Hey there, it's me again with another campaign-specific meme that barely anyone will understand. Funnily enough this one's somewhat related to the meme from last time that confused everyone, and I tried to be a bit less specific this time due to the general consensus being how wordy it was. I'll add context here. I'm hoping this isn't necessary to understand the meme, just supplementary context if you want the full story. The TL;DR is the meme itself, basically.
For context, this campaign is based on the /FFXIVxDND Homebrew and follows the events of FFXIV. We're currently just about to face Garuda, a Primal (being like a demigod).
So when I made my last meme I had just been cornered by a soldier from the evil empire (the Garleans) and then the guy left and our party's Cleric had a half-hour long lore dump. Well the Garleans subsequently murdered my party's friends, or at least most of them. In turn we decided to plot our revenge, but first we have to slay Garuda. Which we'd determined, as the Garleans are spying on us, will allow us to set a trap for them.
So for tonight's session one major detail needs to be noted. About a month ago a friend of the Cleric's joined. However, they decided their character doesn't fit with our group (said character is very opposed to violence and is afraid of a lot. Doesn't fit with our party dynamic which is fair. Nobody forced them to make a new character and they came to that decision on their own) and have made a new one they have yet to introduce, a Garlean Gunbreaker. Anyways we're sent to the desert (Camp Drybone) to get a crystal to power our airship to fight Garuda. The crystal is actually located where the party Samurai fought Gilgamesh, a recurring Final Fantasy boss (it was a Battle on a Big Bridge.
So we get the crystal and then all of a sudden the DM describes us getting shot at. We all leap for cover and find Garleans telling us to surrender. However, the supposed Garleans refer to us as Eikon slayers, not Primal slayers which, if you know anything about FF, sets off a ton of alarms for us players because Eikons are from a game that hasn't even come out yet. Also, the Garleans have no idea who the guy who murdered our friends is and swear his name means he's a peasant, meaning it's impossible that he's as high-ranking as we claimed. Meaning we don't actually know who he is. Oh and the Garleans haven't actually mentioned Garlemald, just that they're from an "empire" and are part of an elite Magitek squad. They're also Gunbreakers, though.
All of the party, and the Garleans, are confused because the details we know about each other don't line up. We agree to a truce to clear all of this up, and our Samurai asks their names after we provide ours. One of these Garleans reveals their name, which is that of the Samurai's younger sister who was believed to have been killed by the Primal Leviathan as part of the Samurai's backstory (along with the rest of his family). Then the DM says that's the end of the session (which it was, we ran half an hour more than we usually do). Everyone is left stunned and confused.
This is the second time I've been left so stunned that I physically cannot wait until the next session. The first was last time, also caused by Garleans. On the bright side back then it gave me a week to formulate what I thought was a foolproof plan, but that plan never came to pass. This time we agreed to have another session this week because everyone's schedules lined up (legitimately I otherwise might not have been so lucky had I miraculously cleared the majority of my schedule for that day today, as though the universe wanted us to play again this week). The only thing we know is coming next is that the new character is likely coming through all of this in some way.
Either way, I love this game. We've been going for over two years now (in January we finally got artwork finished that me and the DM commissioned in November). The DM is evil at times but what DM isn't and why wouldn't I enjoy it? The party is the best, too. We've had some slow bits recently before Garuda but now things have amped up once more. I always look forward to Mondays though because of how much fun this game is.

2023.03.25 23:06 Hoowbie Delubrum Reginae Savage 10 Players Clear (World First)

Hello fellow Warriors of Light, this is the last time we come pester you, I promise.
Today (25/03/2023), we cleared Delubrum Reginae Savage (DRS) with a undersized group of 10 players. We believe it is once again a World First, as were our 14 and 12 players clears before.
While the 14 and 12 clears felt like a breeze outside of Slimes and Golems encounters, this 10 players clear has been a challenge as it took us 3 weeks and a total of 4 progs to finish it.
For a bit of context, the first encounter in DRS (Slimes and Golems) does not scale to the amount of people in the instance and is always scaled to 48 people. All the other ones following are scaled to 24 people. Technically, we were 'short' 14 players.
Every single mechanic and fight were handled by 10 players only. Our duelist was our Flare Star BLM player, Galveira, who helped us optimize this clear tremendously.
Our roster of 10 fantastic people:

