2023.05.30 00:58 wecanhaveallthree [a very, very short story] In which our Luddic hero has a nap, appreciates the dangers of space travel, and witnesses a brief theological dispute.

Starsector is fun. Here's some very brief Starsector fiction for your perusal, which is hopefully also fun.
Trapped in crushing darkness.
Cole’s arms shot out as soon as his brain registered that his eyes were open, but seeing nothing. He flailed like a man drowning, cold, hard metal mapping out the narrowness of his coffin in swelling bruises on his skin. The isolation choked him, stole his screams, and took the very breath from his lungs in a mad panic. Great Prophet, no! A mine collapse!
He couldn’t remember which shaft he’d been working. He couldn’t remember which shift, or the run-boss, or the warnings he and all the rest had ignored every time they’d picked at Asher’s dry bones. Cole had heard them more than he’d heard the sermons, heard them so many times from so many mouths that they’d simply become the background of his penitent toil. Now his ignorance had buried him - the weight of compounded sin, as real and terrible as the great mass of collapsed rock and steel above.
His fists beat a desperate message, though only the Prophet Himself could hear it now-
An answering knock. A short, sharp staccato of raps. Mine-morse. Tunnel-signal. CALM. Again. SAFE.
A rasp, a hiss, a grinding of ancient, devilish machinery - and there was light.
An impish, wrinkled face peered into the makeshift sleep-chamber - no more than an ad hoc welding of emptied supply crates barely fit for an adult human - and smiled. ‘Bad dreams, Asherite?’
Cole gulped in a lungful of stale, recycled air. Even that tasted strange, absent the ever-present grit he’d grown up with - like it was lacking something substantial and had replaced it with ethereal trickery. He barely trusted himself to nod, and was more surprised to blurt out in a strangled gasp: ‘Am I really here?’
A great smile creased his rescuer’s face. ‘Ludd, yes! The great void, Asherite, the black between stars, the realm of Moloch and Mammon!’ A sly wink. ‘Hyperspace, lad. The captain wastes no time on this route, we went interstellar as soon as you pilgrims were stowed.’
‘I thought… I dreamed…’ Cole shook his head, and swung from the makeshift berth’s rack and unsteadily to his feet, smoothing out his faded green robe. It had belonged to his father - sewn by his mother, dyed in the orbital vats by a work-crew acquaintance - and worn only rarely, for there was little cause for celebration on murky, misbegotten Asher and no formal event but Ascension Eve. It had been the most precious thing that the family owned. ‘It doesn’t matter.’
‘Hm.’ The rescuer didn’t even reach Cole’s shoulder; he looked up into the youth’s eyes. ‘No, probably not. You Asherites never deal with the pods well. I learned the knock-language just so I wouldn’t have to wrestle any more young devils who spring up like Mammon has their soul halfway out.’
Cole paled, half-turned to the enclosed cradle that had so recently seemed his grave. He noticed more than a few others looking equally wan, and it wasn’t just the cramped quarters. The Domain had called it space-shock when they ruled the stars - Cole had read that in the pamphlet dutifully recording all the dangers of interstellar travel. They were issued, by law, to any seeking leave to travel the Pilgrim’s Path. A collection of sermons and screeds that warned of all the direful fates that could - and did - regularly befall spacers even in the local, civilized space of Pre-Collapse times. In the oft-lawless fringes of the Persean Sector, the risks were multiplied tenfold.
Perhaps it was the secret cynic, the closeted heretic, the little sinner in the back of his mind - but Cole couldn’t help but wonder. If death was so certain, why did the same ships run the same routes, carry the same cargo for so long? The independent vessels who carried pilgrims from Asher ran almost like clockwork, and some of them had been working the route for a decade or more. Their timetables - as well as their prices - were well-known, and competition for deck space was fierce, though Cole had to admit, mostly fair.
It had cost him a year’s scrip and duty-tokens to book passage, one adult male, one tough leather carryall that held a well-thumbed Teachings of the Great Prophet and his best work coverall - all his worldly possessions, in fact.
He could remember walking unsteadily through Asher’s orbital, the mercifully brief ride up from the surface in a lifter, being escorted into a carefully-shielded hanger bay to board. All the newness, all the strangeness - and when the Mudskipper’s shutters had come down, when the vast nothingness of space had first been revealed to the pilgrims, many had done exactly as Cole had. Dazed, sick with space-shock, they had retired to their own pods. More than half the doors were closed, still, even with the transport’s shutters once again down against the truly strange vistas of hyperspace.
Some things could be too much to take in at once, and the joke about holding back space-mad pilgrims had more than an edge of truth to it.
Certainly, the man who had woken Cole looked capable. Short, yes, further withered by age, but built like a compact reactor and with the grip strength of a chain hoist. Cole knew the kind, had sweated side-by-side with them in the deep pits: the run-bosses, the sergeants, the anchors and anchorites on whom every endeavour came to depend.
‘You pilgrims?’ Cole asked. Somewhere towards the ship’s fore, a voice was rising in fervent prayer. ‘You’re not of the Church?’
‘Plenty of secular ships in the trade.’ The rescuer glanced in the same direction as Cole had, and his eyes narrowed. Trouble, perhaps. ‘That surprise you?’
‘Maybe. I don’t know.’ Cole blinked. The voice grew louder, and others were joining the call. ‘I know the Church is widely accepted, but…’ He waved a hand, prevaricating, helpless to explain his meaning without harm. ‘...I’m sorry, but I know nothing of spacers.’
‘Well, we’re still human, with all the wonderful differences of opinion that come with being such.’ Now words were drifting down to them: obscenity, profanity, denunciation of evil technologies and the evocation of hellish fiends. ‘Like yonder. I don’t judge the Church by those who tempt fate by decrying the tech that keeps them from breathing vacuum. Some, like you, have nightmares when they wake. Others, well, they feel like they need to reaffirm their faith. Think if they yell enough, Ludd will hear and forgive them, eh?’ The old eyes narrowed. The smile vanished. ‘You got anything you need to be forgiven for, lad?’
Cole hesitated a moment. He’d seen the glossy matte-black object holstered on the spacer’s hip beneath their loose shipper’s tunic. You didn’t need to read a pamphlet to know what happened to troublesome passengers in hyperspace. Would the galaxy miss one more Asherite?
Again, despite himself, he answered. ‘Yes.’
The old man’s eyes searched him for what seemed an eternity against the background of raised voices, a chorus of sinners denying their weakness. Then he nodded and clapped Cole on the arm. ‘The Knights will like you, lad. You stand up straight like that, they’ll take you, no question.’
Cole started. ‘How did you-’
‘Maybe Ludd told me, eh?’
And the old man was off, smile back, heading towards the gathering commotion. What he whistled sounded almost familiar - a strange kind of music - even as the ship’s bruisers began to restore some kind of peaceable order amongst the rowdier pilgrims. A baptism of clubs to welcome the dirtsiders into this new domain, and remind them whose sufferance they travelled under.
Cole almost felt sorry for them. But they were probably happy, he reflected: sufferers calling down their suffering. Modern-day flagellants. They knew what they were doing. He assumed.
Clear of mind and conscience, he headed towards the aft quarters and the promising smell of tea.

Best Bros (Mei Suruga 🍎 & Baliyan Akki ♠️)

VS

Sayaka 👗 & Miya Yotsuba 🍀 , Kaori Yoneyama 🍚 & Minoru Fujita 🐦, EGG TART (Chie Koishikawa 🏵️ & Hagane Shinno ⚔️), Black Comaneci (Tokiko “Otoki” Kirihara 💃 & Antonio Honda 🍯), UMA (Sayaka Obihiro 💙 & kojio 🏰)

