude 🥵😍
4.) I think it’s really cool and courageous that DPRK is the only country in the world that has the guts to wage war against Poseidon! And judging by the fact that DPRK has never been hit by a tsunami but that they’ve successfully hit the ocean with multiple ballistic missiles, I think DPRK is winning the war! 🚀🚀🚀
5.)
Opportunities to improve my programming skills! :) So then, what do you think
Berkeley ?
Should I study abroad in DPRK?!?!
Thx in advance! <3

2023.05.29 23:09 OldLebaneseNerd [REQUEST][STEAM] SYSTEM SHOCK REMAKE for $39.99
First of all, i want us to be real and not kid ourselves, this is a long shot, it isn't even a long shot, i know i have a better shot scoring the lottery over me asking this, a brand new game that will be released in 18 hours after i put up this request, but hey, let us give it a snow ball chance in hell, end of the day, it won't hurt.
Anw, why am i asking for this game ? a $40 new game that just dropped , knowing full well the less than ideal chance of scoring it ? well the reason is simple, i never played the original because i was busy playing DOOM/DOOM 2 back when i was a kid and i don't think a 386 with 4mb of ram back then would run such a game so i stuck with the games i could run, mainly inferior games like CORRIDOR 7 and OPERATION BODY COUNT, but i loved those games so no regrets.
The first time i fell in love with this game was with SYSTEM SHOCK 2, i was older, wiser and had a decent pc to run it, loved it, tried to go back to the first, but i was still a simple man, the game looked dated and in the era of 3dfx games, an old game couldn't cut for me, something i regret until this day.
So now the remake is released and i played the demo a few years ago, was very interested, times were better, sadly no pre-orders were available, and when the game kept being delayed again and again and again, i kinda lost hope it will be real and i moved on.
Now it is real and i sadly hit a bad spot in my life due to an economical crisis that denies me buying any new games, heck, any search on my steam profile will show that most games i have are at least 3 years old except the ones i was given as gifts by amazing people here or friends on my steam profile that know i can't buy games....pity gifts, i know, but still appreciated.
anw, that is my not so humble request, i asked for many games here and got a few and i am grateful, but i knew only to ask for games on steep discount, heck , the last game i requested was under $1 and i got it and was so happy with it.
Anw, i did my best, i explained my case and now the rest is up to someone to pick it up, anw, whatever happens, i am still grateful to this community for all the goodness it spreads.