Since we can only queue into DRS with 24 players or more, 14 friends helped us queue into the instance and then immediately left before we started Slimes and Golems. 14 incredible people made this possible for us without any other incentive than helping us prog and make this feat happen, and we cannot thank them enough for it.
Truth is, they weren't always the 14 same people so we also wanna extend our thanks to all of our fillers who were so patient and helpful, especially on our first prog which was a handful: 3 hours long.
Speaking of our first prog, our group for it was slightly different and therefore we wanna give a shoutout to the 3 people who were part of the initial prog and helped us solidify our Slimes and Golems strats, trying (wiping) a total of 17 times (good lord):

Lady Meyneth (Cerberus)
Katha Ruebens (Ragnarok)

This clear wouldn't have happened without another player who lent us his discord for organizing and organized the previous two undersized clears: Lebreau Vanih (Cerberus). Thank you, old man.
For a full summary of our progs:


Prog 1: 16 S&G wipes, 1 Seeker wipe (2.2%)
Prog 2: 7 S&G wipes, 1 QG wipe (Turret explosion)
Prog 3: 1 Queen wipe (19%), no other wipes
Prog 4: Clear on Queen Soft Enrage, no wipes

After Prog 2, we adjusted our Slimes strat and it became much more consistent.

Might wanna read the following ;-) This guide is not meant to be a thorough relic guide, just some minmaxing tips you may find useful ! Nothing new, nothing amazing, just a compilation of everything I learned along the way.
TL;DR : 1) you can do a lot less unsync dungeons than it seems for ARR relics. 2) doing each step for ALL jobs before starting the next step is much more efficient than doing one complete relic at a time. 3) keep all steps active at all times for ShB relics (passive grind). 4) never farm Poetics / GC Seals. Make a shopping list of all you need, and use that list as a currency dump. Bozja/Eureka/Hunts/Roulettes will give you more than you'll ever need. 5) get your jobs to 90 before working on ARHW relics, for easier solo unsyncs

Step 1 "Zodiac" : just do it (you could technically batch the Primals Hard with the end of HW relics, but the gain is not worth the pain)
Step 2 "Zenith" : takes 3min for ALL jobs
Step 3 "Atma" : highly painful... highly advised to farm all the atmas for ALL jobs on a job you find comfy for FATE spamming (I did it on BRD because ranged & no cast times). Make a list of zones/atmas, farm FATEs in a zone until you have exhausted them, move to another zone, rinse & repeat until you have all the atmas for all jobs. (Strategy for ppl mostly AFK, typically working with the game in background : since failed FATEs can drop atmas -I didn't verify this info myself, never got an atma this way-, you can tag all FATEs in the zone by killing one mob, then go AFK till their timer runs out. Won't work on "boss only" FATEs)
Step 4 "Animus" : the book hell. worst step of all relics all expansions. described in detail below.
Step 5 "Novus" : do Mysterious Maps as your Poetics dump until you get enough Alexandrite for all jobs. Any job any weapon, should be able to one-shot AoE all the mobs (fun fact : for me, the mysterious maps mobs were untargetable, I used WAR AoEs as a workaround...). For the materias, obviously go for the cheapest I & II you can find on the MarketBoard.
Step 6 "Nexus" : Aurum Vale is the common spam for Light grind (just have to kill the bosses & the 3 big morbols to open doors, otherwise just keep running & ignore mobs for an a run of 2:10). Yet I would also advise Navel (Extreme) : close in time efficiency if your loading times are not awful (glhf, PS5 users) and most importantly totally lazy (just avoid one landslide, otherwise spam buttons till done). Obviously if the current bonus instance is time efficient, go for it !
Step 7 "Braves" : almost entirely skipped. described in detail below.
Step 8 "Zeta" : another Light grind. same advice as step 6 ("steady" light dungeons on bonus give a one-shot full mahatma, though)