Best Bros Birthday Special Tag Gauntlet

We're going to be celebrating the birthdays of both the Best Bros once again! (Both of them were actually born on the same day: May 30th! Keep in mind, we're half a day behind Japan's time zone!) Baliyan Akki & Mei Suruga are team with unrivaled chemistry, a pair of rivals turned partners that have risen to the top of the tag division of Ichigaya (in a string of spectacular bouts) and have even taken down some powerful guests! Mei Suruga is a pin specialist and submission connoisseur (not to mention a total goblin), having recently celebrated her Fifth Anniversary (and the appearance of her second Trainee!). Mei is incredibly gifted at pro-wrestling, undoubtedly destined for greatness in the Joshi scene...though she has her eyes set on a different prize: popularity across the world! Baliyan Akki is the Ace of the promotion, a breezy elite level technician who excels at everything that is put in front of him. The way he strings techniques together is truly breath taking. He is at the top of the food chain for a reason, and it is only a matter of time before he holds a belt again! The way these two different mentalities flow together creates a perfect synergy in the ring. Even with their excellent team attacks, individual specializations, and boundless creativity, they will still be in for a brutal challenge.
Just like most celebrations in the Chocolate Square, this one will be quite violent! While there isn’t the threat of a mystery team this time, the random order of enemies makes it hard to prepare. Can they take down five of ChocoPro’s great teams in one go? Can they beat their old score? Will Mei bite someone? Tune in to find out! They will be facing (in no particular order) in 10 minute bouts:
Sayaka & Miya Yotsuba in a first time pairing! Smiling Violence and Ichigaya’s Lucky Charms are both know for their powerful striking ability and tend to compete with one another on how hard they can hit! How will the Bros endure both of the Chocolate Square’s Heavy Hitters in one match?
Kaori Yoneyama & Minoru Fujita, Two of the most frequent guests of the promotion! These two crafty veterans have both held gold in Gatoh Move and together should be an absolute menace. Buckle up for some high technical ability and dirty tricks!
EGG TART (Chie Koishikawa & Hagane Shinno) are one of the longest rivals of the Best Bros! With the speedhouse striker “Ace of the Fourth Generation” Chie and the merciless “Cold Killer” and Super Asia Champ Hagane, this will probably be one of the highest threats in the gauntlet. Expect some spice here!
Black Comaneci (Tokiko “Otoki” Kirihara & Antonio Honda) are entirely unpredictable and could very well show up in a form we’ve never seen. Though this team favors comedic antics, it should be noted that most of the comedy comes in the form of brutal slapstick and shocking weapons. It should be noted that Tokiko kicks very hard. Comaneci!
UMA (Sayaka Obihiro & kojio) represent the invading Monsters in this one. Can the charismatic veteran and the mysterious dark hero utilize their own unnatural chemistry against the Birthday Bros? These two have been impressing with their ability to adapt and overcome setbacks. Also, they are monsters.
Good Luck, Best Bros...and Happy Birthday!
Come and see the wild creativity that produced Two of the Seven AEW Women's World Champions! (Both of which have appeared on ChocoPro!) You'll be wondering if you're seeing future champs, as well. ChocoPro is the Frontier of Pro Wrestling! Match after match of hard hitting, chaotic, fun bouts with a friendly online audience. We're quickly growing, and you're welcome to come along!
Here are some Frequently Asked Questions:

“What is this?”

ChocoPro is a free online promotion run by AEW's Emi Sakura, that takes place in the legendary Ichigaya Chocolate Square! It features a steady pace of live Episode releases, fan interaction, season long story arcs, and much more! A place where the turnbuckles are replaced with 14th floor windows, the ropes are often replaced with fans, unforgiving walls provide creative avenues for skills otherwise unthinkable, and you can take solace in knowing that the referees usually do nothing. While it might be a shocking change at first, the intensity and storytelling will leave you wanting more.

“Why are they fighting in ____?”

Short answer is that it is a cost effective, unique venue with a better availability schedule and allows the roster access for training. Emi Sakura has been using this place for a long time, and you might be surprised at some of the names that have used it (even outside of ChocoPro!). There are a few in-ring Episodes and Gatoh Move has in ring shows with crowds on the YouTube channel. Think of it like the Hart Dungeon but as a promotion, if that helps!

”What are the rules?”

While special match stipulations will usually be explained before the respective matches, the general rules of ChocoPro are simple. Pins only count on the Chocolate Mat and are not broken by the edge or Wall. Submissions usually only count on the Chocolate Mat, and ARE broken by reaching the edge or wall (sometimes ceiling...). Double pins and Double submissions are legal (and encouraged) in ChocoPro Tag matches, meaning cohesive teams will always have the advantage! Count Outs only exist if specified, since many matches stray from the comfort of the Chocolate Square into the streets (and the rest of the building itself!) There is a Time Limit for each bout (based on card placement and importance) and the Referee has discretion (even if they tend to do nothing most of the time!). Every Ref is different, some have different levels of bias and speed.

“How can I support them?”

Watch the show! Even if you can't see it live, the views matter! Like & Subscribe! You can join the Channel's membership for different tiers of perks...but also, you can buy single episode Sponsorship, Digital autographed photos, and more on their shop site as well as purchase shirts from PWTees (which features some great options!) If you'd like to donate or purchase a main wall sponsorship, you can via Paypal or Patreon...and don't forget to cheer for your favorites! (especially if you want to do a superchat!)

”How come there aren’t a lot of comments on the threads?”

ChocoPro is a YouTube show, meaning the discourse happens live...in the chat! Those that comment in the threads on here tend to do so in order to help new viewers that might be intimidated by the fast moving chat. Don’t be afraid to just dive in though, the community is friendly.

“Why are you posting this here? / Are you paid for this?”

This is a wrestling forum, and I'm trying to broaden the horizons of others! There is a lot of good wrestling out there...Plus growing the fan base means more people for me to joke around with! I honestly do believe this is what a lot of fans are looking for, even if it is too different for some! But different tastes are good. Variety is the spice of life. This is a labor of love (it really doesn't take that long) considering how much work they do to put on so many shows...for free!
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me on here or on Twitter, where I’m probably a bit tired! ChocoPro is a Gauntlet again!
Season Tracker: We're 13/18 into Season 18! (Each Season is usually around 18 episodes)

As required by the subreddit here's the text; however, I highly recommend either using the google doc link or the Word doc in order to get the most up-to-date and properly formatted version including color coding! (Reddit is really weird with formatting and ruins it at certain points) Not only that, but you'll be able to leave comments right next to specific spots and I'll be able to easily update it!
P.S. As of about a month ago I'm no longer able to simply copy and paste my google doc into Reddit with all the formatting included. I have no idea why this has happened, if anyone has any advice please let me know. In the meantime click here for the fully formatted text.