=== ARR Step 4 (BOOKS) & Step 7 (REPEATABLES) === TL;DR : sorry, but you're gonna have to read this (it's the biggest time saver)
/!\ First of all, prepare all the hand-in thingies for the Step 7 repeatables for all jobs, because you're gonna do the repeatables and store their token rewards WHILE farming books. This will require a lot of Poetics / GC Seals / Gil... So, multiply the list in THE REFERENCE by as many relics as you still need. Pro tip : have a dedicated gearset+shortcut to equip the job+ARRrelic you're currently farming books on. Laziness at its peak. You will use that shortcut a lot : it's a marathon. Put the current book on a hotbar, as well.
Before delving into the specific order of books, let's start with how to farm ONE book efficiently. Unless you are ready to launch Dalamud's blessing on your grind, this resource is a life saver, to be used until you know your targets intimately... Then :

FATEs should be your top priority. Kill any target FATE asap. Some are follow-up FATEs, so your target will most likely be the previous FATE, and some despawn notoriously quick, warranting stalking the zone until it spawns (looking at you, "Surprise"). Read the FATE notes carefully, make use of your friends to scout for you, and be ready to world hop to hunt that last missing FATE.
Leves are next in priority. Since the leves are not always available, a good strategy to ensure you almost always have access to the one you need is to keep most of them already picked up in your levequest journal (you can have 16 active at the same time, I always keep 15 already picked up while doing books : NorthThanalanLeve=5, MorDhonaLeve=2, CoerthasCentralLeve=2, MorDhonaGC=1eachGC, CoerthasCentralGC=1eachGC). If you get an awful "kill for 5min" leve, get the objectives done, then go for the enemies in that zone, then chill/netflix/whatever.
Enemies are just a matter of hunting...
Dungeons = unsync, run until you hit a wall, learn what mobs have to be killed to open each wall for next runs. Always open the chest at the end : sometimes you get a very rare and pricey drop. Other chests are crap unless you're hunting for glams or desperate for GC Seals.

Now, the most important. You should do your books for Step 4 in a specific order, to also grind the Step 7 repeatables at the same time (and start a HW relic Step 2 if you're so inclined) :

Step 1 "Animated" : The FATE pain. Pro tip : do them on BLU with a FATE spell setup (the idea & a full spellset). And have ShB relic Step 2 (Tortured/Sorrowful/Harrowing Memories) active while grinding this step !**
Step 2 "Awoken" : 10 unsync dungeons (first 3 dungeons overlap the end of the ARR relic grind above).
Steps 3-6 : pure Poetics/GC/Scrips grind. Make a list of everything needed and grind it all over time. Eureka/Bozja leveling/grinding is a good way to rack up all the Poetics required. Not advised to grind Poetics or GC Seals specifically, just use those steps to uncap them over time.
Step 7-8 : Light grind unsync. Party Finder : spam A9S in party of 4+ ppl, and stay together to also do the 13 trials of Step 8 afterwards (have your Pneumite & Archaic Enchanted Ink ready).

=== SB RELICS : Eureka, a world of its own === TL;DR : SB relics are a different world altogether. Just go live in Eureka. Not discussed here, as those relics have no interaction with the other grinds, except for the fact that you will rack up a shitload of Poetics that you will uncap on HW relics and whatnot whenever you happen to miraculously get out of Eureka.
=== ShB RELICS : keep the quests rolling ! === TL;DR : make sure all steps are active at all times for a semi-passive grind. /!\ General advice : do the 2 weekly quests in Gangos. Will slowly force you into grinding the Castrum/DDalriada stuff. Will reward you with coins for the Relic Armors (if you're doing the weapons, why not go all the way and get all armors...) /!\ Advice before hard grinding anything in Bozja zones : get at least your 10 rays of Valor (DPS perma-buff). Easily acquired by spamming Zadnor z3 FATEs & Zadnor CEs. Therefore, unless forced by the game, it's better to complete the Bozja questline before spamming anything for relics.