A Most Potent Brew
A Level 1 Adventure
Play Tavern Ambiance
As you all enjoy a pint of ale with your new found companions, you realize that none of you have properly introduced yourselves just yet.
Why don’t you each describe your characters
Perception Check (Highest Roll)
As you finish up chatting, you see the Bartender head over to the notice board and nail in a new flier
Upon taking a closer look at the flier, it reads: In need of those well-trained with a weapon to exterminate exceedingly large vermin, speak with Glowkindle at the Wizards’ Tower Brewery. 100gp reward (25gp per party member)
If players ask for directions
Persuasion Check DC 10
Advantage if they offer a drink
The Wizards Tower Brewery, oh that’s simple it’s a couple of miles out of town, just follow the dirt road and you’ll pass right by it.
Play Travel Ambiance
You follow the directions you’ve been given, trudging maybe a mile or two out of town along an old dirt road that winds its way up a low hill. As you near the top, a large stone building comes into view, flanked by a couple of barns. By the door is a brightly painted sign that reads ‘The Wizard’s Tower Brewing Co. For the Freshest Pint in the Realm!’
If Players walk right in (Play Alternate Tavern Ambiance)
You enter a building infused with the smell of hops and beer. It’s extremely clean and well-organized. A few humans and Halflings, dressed in white shirts and tight black trousers held up with green suspenders wander about, checking on barrels and vats of bubbling liquid with no sense of urgency.
A fairly young looking Gnome, who sports an impressive beard looks over to you.
GlowKindle: Yes, yes how may I help you? We’re not currently running tours right now.
After a moment of confusion you can see his face turn to a smile.
All those weapons are quite lovely, you don’t happen to be adventurers who saw my job posting do you?
Perfect! Well my name is Glowkindle, why don’t you come in and join me for a drink and I’ll explain everything!
If Players knock
As you knock on the door and wait a few moments, it’s eventually answered by a fairly young looking Gnome, who sports an impressive beard, as well as a white shirt and tight black trousers held up with green suspenders.
GlowKindle: Yes, yes how may I help you? We’re not currently running tours right now.
After a moment of confusion you can see his face turn to a smile.
All those weapons are quite lovely, you don’t happen to be adventurers who saw my job posting do you?
As you follow Glowkindle, you enter a building infused with the smell of hops and beer. It’s extremely clean and well-organized. A few humans and Halflings, dressed much like their boss wander about, checking on barrels and vats of bubbling liquid with no sense of urgency.
(Play Alternate Tavern Ambiance)
You continue your way to a small bar set up in the corner of the brewery where he offers you all a seat and begins to pour drinks for each of you
This is our Tashalar Pale Ale, it’s a nice hoppy summer ale. I hope you enjoy it.
Now onto business. I suppose I should start when this all began. We’ve been doing fairly well for ourselves and were looking to expand our operations. In order to do this, we first needed to expand their beer cellar.
We had some workmen down there, digging out some extra room, when they uncovered an old wall. As far as we could tell it may have been a remnant of some long-forgotten ruin.
Curious, we knocked a hole in the wall, only to be attacked by black rats the size of dogs! Big dogs too, not poodles, you know? Which emerged from the darkness on the other side.
We all managed to escape with nothing worse than a few cuts and bruises, but the cellars are completely unusable. If we have any hope of getting production starting again, we need the giant rat infestation dealt with.
Now that’s where you all come in. I’m not sure where the rats came from, but the brewery took its name from the old Wizard’s Tower that used to be on the site, so it may be something to do with that.
If you find out where they came from, take care of the infestation and make sure we won’t have any surprises like this in the future, I’d be willing to pay each of you 25gp
Players agree
I can’t thank you enough, follow me to the cellars.
Glowkindle leads you to a hatch in the floor of the main brewing area. Lifts it up and peers into the darkness below.
Play Dungeon Ambiance
Beer Cellar
The wooden stairs creak as you descend into the cool, dry air of the cellar, which is infused with the smell of beer and damp fur. Somewhere in the darkness you hear the scrabbling sound of claws on floorboards and a faint squeaking noise.
If players have darkvision or shine light
It’s difficult to make out the entire area at once, the floor is taken up by barrels and casks of beer. The only clear area is towards the far side of the cellar, which has a dirt floor littered with stones and workman’s tools.
You’re actually able to just make out make out the hole in the wall mentioned by Glowkindle as well
Enemies (Play Combat Music 1)
8 x Giant Rats
DC 10 Perception to spot or surprise round
After 5 die the rest will flee
As you tear down yet another vermin, you watch as the rest flee in fear through the hole in the wall…only to be greeted with screeches of pain moments later, followed by complete silence.
Mosaic Corridor
Through the hole in the wall you can see a dusty stone corridor, its floor lying around a foot below that of the cellar where you stand. Over to the left you can see the start of a staircase buried in collapsed masonry, earth and rubble that block the way completely. To the right the passage heads around a corner, but on the wall you can just make out what appears to be writing in a clear gold script.
When player asks about writing
As you make your way to the gold script you can see that the passageway continues to the left and ends with two doorways, one heading left and the other straight on. In front of you is a 20 ft. section of floor covered in a mosaic that depicts a rural scene. It shows the sun, the sky, a hillside, and a river. Each showing the scene at a different time of day. You also notice that two halves of a Giant Rat seemingly cut by a giant blade lie on the river section of the second panel.
The writing on the wall is engraved in a golden script that appears to be shining slightly, even in complete darkness. It’s written in Common and reads:
"Dawn breaks with stirring air, As sun shines down on new day fair
Answer = Air (Sky)
"Midday blaze bakes earth and grass, The farmer waits for heat to pass
Answer = Earth (Hill)
"Evening cool brings water, wine, Drink and laughter passing time
Answer = Water (River)
"Night sees shining, roaring fire, as wood and coals burn on the pyre"
Answer = Fire (Fire)
Players must stand on correct portion of each tile in order to not activate trap
DC 12 Dex Save or
1d10 Slashing damage
Activates each time player steps on wrong panel
Well Room
In the center of the small room ahead of you is a large stone well, topped with a wooden handle and the rotten remnants of a heavily frayed rope that descends into the shaft. In the far right corner, the ceiling has collapsed slightly, and a narrow shaft of weak sunlight shines through a narrow hole. To the far left is a plain wooden table, crusted with dirt and dust and laden with old plates, buckets and other strange pieces of tableware.
DC 12 Perception
You’re able to find that several of the old plates on the tables are made from tarnished silver.
Set of Silver plates – 50gp
If Players aren’t stealthing
3 x Giant Centipedes (Play Combat Music 2)
As you make your way through the room looking about, you begin to hear a scuttling sound from inside the well. In a flash the wood covering the well shatters. The first thing you see is antennas moving frantically from side to side, followed by a massive pincer-like mouth. As it exits you count 2, 4, 6, 10, 20, 50, 100 plus legs skittering all about, excitedly looking for its next meal and these 3 giant centipedes are quite sure they’ve found it.
Will attempt to knock player unconscious and drag them into the well
Well is 50ft deep, with 10ft of water that will break fall
The Lab
The door opens onto what might once have been a lab or workroom. To your left sits a moldering desk and the shattered remnants of alchemical glassware, while the center of the room is dominated by a set of tall bookcases arranged back-to-back. All around, however, are scorch marks and signs of countless small fires. The air is filled with the smell of smoke and burned meat. The wooden furniture is blackened and burned in places, while what may once have been a pile of books has been reduced to ash. Singed traces of what may be webbing hang from the ceiling. As you enter you feel something crunch beneath your feet - glancing down, you realize that it’s the charred hindquarters of a Giant Rat.
1 x Giant Inferno Spider(Adv on Stealth vs player perception) (Play Boss Music)
As you peer around attempting to find what could have caused all this damage, you begin to hear a scuttling sound just above you. You feel something drip on you and burn your skin. You look up to see what and as you do the entirety of the ceiling begins to glow, no…not the ceiling, the creature itself. What appears to be magma like blood courses through its veins of this 8 legged abomination that’s latched onto the ceiling. The tip of its abdomen glows brighter and brighter as it releases an onslaught of burning webs at you.
Roll for initiative
As you lay your final blow into this creature it lets out a screeching hiss, you’re unsure if it comes from the creature's pain or the steam escaping its body. Its legs slowly curl in on itself and all that’s left is the lifeless carcass of this mutated arachnid.
DC 12 Perception Check
Taking a look around you can see that most of the books and equipment are charred and falling apart rendering them completely unusable. However; there is one thing that stands out. A single book atop the bookshelf appears to be completely undamaged.
Spellbook
Contains: Detect Magic, Identify, and Arcane Lock
Storeroom
The rear wall of this small room is lined with sturdy-looking wooden shelves. Clearly these were once laden with bottles and glass vials, but over the years many of these have been reduced to glittering shards of glass on the floor. There’s a flicker of movement among the wreckage and you see a small black rat lapping up the last remnants of liquid left in the shattered remains of a dark blue bottle.
Perception check
Taking a closer look at the broken bottle that the rat is drinking from you notice that it has the torn remains of a white label affixed to it. The writing on it reads ‘-tion of enlargement’.
After one minute rat will turn into a Giant Rat and attack
Giant Rat x 1 (Play Battle Music 4)
You’re also able to find another smashed and empty bottle on the floor with a partial label reading ‘Essence of Fire Ele-’.
Lastly upon looking at the shelves you notice that a few bottles are still fully intact. There’s 3 bottles, each with different colors. One Red, One a clear liquid and finally one containing a greenish liquid.
Potion of Healing
Potion of Invisibility
Potion of Vitality
As you make your way back, following the reverse order on the mosaic tile trap and finally reaching the exit to the cellar, you see the bearded gnome pacing back and forth anxiously. Upon seeing your faces, his eyes immediately light up!
Play Tavern Ambiance
You’ve made it back I see, I heard so much noise down there. I’m so glad you’re all in one piece! Please, please, tell me what you found out. Here follow me I’ll have one of my workers grab us another round of drinks!
Questions he’ll ask if players take a while to recount things or are unsure what to say.
Were you able to clear out all of the vermin?
Do you have any idea what made them so large
Where did the tunnel lead you all?
Thank you all so much for your help, this is truly a day to celebrate! Not only is the cellar cleared, but there’s entire rooms that can be dedicated to storage down there. We’ll be able to expand and become the largest brewery on the Sword Coast!
As promised, here's your reward of 25gp each, I added a little bit extra for your trouble (35gp ea). Also any time you have the urge to wet your whistle feel free to drop on by. With what you were able to accomplish here today, I can tell you have a bright future as adventurers and I’d love to hear those stories!
With your first successful adventure, you all exit the brewery, excited for all that the future may hold. Will you continue on together and make a name for yourselves or was the constant threat of death, dismemberment and nearly being eaten a bit too much for some of you. Only time will tell, but those stories are for another time. For now you head back home a tad bit richer, slightly worse for wear, but with an experience you’ll never forget.
And that is where we’ll end tonight’s session!
Special Thanks
NihilVerum322X
Tim
James
And to all my Patrons!
Without your support, none of this would be possible! Thank you so much!!!

2023.05.29 20:57 toptrool abortion advocates often don't believe the science, but do they believe abortionists?

the science provides us with an unequivocal answer as to when a new human being comes into existence: at conception (see several embryology textbooks, some which are quoted here and here is another convenient list of quotations from over 100 scientific references for one to peruse).
and yes, there is a scientific consensus on when life of a human being begins.
Biologists from 1,058 academic institutions around the world assessed survey items on when a human's life begins and, overall, 96% (5337 out of 5577) affirmed the fertilization view.
abortion advocates often reject one or two biological realities that 1) a pregnant woman is carrying another human being, and 2) abortion kills a human being. they often reject these realities due to ad hoc rationalizations used to defend abortion; however some of them do so simply out of ignorance. the latter group can be persuaded by presenting biological facts. however the former group that engages in ad hoc rationalizations will continue to make (often irrational) arguments as to why it's not really a human or it's not really killing.
if they still do not believe the science, perhaps they will believe abortion providers?
here are some notable quotes from several abortion providers that admit to killing.
late-term abortionist leroy carhart (of the infamous partial-birth abortion ban court case):
Carhart: The baby has no input in this as far as I'm concerned.
Andersson: But it’s interesting that you use the word baby because a lot of abortionists won’t use that. They’ll use the term fetus because they don’t want to acknowledge that there’s a life.
Carhart: I think that it is a baby and I use [the term] with the patients
Andersson: And you don’t have a problem with killing a baby?
Carhart: I have no problem if it’s in the mother’s uterus.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00071k9
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywOPuwIkWXE
late-term abortionist warren hern, on the advent of a gruesome, dismemberment abortion method:
We have reached a point in this particular technology where there is no possibility of denial of an act of destruction on the part of the operator. It is before one's eyes. The sensations of dismemberment flow through the forceps like an electric current.
https://www.drhern.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/staff-reaction-de.pdf
abortionist curtis boyd:
Am I killing? Yes. I know that.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfWB7tcAdhw
ron fitzsimmons, abortionist and founder of national coalition of abortion providers:
One of the facts of abortion, he said, is that women enter abortion clinics to kill their fetuses. ''It is a form of killing,'' he said. ''You're ending a life.''
https://www.nytimes.com/1997/02/26/us/an-abortion-rights-advocate-says-he-lied-about-procedure.html
abortionist lisa harris:
I do think about the moral complexities of abortion. I know that for every woman whose abortion I perform, I stop a developing human from being born.
[. . .]
I know that for each of them, there was a second entity there — a baby, a person, a potential life, a life, depending on your beliefs
[. . .]
Abortion feels morally complicated because it stops a developing human from being born, which of course it does.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/22/opinion/abortion-clinic-doctor.html
bernard nathanson, former abortionist and founder of the abortion advocacy group naral:
Some time ago -- after a tenure of a year and a half -- I resigned as director of the Center for Reproductive and Sexual Health. The Center had performed 60,000 abortions with no maternal deaths -- an outstanding record of which we are proud. However, I am deeply troubled by my own increasing certainty that I had in fact presided over 60,000 deaths.
There is no longer serious doubt in my mind that human life exists within the womb from the very onset of pregnancy...
We must courageously face the fact -- finally -- that human life of a special order is being taken. And since the vast majority of pregnancies are carried successfully to term, abortion must be seen as the interruption of a process that would otherwise have produced a citizen of the world. Denial of this reality is the crassest kind of moral evasiveness.
https://www.nejm.org/doi/pdf/10.1056/NEJM197411282912213
anne furedi, ceo of u.k.'s largest abortion business:
I think the point is not whether we give it value or not, but how much value do we give it. We can accept that the embryo is a living thing in the fact that it has a beating heart, that it has its own genetic system within it. It’s clearly human in the sense that it’s not a gerbil, and we can recognize that it is human life of a sort. But the point is not when human life begins, but when does it really begin to matter.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLJK88QObrI&t=340s
former medical director of planned parenthood mary calderone:
I ask you not to assume that I am indiscriminately for abortion. Believe me, I am not. Aside from the fact that abortion is the taking of a life, I am also mindful of what was brought out by our psychiatrists – that in almost every case, abortion, whether legal or illegal, is a traumatic experience that may have severe consequences later on.

anonymous abortionist:
I have the utmost respect for life; I appreciate that life starts early in the womb, but also believe that I'm ending it for good reasons. Often I'm saving the woman, or I'm improving the lives of the other children in the family. I also believe that women have a life they have to consider. If a woman is working full-time, has one child already, and is barely getting by, having another child that would financially push her to go on public assistance is going to lessen the quality of her life. And it's also an issue for the child, if it would not have had a good life. Life's hard enough when you're wanted and everything's prepared for. So yes, I end life, but even when it's hard, it's for a good reason.
https://www.bostonmagazine.com/2006/05/15/confessions-of-an-abortion-docto
abortionist william rashbaum:
“I think it’s apt – destruction of life. I’ll be frank. I began to do abortions in large numbers at the time of my divorce when I needed money. But I also believe in the woman’s right to control their biological destiny. I spent a lot of years learning to deliver babies. Sure, it sometimes hurts to end life instead of bringing it into the world.”
Norma Rosen, “Between Guilt and Gratification: Abortion Doctors Reveal Their Feelings,” New York Times Magazine, April 17, 1977 p 73-74; 78.
abortionist bertran wainer:
“Abortion is killing. Nobody can argue with that. When the fetus is inside the uterus it is alive and when the pregnancy terminated it is dead – that by any definition is killing. … I think abortion is the destruction of something which is potentially irreplaceable, human and of great value, which is the tragedy of abortion.”
Miriam Claire, The Abortion Dilemma: Personal Views on a Public Issue (New York: Insight Books, 1995), 59.
planned parenthood pamphlet from 1952:
“An abortion requires an operation. It kills the life of a baby after it has begun. It is dangerous to your life and health. It may make you sterile so that when you want a child you cannot have it.”
https://www.liveaction.org/news/planned-parenthood-in-1952-abortion-kills-the-life-of-a-baby/
abortionist william sweeney:
“The [saline] solution is lethal. It kills the baby in the womb. Then the woman whose fetus is too large to abort by suction curette must go through labor and finally, 24 or 36 hours later, exhausted, she delivers a dead baby.”
Barbara Lang Stern, Woman’s Doctor: A Year in the Life of an Obstetrician-Gynecologist, (New York: Morrow & Company, 1973, p 207).
former planned parenthood president faye wattleton:
“I think we have deluded ourselves into believing that people don’t know that abortion is killing. So any pretense that abortion is not killing is a signal of our ambivalence, a signal that we cannot say yes, it kills a fetus.”
“Speaking Frankly,” Ms., May/June 1997, Volume VII, Number 6, 67.
there are numerous other quotes from abortionists who explain and acknowledge what really happens during abortions. one can find some of them at https://clinicquotes.com/.
abortion abolitionists who are clear-eyed about the realities of abortion should not hesitate to point out to abortion advocates that they're making arguments that even abortionists themselves reject.

2023.05.29 20:32 NightMachines Looking for a simple pen & paper campaign sci-fi RPG

I’m looking for a sci-fi RPG for the following situation. I’d like to play it digitally on my iPad using the Apple pencil, a PDF reader app (like Goodnotes) and a dice app. The system should be simple, without too many rules, but offer character or ship development, trading and quests. I’d like to be able to pick it up, play a quest and/or trade resources for an hour in between things and then put it away again, with a universe and “story” unfolding with each play.
I’ve looked a Ironsworn Starforged, but it’s a little too involved. I don’t want 200+ pages of rules, etc. Ideally, it would be something like a simple 4X (board)game, where I visit different sectors, planets, etc., fight some opponents on the way, trade and have some RPG elements with quests, maybe even like a “choose your own adventure” book mechanic.
I feel like I’m looking for something that can’t really exist: simple, but complex with a story :D … So maybe I have to be a little more flexible. The main thing I’d like is the campaign/legacy aspect I think, so not just short on-off plays, but a universe to discover.

2023.05.29 19:52 TheSnuppy Question about PDF

I recently bought the Zona Alfa rules PDF and did this because I saw on youtube there were a lot of tables and a character sheet at the end and thought it would be handy to make copies of those things vs the book which might be harder, however, it says the document has permissions that don't allow me to print any of it. I'd really like a physical copy of at least the character sheets and preferably the tables too so I don't have to constantly have the rules open once I learn them. Is there any way to make copies of these, preferably one that is legal?

2023.05.29 18:51 bnkc Coding Novice to CoFounder: My Full-Stack Startup Journey, Warts and All.

Who Am I? A Mathematics graduate from Ohio State, I didn't exactly set out with a CS degree. On the contrary, coding classes and I didn't quite gel back in college. However, in my senior year, searching for data-centric roles led me down the Python path.
Months into exploring Python, a new-found love for coding started to kindle. Python was a breath of fresh air, lacking of complexities like pointers or garbage collection. My evenings transformed into coding marathons - writing scripts, traversing through GitHub, and growing my understanding of coding and its best practices.
Fast-forward six months, my first ever app, "Morning Bot", saw the light of day. It wasn't perfect; it even fetched the wrong weather updates. But the thrill of creating and my family's support overshadowed its flaws.
The Big Breakthrough "HandleFinder" was my next leap of faith, allowing users to validate usernames across hundreds of social networks. Developing a full-stack app had a steep learning curve, but it was worth it. The app might not have been an aesthetic marvel, but it worked, and that mattered the most. A little marketing, and to my surprise, it went viral. Within 7 months, HandleFinder attracted 55k unique visitors, media attention, and consistent daily usage.
Coding started to rule my world. A year later, teaming up with a Python wizard, we began pushing the envelope. He was leagues ahead of me in skills, but I didn't care. I was just buzzing about being on the learning wave.
ChatGPT and The Future ChatGPT's explosive growth unlocked a plethora of business opportunities. We saw potential in linking specific references within ChatGPT, especially when it came to extensive PDF documents. Imagine if you could not only ask about complex documents but also fact-check your answers based on document references. This could have massive implications for academics, research, law, and more.
At Three Sigma, where I worked as an unofficial intern, I acquired skills I couldn't have fathomed a year ago. Docker, Celery, full CRUD apps, OCR - it was like drinking from a firehose. I'll openly admit, I've crashed our production environment multiple times and deleted crucial tables, but in six months, I played a part in building a POC, assessing interest, dabbling in marketing, aiding in MVP creation, and launching a product.
Our app, fine-tuned over time, stands as the most accurate document Q&A tool in the market. As we keep refining, the user base continues to expand.
Closing Thoughts When I embarked on this journey, I didn't have a plan. Coding intrigued me, I loved building things, and that was it. The future is still uncertain, but this much is clear: developing software sparks joy in me like nothing else. Creating something from scratch has proven to be both an incredibly rewarding experience and a highly effective learning method.
If you made it this far, thanks for following my journey, and feel free to ask me anything. I'm an open book. You're always welcome to explore my projects as well:

2023.05.29 17:22 Extremejay2 Winter of Atom questions

To those that already have the pdf from pre ordering I had a few questions based on the orginal info that came out about what would be in the book.
The 2 things that I was really interested in was the preview stated that there would be settlement building rules and rules for large scale combat ( not sure if they meant armies against armies or smaller scale but larger than 10-20 npcs and pcs)
Did these make it in? Are they comprehensive or just a one or 2 page thing like some of the rules additions that were in the GM toolkit.
I don't really care about having a huge campaign to play in as there are no children of atom in my game. I am just looking for good additions to the core game . I don't want to spend another 50 bucks on a book that is an adventure for 85 percent of the book.