Step 1 "Resistance" : Poetics
Step 2 "Aug. v1" : FATE/Bozja pain. First of all, you should grind a big bunch of Memories while working on HW relics Step 1 (see above), provided you have this ShB relic step active... Then, the most efficient way to farm them is Bozja Cluster Farming ideally in a party of 8.
Step 3 "Recollection" : passively acquired over time through Leveling Roulettes or Bozja activities
Step 4 "Law's Order" : passively acquired over time through Alliance Roulette (remove most of your gear before queuing to ensure getting a Crystal Tower raid). Do your weekly quest (Castrum + Dalriada) in Gangos. Otherwise, just grind your achievement for 50x Castrum Lacus Litore.
Step 5 "Aug. v2" : do your weekly quest in Gangos (Delubrum Reginae), and go get your PotD mount (4 clears) + your solo clear of PotD, Necromancer :gigachad:. For DR(normal), join/make a PF of 8ppl requiring dps Actions+Essences for quicker runs. Go get your Cerberus mount in DR(savage) while you're at it, you'll come back with a better understanding on how to use Actions/Essences and breeze through your DR(normal) relic grind.
Step 6 "Blade's" : Do your weekly quest (Castrum + Dalriada) in Gangos. Get your HoH mount (4 clears) + your solo clear of HoH, Lone Hero :gigachad:. Otherwise, just grind your achievement for 50x Dalriada.

=== CrafteGatherer Relic Tools === Principles from this guide (doing a step on ALL jobs, then move on to next step) apply as well. But I trust self-respecting crafting nerds are already experts at planning their grinds... BTW, provided you got BiS pentamelded 6.3 crafter gear, I shared some cool macros for the Skybuilders & Resplendent expert crafts : check "community rotations" here.
=== CONCLUSION === Definitely not advised to "start farming ALL relics" by following the quests like a headless chicken, without planning for the long term. Definitely shouldn't ever "farm Poetics" (everything drops Poetics) or "farm GC Seals" (Expert Deliveries ffs), they'll come to you over time. Lastly, if you're already far enough in the game to even think about "farming ALL relics", you may also want to check the entire achievement list first, you might find chieves you could grind while working on the relics ;-) (doesn't hurt to kill that B-rank right next to that book target, does it ?)