2023.05.29 14:24 VercioKing *CONTAINS AEW SPOILERS* Post a Forbidden Door 2023 card you would love to see

Okay, so it's fantasy booking time. We're on that time of the year again, where our imaginations travel and injuries hit. In the meantime, since we're almost in time for Dominion and AEW's major stories will be on hold for a while I thought of interrogating this reddit for having an idea of your Forbidden Door 2 card.
There's no rule in it: you can book MJF losing to Bolting Oleg if you want. The only thing is, try to explain it and to give it a sense, so it gets funnier than the average "oh, I want Okada vs Omega V because Meltzer is going to give it 8 stars and three quarters".

Pay attention, from here I will assume all the readers know it's spoiler territory, so PLEASE, DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER UNLESS YOU ALREADY WATCHED AEW DOUBLE OR NOTHING 2023 OR YOU DO CARE ABOUT BEING SPOILER-FREE ALL ELITE WRESTLING

Let's begin!
Opening Match: AEW World Championship - Maxwell Jacob Friedman (champion) vs "The King" Minoru Suzuki (challenger)
So, an AEW World Title match as an opener? You see, the thing I love the most about MJF is not the character, nor the wrestling abilities. It's his persona and the modernity he brings that makes me love the man. In his Media Scrum interview, he stated "NJPW is an indy". His persona clearly does not want to do the PPV, and so I want to give him someone who, since Inoki's death, is in 本体 (Hontai, NJPW Main Unit). And what a better way for the Toronto crowd to get in the mood, than give them singing 風になれ (kazeninare) for starters? Suzuki can work for 15-20 minutes once in a while now, however, I want this to be a 5 minutes thing where Max cheats his way to the win.

2nd match: CHAOS (BISHAMON, Rocky Romero and Orange Cassidy) vs. BULLET CLUB (David Finlay, Clark Connors, KENTA & Chase Owens)
During the pandemic era, we had OC and Best Friends introduced in CHAOS by Rocky Romero. And with Shibata seamingly leaving LA Dojo and CC beating Young Lions and LA Dojo alumnis all around, there are two interesting matchups for this shakeup: azucar and 100 Proof, but most importantly Finlay and OC. They are both establishing themselves as fighters, but with two different attitudes. Having an exchange there would be incredible. At the end, BISHAMON win with Chase looking at the light.

3rd match: Champion vs Champion - Willow Nightingale (NJPW Strong Women's Champion) vs Toni Storm (AEW World's Women Champion)
The King of Sports introduced two female's titles among their collection. Given the fact STARDOM exists, given the fact for now I do not see a merger between the BUSHIROAD promotions, I also do not see Gedo wanting to give up on the idea that this is a NJPW only event. So, to me these titles are for US territory and for Special matches involving megastars during special events. I do not necessarily agree with this, but also the G1 Climax and the IWGP Heavweight titles were "special attractions". When it comes to this match, with Jamie in the box for a while, this is going to be another piece of the Outcasts vs. Homegrowns feud. Toni would win, setting up for another match for the STRONG title somewhere in the future.

4th match: Owen Hart Cup Finals - "Super Liger" Chris Jericho vs Hiromu Takahashi
Ok, when I thought of this match I said to myself that Y2J has to be in because he's one of the main pieces of the AEW puzzle, so I really do not see special events without him. So I booked a filler, something to get rid in case something cooler pops into my mind. Then I remembered Forbidden Door 2 is going to take place in Canada, so this became a must. Then I read Tony's idea to have Liger's involvement in the Cup. So this, from being an afterthought, has become a priority. Since AEW started, Jericho portrayed all his persona: he did the list, Lionheart, the Painmaker, the Ocho. How cool would it be to see Hiromu, who is beating all Liger's records, surpassing Super Liger?

5th match: IWGP World Heavyweight Championship - SANADA (champion) vs Darby Allin (challenger)
I will start by saying that I'm not that confident that we'll see this match happening. If Yota Tsugi is half as good as the guy I've see in RevPro, we have the reincarnation of Kenta Kobashi (I know, it's very tempting to rage at this, but their physical structure seems identical). So I want to be wrong. But picture this: SANADA's defenses are against a junior (although he's an iconic junior) and a graduating Young Lion. So somehow we have to establish him as a force, or we're having another transitional champion that is going to get racked by Okada for the next Wrestle Kingdom.
Let's take a step back and have a gemba walk on wrestling in 2023. To me, it has been the best year in wrestling in YEARS. We had NJPWxNOAH, All Together, two edition of All Star Juniors, Multiverse United, an awesome Wrestlemania Weekend for the US indies (I heard good things about WWE, but I don't watch it since more than a decade). We had Nakamura going back to Japan and Naito retiring Mutoh. You see where I'm going with this?
With Sting retiring and Muta gone I would love to see this match, with them seconding their guys. At the end, Darby takes the L with some MJF thing happening (now more than ever I'm convinced that Darby is dethroning Maxwell somewhere in the future).

6th match: NJPW STRONG Television Championship - Zack Sabre Jr. (champion) vs "The American Dragon" Bryan Danielson Wheeler Yuta (challenger)
As an Italian from Naples, all I know is that when it comes to superstition, neapolitans are only second to the Chinese. So read the name you want, I'm not going to name Daniel Bryan in in this match. Let's say THE Forbidden Door dream match becomes a meme and we see Yuta trying to survive 15 minutes with Zack in the ring. Then, if the name in the strikesthrough is the correct one...

7th match: IWGP Women's Championship - Mayu Iwatani (champion) vs Dr. Britt Baker, DMD (challenger)
Dream match #7. I'm going to be hermetic with this. In my mind, this is the shocker of the night, with Britt Baker winning and holding "hostage" of the title in America and setting up Giulia vs Britt at WK next year. WOW.

8th match: NEVER Six Men Openweight Championship - Blackpool Combat Club (champions) & Shota Umino vs The Elite (El Phantasmo and The Young Bucks) (challengers)
Last year's FD saw great matches with an interesting card. We will never see it, but we expected the emancipation of Hiku Leo in his match with the BULLET CLUB. We received another match, with ELP "replacing" spiritually Kenny Omega. ELP and the Bucks have an almost unexplicable chemistry. ELP is half Marty Scurll, half Kenny Omega, and fits perfectly to the mold of a tag team who is as over the top as ELP is and can do comedy wrestling as well as fast-pacing action or storyline-driven wrestling.
While I was writing it, I changed the champions. Why? Because Kenny said he has one or two friends to call up for support. One is Ibushi, and we'll seeing him at Blood and Guts. The other is none other than ELP.
At first, this was suppose to have the current ones (Okada, Tanahashi and Ishii) in the match and something else planned for Mox. In my head booking, I would have had Tanahashi winning on NJPW STRONG Resurgence but that derailed. Anyways, BCC and Shota retains here, setting up El Phantasmo vs Shooter for G1.
Blackpool retains.

9th match: AEW World Tag Team, NJPW STRONG Tag Team & IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships - WINNER TAKES ALL - BULLET CLUB Gold (Juice Robinson & Jay White) vs House of Torture
I am spending a few words here. We're setting up FTR vs. Juice/Jay in AEW. So, say goodbye to Aussie Open vs FTR 2 in NJPW. Hello, Bullet Club Civil War. We've been waiting one since Tama Tonga said "Who the f\ck is the Elite. huh?*" to Kenny and I guess time and place coincide now. It's time to have Jay winning everything, then having a megabrawl among all the members of BC.

10th match: Kazuchika Okada vs Hiroshi Tanahashi
Semi main-event. D*ckhead Okada does not care about Forbidden Door nor AEW. He just cares about being the best wrestler of all times and pushing wrestling to the next level. He did it by creating a gimmick-match only title, he did it by saying he wanted to be the Six Men Titles to be like a World Cup, failing again. At the change of the guard, Okada says to Tanahashi that it's time for a change. After the fall between Ishii and Tanahashi at Dominion, Okada says this is make it or break it for CHAOS. If he wins, Tanahashi must join CHAOS. If Okada loses, CHAOS must disband.

Main Event: IWGP United States Heavyweight Championship - Kenny Omega (champion) vs Will Ospreay (challenger)
Out of all the matches I do not want to happen, this is at the top of my list. I want Archer to win, my entire plans to change, keeping this dream that started a WK17 as long as I can. It is probably because my dad got diagnosed with cancer and I want stability in my life. I do not want things to end.
However, Kenny never had an "high rate" match in his home turf and it is time time for one. So LFG! Winner? Us.

This concludes my silly stream of consciousness, I hope you had fun reading this! What is your dream card for the most speculated PPV of the year?

2023.05.29 14:01 spunchy M&B 2023 Lecture 4: The Money View, Micro and Macro

M&B 2023 Lecture 4: The Money View, Micro and Macro
For our schedule and links to other discussions, see the Money and Banking 2023 master post.
This is the discussion thread for Economics of Money and Banking Lecture 4: The Money View, Micro and Macro.
The settlement (survival) constraint says you have to meet your cash commitments as they come due. This lecture explores the settlement constraint from multiple perspectives.
We can disaggregate assets into time patterns of future cash inflows, and liabilities into time patterns of future cash outflows (commitments). If your cash inflows are insufficient to cover your cash commitments at any given moment, then the settlement constraint binds, and you're dead.
The settlement constraint can be relaxed from above but not below. The payment system is a credit system. By relaxing our settlement constraint, economic units (agents) above us in the hierarchy can allow us to expand credit to make otherwise-impossible payments.
Mehrling introduces the "sources and uses" notation, an analytical tool that helps us match up cash flows with different liquidity categories: monetary, funding, and market.
This Lecture connects with Hyman Minsky's cashflow-oriented view of the economy, which we will discuss on Wednesday.
Note: The link to the Fed release in the lecture notes doesn't work anymore. Here's the latest version (Fourth Quarter 2022). The sources and uses matrices are on pages 1 and 2 (color-coded red).

Part 1: FT: Dealer of Last Resort

When I heard the news of another round of quantitative easing in the US last week, my first thought was that Mario Draghi should have done the same. Instead, the president of the European Central Bank opted for a conditional bond purchasing programme with an uncertain start date. In the meantime, the eurozone’s faltering economy needs a much more determined monetary stimulus, and it needs it right now.—QE would be right for Europe, too
The idea with dealer of last resort is that the central bank offers to buy an unlimited quantity of an asset at a particular price. This installs a floor below which the price cannot go—and hence a ceiling on the yield/interest rate. In the fall of 2012, the ECB is announcing its Outright Monetary Transactions (OMT) program, which offers to buy the sovereign debt of European member countries that need help—possibly Italy and Spain.
This is the "monetizing government debt" operation we've seen before.
https://preview.redd.it/prt8l004ws2b1.png?width=714&format=png&auto=webp&s=d2ddcd4b04bd5a679f2fd22b3a7c88564e770dc6
The problem with the OMT program is that it only backstops sovereign debt if the countries ask for it and if they agree to certain conditions. But it can be problematic to ask for help. So the question is whether the OMT will have its desired effect if it never gets used/activated. Nearly nine years later, I think the answer is: partly.
Although the announcement of the program did help drive down interest rates, as far as I can tell the ECB has still never actually done any OMT purchases. Here's a Bloomberg article from 2020.
As of last year, Mario Draghi is now Prime Minister of Italy.

Part 2: Reading: Hyman Minsky

As we'll see in the reading next week, Minsky thought about the economy in terms of cashflows. His financial instability hypothesis was based on the idea that the financial sector becomes more brittle as it becomes more difficult for everyone to line up their cash inflows with their commitments—the "survival constraint" binds more tightly.
This can all happen without anyone becoming insolvent at any time.

Part 3: Payments: Money and Credit

In a "pure money" system, nobody ever borrows from each other. People make payments only by passing back and forth money assets. Whether that money is represented as physical coins/tokens/notes or merely as entries on a balance sheet, it's something that the people spending the money can't create more of.
https://preview.redd.it/2c18yui6ws2b1.png?width=655&format=png&auto=webp&s=2e586f87ce8ed375c21615ffaecd38e3eb5321fb
Such a system is, of course, impossible. People will always find ways to borrow from each other to introduce elasticity.
On the other end of the spectrum is a "pure credit" system:
https://preview.redd.it/fatx72q8ws2b1.png?width=716&format=png&auto=webp&s=91f4d751a4716b82b1b339d49c72bcc112b067d0
The above balance sheet shows payment by issuance. This creates a new IOU from the buyer to the seller of the goods. This expands credit in the economy.
There's also payment by set-off where the buyer crosses off a debt owed to him by the seller. This contracts credit.
https://preview.redd.it/biuna09bws2b1.png?width=739&format=png&auto=webp&s=e014786b164f28cba54cd5c3e70f5932a261f77a
And, for completeness, we can imagine the buyer taking on a liability that was previously owed by the seller. Credit neither expands nor contracts. This is payment by novation.

In the credit payment system, the quantity of outstanding credit increases and decreases as payments are made. That means the quantity of assets—and liabilities—expands and contracts. In the real world, there's both money and credit. Holding a buffer of money reserves allows us to make payments without lining them up perfectly against cash inflows.
Money is credit that's issued above you in the money-credit hierarchy. Banks, who sit above you in the hierarchy, create elasticity by swapping their liabilities for your liabilities. What's money to you (bank deposits) is a form of credit from the perspective of the banking system.
https://preview.redd.it/gxppa00hws2b1.png?width=811&format=png&auto=webp&s=8aaebbad8b15e10a0c6553c7cf357c647acd0c14
Notice that by using a bank as an intermediary, the overall payment system still behaves as a credit system. You pay using something that looks like money to you, but the bank created that money as credit.
On his BU site, Perry links to two helpful YouTube videos by the Bank of England:
The first video explains that money is a special form of generally acceptable IOU. In today's world, instead of being directly redeemable for something like gold, the central bank does other things to ensure the integrity of the monetary standard and to manage the stability (or instability) of the credit superstructure that rests on top of it.
The second video discusses "endogenous" money creation, narrow money versus broad money (hierarchy), and the effects of quantitative easing. Even for the "narrow money" issued by the central bank, they don't get to choose how much of it they issue. It has to endogenously adjust based on what's necessary for stable monetary conditions.

Part 4: Payments: Discipline and Elasticity

In our first example, the discipline came from the limited quantity of money—when either side ran out of money, they could no longer buy and trade stopped. In the second example, the discipline comes from the bilateral credit limit. In the third example the discipline comes from the credit limit and terms imposed by the bank on each borrower, and the elasticity comes from the willingness of the bank to swap its own IOU (which is money) for IOUs farther down the hierarchy (which are credit).—Lecture Notes
Banks can impose discipline from above by refusing to expand their credit, which is your money.
We can imagine credit limits as representing balance sheets' capacity to expand. And that capacity can bounce around depending on how much people trust each other, how much they trust financial conditions, and the capacity/willingness of lenders to expand credit.

Part 5: The Survival Constraint

To analyze the flow of money, we can think of all "economic units" (people, firms, governments, etc.) as banks. Everybody is a "money-flow" operation. Everybody faces a survival (liquidity/reserve/settlement) constraint.
To analyze how financial commitments affect the economy it is necessary to look at economic units in terms of their cash flows. The cash-flow approach looks at all units—be they households, corporations, state and municipal governments, or even national governments—as if they were banks.(Minsky 1986, p. 198)
For an economic agent to remain functional, it must be able to meet its cash commitments as they come due. If you can't make a promised payment, you're in trouble. In terms of day-to-day operations, you don't necessarily have to be solvent (assets > liabilities). You just have to be liquid enough to make your promised payments. You can continue doing business for a long time, even if you're insolvent. But not if you're illiquid.
"Liquidity kills you quick."—Perry Mehrling

Part 6: Sources and Uses Accounts

A key feature of the sources and uses framework is that it allows us to categorize cash flows. Different categories of sources and uses have different properties and represent different constraints. Mehrling breaks sources and uses into four categories: Goods, Financial Assets, Financial Debts, and Money.
Each category's source corresponds to a type of liquidity.
  • Goods: Expenditure/Receipt — Market Liquidity
  • Assets: Accumulate/Liquidate — Market Liquidity
  • Debts: Repay/Borrow — Funding Liquidity
  • Money: Hoard/Dishoard — Monetary Liquidity
Consistent with Mehrling's recent usage, I have replaced "decumulate" with "liquidate." For conciseness, I've shortened "Financial Assets" to "Assets" and "Financial Debts" to "Debts." Goods and money are also assets on the balance sheet, of course.
Dishoarding is the only source that requires no counterparty. Separating out assets and liabilities emphasizes that agents manage their gross liabilities, not just their net debts. Each and every cash commitment needs to be fulfilled.
The sources and uses accounts represent payment flows, whereas the balance sheets we're used to represent stocks. Sources and uses can be translated into balance sheet changes.
  • Rule 1: For each agent, every use has a corresponding source, and vice versa.
  • Rule 2: Every agent's use is some other agent's source, and vice versa.
The first rule is just about keeping track of where the money goes when you receive it (or where it comes from when you spend it). The second rule ties every agent in the economy together.
We put the goods and services "above the line." The other three categories of sources and uses are below-the-line financial accounts. What's possible above the line (goods and services) is determined by what happens below the line (financial). This MOOC focuses mostly on what's below the line.
We don't revisit sources and uses much in later lectures, but have a look at this blog post by Daniel Neilson for more intuition on sources and uses.