2023.03.24 17:42 Bago-2017 Yet another player review

TL;DR - I get that as soon as rumour of this game leaked out the developers were up against it to release but I think it's a shame it came out in the state its in. The tech stuff can be patched, but the core story arc is the real issue.
Ok, here goes.
Completed the main story yesterday. This really feels like a game in two parts, one (to quote Ron Weasley) 'bloody brilliant', the other a hot mess.
Sorry for long post, but I really like this game and am really sad it's not everything it could have been.
Let me preface by saying I'm playing on PC, to be honest my laptop is a bit of a toaster, but I don't think that's generally relevant (and will 'fess up where it might be).
The brilliant.
The physical world building. Even on potato settings, the game is gorgeous. I know a lot of that is down to UE5 but the world construction is fantastic. Just wandering around is a pleasure. Hogwarts is detailed, frustratingly complex but what you'd expect of a old castle / school. The landscape around Hogsmead is what you imagine Scotland to look like, all granite and moorland.
Stuff to do density is amazing. The temptation to wander around just to see what's over there, is huge, and rewarding because there probably is something over there. Loads of dark wizards, poachers, goblins, wolves, spiders (sooo many spiders), and trolls.
Side puzzles are surprisingly engaging. I was fully expecting to be annoyed at yet another Merlin Trial, astronomy table, numeracy door, etc. Even though the basic structure of them is fairly limited, I really enjoyed them. The parkour Merlin trials were probably the least exciting, but that's a minor annoyance. There are enough that I don't think I'll remember all the solutions even on multiple play throughs.
Combat is amazing. I love playing mages in MMO / RPG games and this really captures the ranged / control aspect along with some very satisfying damage options. Almost every spell has an interaction with other spells, and the environment, so combos are fun and varied. The spell wheel / potion wheel is a bit weird but I guess that's just the game being designed for PS/XBox and ported to PC. I've got an MMO mouse and the side-buttons worked pretty well. I used 1, 2, 3, 6 for main spells, and 9, 10, 11, 12 for my spellsets. Then I had 4 & 5 for block / dodge, with 7 & 8 for Throw and Special attack. Once I got used to the thumb dancing it was great fun threading combo's together, timing blocks, dodge rolling, chucking stuff around, etc.
Companion quests were fantastic. Each had a fleshed out backstory that explained why they were on their quest and why we were helping them. I felt more connected to the companions' story that my own.
Which leads me to...
The hot mess
Your character. Especially given the quality of the companion quests, your story arc seems like an afterthought. I know it's not a historically accurate game (UK school leaving age in 1890 was 10) but WFT? Assuming the modern education age system has been transplanted to 1890's, we join in our fifth year making your character 17. What were we doing for those years? How did we suddenly get discovered? Why is Fig accompanying us? Where are our parents? Why should I (the player) care about my character?
Main story in general from the graphorn quest onwards. The first three trials were fantastic. Proper trials. Properly difficult but with mechanics that once you figured them out, made them tough but very achievable, even for a dirty casual like me. Being a squishy mage, it made sense that one or two hits would KO you, but you had the tools to work with that. By then end I did the third trial with almost no Wiggenweld usage. The final trial, you enter the main trial area, and walk straight to the pensive. No guardians, no ancient magic, no special skills, no clever puzzle, just dodge roll fight a graphorn and walk in.
Main story fights from Rookwood onward. This in part my laptop, but mostly lazy fight design. Every other fight was hectic but you felt you could use different strategies to over come enemies. From the Rookwood encounter it didn't get harder, it just got unfair. There were so many enemies that I would be KO'd by something without any telegraph. Or I'd react to one telegraph and come out straight into a second KO. The input lag got so bad I basically abandoned any subtlety and just dodge roll / basic attack until I'd thinned out a few mobs and then went back to 'proper' combat. I didn't even bother with Wiggenweld until I was back to 'proper combat' because I'd just get KO'd by something straight afterwards.
My problem isn't that they were tough. The fight against the half-invisible sentinels in Trial 2 was tough, but you could use the portal to find them and then deal with them using your regular spell combos. The fight against Death in Trial 3 was tough but you could focus the Trolls down, dodge / block the Death Wizards and eventually win through, even without all your spells.
Coupled with the fight design was that any emotional attachment I had to my character was wiped out by multiple KO without consequence. You just reload, try again, eventually RNG was on my side and I'd progress to the next phase. Rinse, repeat.
Final boss encounter, seriously, wtaf? Ranrock strolls in with Miriam's wand, shoots the final repository, and turns in to a dragon? Where was any of that in the game beforehand? Ranrock does lots of magic, and lots of nasty stuff, but never with a wand. Why hold on to it? Presumably he's killed other witches / wizards, why Miriam's wand? Why use it then, and not before? Why the transfiguration? Why a dragon? I get that the developers wanted a big scary boss battle but that just didn't make any sense. And, yes, I get the contradiction about discussing things making sense in a game about magic, but even magic has to have some internal consistency.
And while I'm discussing the boss fight, that was a complete hot mess. There was only one mob on screen so it's not that, but I got one-shot so many times in those fights. Telegraphs were late, or just didn't appear. Sometimes a fire breath would KO me, sometimes not. The mechanics were fairly simple, once I figured out to shoot the orbs then the dragon it was quite simple, except for the random KO. On the final phase (not that I realised it at the time) I was about to just give up but literally didn't have anything else to do for 45 minutes so kept cycling through. Then after a death / reset Ranrock bugged out, growling at me, didn't move, didn't attack. So I kept hitting him with basic attack. Full ancient magic bars but didn't use them as I didn't want to knock him out of his bugged state. Chipped away until he finally died. Did I feel elated, no, to be honest I was bored with the fight and was clock watching.
Cue cut scene, dramatic ending (not), eulogy, wake up, back to hunting demiguises and Daedalian keys. Biggest emotional letdown in gaming. Possibly unfair as the last game I 'finished' was FFXIV and that was a proper story, but given the whole franchise is literally based on the most popular book series of all time, I kind of expected something a little more than was delivered.
What now?
I'll keep playing on this character, I have a few side quests to finish off. I'm not usually one for dressup but will probably play around with RoR design a bit.
To be honest, I'll probably make another character and stay in Autumn mooching around the North part of the map enjoying combat and side quests. Playing around with spell interactions and finding 'fun' ways to beat the various mobs. As I said at the top, the early game is really fun and hangs together coherently, it's a nice place to be.
Will I buy the expansion pack / DLC whatever? Probably not, at least not until I've seen a few reviews to figure out if there's a story or just more dodge-rolling RNG death mechanics.