Part 7: Payment Example: Money and Credit

In this part, we use sources and uses to compare a cash payment to a credit card payment. I've also translated the examples into balance sheets, so we can see how the two notations map onto each other. We can use the Clavero color-coding convention for both.
Here's the simpler cash payment:
https://preview.redd.it/v9d72ofkws2b1.png?width=596&format=png&auto=webp&s=fc398ecf09ca2ca37a39f64b4fcbb36d22b2e7dd
And here's the balance-sheet version:
https://preview.redd.it/yrb15w3mws2b1.png?width=538&format=png&auto=webp&s=1b7593822a91aefe82054e58bb040f7b4d258ddb
It's just an asset swap. Each party ends up with what the other party started with.
Here's the balance-sheet version of the credit card payment:
https://preview.redd.it/2y2auy6ows2b1.png?width=1013&format=png&auto=webp&s=b44b6d1cd3e51c1a6098b4c726bff585699712b3
And the sources-and-uses version:
https://preview.redd.it/k7do44vtws2b1.png?width=870&format=png&auto=webp&s=c37765f6a4d55b9dfdfcd3d7cf67a4b592797162
The two main parties (Perry and Vareli) ended up with what the other person started with. But more complicated stuff happened along the way.
I've also partitioned the balance into time periods starting from top to bottom. The sources and uses, on the other hand, are partitioned by their categories.
Notice that each issuance is paired up with its eventual set-off. This is possible because the credit expansion that facilitated the payment eventually contracted back down.
Several different credit-related transactions happen "below the line." These transactions don't directly buy goods and services, but they ultimately facilitate payments for goods and services that take place "above the line." Paying attention to what happens below the line can help us understand what happens above the line.
Mehrling's lecture notes further break down the Vareli credit card payment example into separate sources and uses diagrams for the three steps. We can do that here using our payment-type color coding.
First, Perry makes the credit payment to get the dinner.
https://preview.redd.it/x41b5dewws2b1.png?width=873&format=png&auto=webp&s=caa11606efa4564bbebea276650efd3c92a63ea6
The Goods line represents a "payment by assignment" of the dinner. The asset and debt lines together represent an "IOU swap."
Vareli settles with Mastercard at the end of the day—and the end of every day.
https://preview.redd.it/4t98iuzyws2b1.png?width=874&format=png&auto=webp&s=2926e8ddd974896a27ba6fb2d5e730d96f7bf70c
Perry settles with Mastercard at the end of the month—and the end of every month.
https://preview.redd.it/1nqu7r01xs2b1.png?width=873&format=png&auto=webp&s=7b139f125bfd9b65e1a23b9b5efaab1d46ea0ed4
Balance-sheet liabilities (financial debts) only ever represent a specific type of use: repayment. Liabilities represent time patterns of future cash commitments. You have promised to repay at various times in the future. You could also novate the asset to repay it sooner.
If you fail to match your previously committed use with a corresponding source, you've failed to meet your cash commitment with a cash flow. You've defaulted.
Financial assets represent a specific type of source: liquidation. The asset's time pattern of cash flows is a time pattern of liquidation. You could also sell the asset to liquidate it sooner.
Since we haven't seen novation on a sources and uses table, let's do that now. When a payment is made in the banking system, a portfolio transfer happens between banks. Here it is in sources and uses:
https://preview.redd.it/yv5vkod4xs2b1.png?width=845&format=png&auto=webp&s=977d1a7472ed7972fbbee91a5d1f0613d0e1a0ee
For Bank A, the dishoarding of reserves is the source of funds used to repay the deposits. Notice that there's no set-off happening here. The debt still exists. It's just been transferred to Bank B.
For Bank B, the borrowing of deposits is the source of funds, which are hoarded as reserves. Again, the borrowing doesn't happen through the issuance of new debt. It happens through acquiring deposit liabilities that Bank A previously held (novation).
We have yet to see hierarchy/alchemy in a sources and uses table, so let's do that now. Below is an example from Mehrling that's not in the lectures.
https://preview.redd.it/y74317jhxs2b1.png?width=593&format=png&auto=webp&s=29b5773f8d191159637a55f5234c249454ad8164
Notice that the bank is borrowing as its source of funds. The corresponding use of funds for the borrower is hoarding. Hierarchy is the only case when hoarding and dishoarding are not paired in rule #2. In this case, the bank is above the borrower.

Part 8: Flow of Funds Accounts

In NIPA accounts, the emphasis is on value added and employment, so we focus on final production. But used goods are also exchanged, and also financial assets. These exchanges are shunted off to one side by NIPA but are at the same level of analysis in FoF. Indeed, in FoF the sale of goods and the sale of assets are equivalent ways of achieving a source of funds.—Lecture Notes
In a way the Keynesian framework grows from the quantity theory, with C+I+G+X-M serving as a kind of disaggregation of MV, and Y serving as a specification of a subset of PT. Copeland wanted to go even farther but he did not win out. Actual macroeconomic debate was between Keynesians and monetarists, and FoF remained a specialty interest for those who wanted to track developments in the financial world (below the line).—Lecture Notes
If we pretend that the payment system is a "pure money" system, then an expansion of credit just looks like an increase in the velocity of the fixed amount of money.
The Flow of Funds accounts exhibit statistical discrepancies partly because it's impossible to record all financial promises, agreements, and expectations on balance sheets. And they were designed before financial innovations such as derivatives.
We can still conceptualize any of these things as being on an implicit balance sheet. But to the extent that we regulate what's on firms' explicit balance sheets, it can push financial arrangements off the explicit balance sheet.

Part 9: The Survival Constraint, Redux

The central concern from a banking perspective is not solvency but liquidity, i.e., the survival constraint. Are current cash inflows sufficient to cover current cash outflow commitments? If yes, then we satisfy the survival constraint.—Lecture Notes
Credit allows us to delay the settlement/survival/reserve constraint.
Of the sources of funds, only dishoarding is dependable during a crisis. If you have the money you can always dishoard it to make a payment. To sell an asset (or a good), or to borrow, you need a buyer or a lender. Market liquidity and funding liquidity require counterparties.

Part 10: Liquidity, Long and Short

The key to Minsky is the alignment of cashflows and commitments in time. The economy consists of a web of interconnected agents with patterns of cash inflow and patterns of cash commitments going out into the future. Liquidity constraints anticipated in the future have consequences for today.
Because banks borrow short and lend long, they're always potentially vulnerable to cashflow mismatches (i.e. liquidity problems). In Minsky's terminology, banks are never "hedge units." They can't be. They always have to worry about rolling over their funding.
Agents that are under liquidity stress (i.e. up against the survival constraint) have to borrow. In this case, borrowing has nothing to do with time preferences or information about the market. It's not a choice.

Part 11: Financial Fragility, Flows and Stocks

https://preview.redd.it/dmji06xkxs2b1.png?width=321&format=png&auto=webp&s=b703af6db92931be87e0d64223d21ef22a063f0a
We're used to balance sheets representing stocks of assets and liabilities. Flows represent changes in those assets and liabilities. Expected future flows tell us how the balance sheets are expected to change in the future.
Stocks represent residuals of past cashflows and promises of future cashflows. The balance between the pattern of cashflows and cash commitments is important for individuals, but also important for the economy as a whole.
Crisis shows up in the money-market rate of interest as agents under liquidity stress become desperate and bid up the price of liquidity.
Solvency problems can become liquidity problems and liquidity problems can become solvency problems.
For our purposes the question of solvency is interesting mainly as an outer bound on the credit limit facing each agent. Intuitively it makes sense that that credit limit will be somehow related to the net worth. Solvent agents have unused borrowing power on their balance sheets which they can potentially mobilize to make payments. Thus we can see how asset price fluctuations can cause fluctuations in borrowing power, which might have consequences for immediate liquidity. Solvency problems can easily become liquidity problems. —Lecture Notes

Chapter Summaries:
Chapter 18: Hedra Ka: Ashby and the crew of The Wayfarer arrive at Hedra Ka, a flurry of activity with ships of different species all around. Elsewhere, the different factions of the Toremi Ka meet and discuss the ‘intrusion’ of The Wayfarer. The crew gathers with other GC officials on a different ship. Most of the crew is mingling but Corbin and Ohan stayed about The Wayfarer. The crew discuss time off after the job and Kizzy invites Rosemary to her dads’ to stay. The Toremi enter which creeps everyone out. The Toremi are carrying guns which Rosemary identifies as guns her father sold. A Toremi named Toum overhears Rosemary talking with Chef about not interfering with the war of the Toremi. The Wayfarer is ready to make the punch, running smoother than ever. Ohan is degrading fast but they express thankfulness for their time on the crew. Suddenly, a Toremi ship fires on The Wayfarer, ripping a hole in the ship and causing it to begin to fall.
Chapter 19: Seven Hours: The crew frantically tries to stabilize The Wayfarer. Ohan tries to navigate but his hands fail him. Chef doses him with adrenaline to keep him going. Lovey can’t help but they manage to get things stable for now. They manage to escape the hole even with Ohan collapsing. Things seem alright, until Jenks frantically calls about Lovey. She is unresponsive.
Chapter 20: Hard Reset: Jenks patches into Lovey, even though he said he’d never do it because it’s dangerous. Lovey has memory damage and her diagnostic systems are fried. An individual named Pepper comes aboard The Wayfarer to help. Ashby remarks that their attack told the GC that something was wrong with Hedra Ka. A news story breaks about multiple attacks from Toremi ships on GC ships as well as an attack on an unarmed civilian ship. Parliament is holding meetings to sort it out and they want to talk to Ashby. Kizzy informs Ashby that Lovey is conscious but she cannot access the ship normally. She advises a hard reset which would stop Lovey’s ‘heart’ and try to reset it. She also might wake up as a different personality if Jenks messes with her code. She also might not remember them at all. Ashby wrestles with the decision of what to do about Lovey. Kizzy performs the hard reset. The AI wakes up and introduces themselves as Lovelace.
Chapter 21: Staying, Leaving: Ashby sits in his office when Rosemary comes in to inform Ashby that the Committee wants to speak to him in a tenday on Hagarem. Ashby is reluctant to leave the ship after the attack. Rosemary manages to convince Ashby to attend the meeting. Elsewhere on The Wayfarer, Corbin goes to talk with Ohan and inform him of what's going on. It’s going bad for the whole crew and Corbin injects Ohan with his cure. Ashby is pissed at him but Corbin knows he did the right thing. The AI known as Lovelace is piecing together what happened to her precious installation. She doesn’t remember the crew beyond their ID files but she knows something bad happened. Pepper comes to talk to Lovelace and tells her what’s going on. Pepper offers Lovelace Jenks’ body kit he ordered for Lovey and a chance to go with Pepper. Lovelace agrees to go with Pepper.
Chapter 22: The Committee: Ashby is at the Parliament which is a gathering of representatives of different species. The meeting begins with the leader apologizing to Ashby for the attack on the ship. Ashby confirms the Toremi didn’t contact or threaten them before the attack. They talk back and form for a bit and then end the meeting quickly which surprises Ashby who expresses his disappointment with the GC’s promised protection. Ashby is asked to leave as he has completed his report. Over news, the GC announces that they are dissolving the alliance with the Toremi Ka.
Chapter 23: All Said and Done (END)
Ashby receives a mail drop package as the crew of The Wayfarer is looking to get some new tech in order to take on level 3 jobs. The package is from Pei, saying she wants to spend some time on The Wayfarer with him. Kizzy and Jenks talk as Kizzy is making crochet hats with names on them. Jenks gives Kizzy a present of shrimp spice to experiment with. He’s thankful she talked to him after everything with Lovey. Kizzy calls Jenks her brother. Ashby and Chef eat bread and try out the new AI Tycho. Corbin comes in with Ohan, now Ohan the Solitary. Ohan wants to go to Arun as ‘it is the way of things.” Ohan wants to stay and eat with the crew, only having had nutrient paste before the cure. Chef is pleased and cannot wait to cook for him. Ashby invites Corbin to join as Corbin had meant to leave to work on algae as he wasn’t sure the captain forgave him for dosing Ohan against his will. Sissix takes Rosemary on her first space walk. She finally feels like she is home.

Named in dedication to four of the greatest technical wrestlers of all-time – Mr. Perfect, Kurt Angle, William Regal, and Bret Hart – tonight is as big as it ever gets for the Blitz brand as we embark on our first-ever edition of BTE's Blitz equivalent PPV! Much like those men, if you wish to be successful in Pure Rules, you must embody intelligence, grit, and a goal-driven mindset to reach the top, so keep that in mind as you immortalise your names into history on this INSANE 14-match card! Emanating from the Twickenham Stadium in London, England, home to the English National Rugby Team, 82,000 strong will be here to witness history in one of the biggest crowds in FBE’s history, beating even BTE attendance numbers! A huge thank you to Petite Jupiter’s PJs ‘N PB&Js for sponsoring us tonight, commemorating the long-awaited return of a legend with comfort for the body and the soul! Now, get strapped in for the show of a lifetime as England’s own Royal Blood sets the tone for the night with a live performance of their latest single, “Mountains At Midnight”!

Perfect Quarter

Non-Title Champion vs Champion: FBE Television Champion Cactus Mike vs FBE Junior Heavyweight Champion Paddy Murphy
Opening in HUGE fashion is a first-time ever dream meeting between two of the most beloved members of the roster! On one side is the two-time Television Champion with SIX overall defences to his name, The Ark’s Cactus Mike! Recently having his own one-year anniversary celebration much like Blitz last week, he’s been an icon in every division he’s taken part in, from being a component of the thrilling 3-way rivalry with John and Jay Castle, to an intense Shining-esque blood feud with Happy, to being one of the most consistent Pure Rules competitors, taking the likes of Inferno and Apeirogone to their limits. Proving his mettle in the Shining Light League, tonight more than ever can put him in the conversation for being next in line!
On the other side is the current Junior Heavyweight Champion, the Sham-Rock ‘N Scot Connection’s Paddy Murphy! Following a career trajectory similar to the Cardiac Cactus himself in his first few months, he’s rapidly elevated himself from a youngblood to one of the most emotionally riveting performers in the company today, having taken the Junior Division by storm under the guidance of his Sensei and his Dojo. Further greatness surely ahead of the World’s Most Wanted, his 6-point tournament run more than proving his potential, this could be his moment of redemption that catapults him into the next stratosphere, another Ark member having been the only obstacle between him and the Semi Finals!
Prompt: Rebook The British Bulldog’s WWF Intercontinental Championship Reign (Max 1000 Words)

Petite Jupiter Invitational: Arslan Malik vs Ferdinand Maxim vs Guy Fawkes vs Mr. Calcote Miller vs Vix
It’s finally happening, laddies! Initially announced for the first-ever BTE, the Petite Jupiter Invitational was a Battle Royale scheduled to commemorate the legacy of the then recently retired Shining Light, with the winner earning an Intercontinental Championship shot. Though plans fell through, there’s no reason it shouldn’t take place on the first BTE-level show of the Pure Division! Whilst a secondary title doesn’t yet exist on Blitz, the winner of this match can definitely expect their name to be held in higher regards, leaving with a trophy they can cherish when looking back on the moment that elevated them to the next level, one competitor from this plucky spread of rising stars being immortalised.
Will it be the Ass-Kicker Arslan Malik punching a hole through the competition? Perhaps Le Prince de Paris Ferdinand Maxim can make his kingdom even more golden? Maybe former Junior Heavyweight Champion Guy Fawkes can break bank in another division? Could Big 4 Main Eventer Mr. Calcote Miller be in line for a return to glory? Or is the most synonymous with the original prize of this match, former FBC Intercontinental Champion Vix soaring into the stars?
Prompt: Book the next year of any championship of your choosing (Max 1000 Words)

Mark Steel vs Michael Menzies II
In recent weeks, something of a rivalry has begun to brew between Death to Juniors and their latest targets, the Sensei-led duo of the Sham-Rock ‘N Scot Connection. With Paddy Murphy taking DTJ’s Junior Title and Michael Menzies going to war with Joshua Epps and Mark Steel in back-to-back weeks, why stop there? When the Future-Proof last tested his skills against DTJ, he was lost, without direction, searching for a means of survival. But what difference a month makes, now a completely transformed star since replacing the Kalamity surname, finding himself in strong company, no longer to be soloed out by the vultures of the Heavyweight Division.
Still, he can’t solely rely on friends to make it big. A recent landslide victory in his favour on Blitz makes it appear as though he’s ready for Round Two against the Gatekeeper of New Talent, so exactly that will occur, Michael receiving a chance at redemption against the stable which has his number! In Peak Performance’s case, shutting down the Junior Revolution before it can fully take off its feet would be in his best interest, nothing sweeter than bragging about single-handedly being the cause of death of another competitor’s potential, Steel keeping his territory on lock from newcomers!
Prompt: Book Clash at the Castle II (Max 1000 Words)

Simon Brown vs Kentaro Sakamoto vs Travis Broski
Tournaments have oft been a means of elevating competitors closer to the brass ring, the gruelling schedules showing their true inner resilience and ability to maintain their skill even into the later rounds. For all three of these men, that statement couldn’t be truer.
Exhibit A: Simon Brown. Though his FBE tenure was brief, he smashed through the glass ceiling in a manner many are unable to, a run into the Semi Finals of the inaugural Gedo Classic being promptly followed up by him becoming the second-ever Junior Heavyweight Champion in just a month or so of joining FBE, putting himself on a list that’s spawned some of the biggest stars of the current era.
Exhibit B: Kentaro Sakamoto. Going from the third member of Semper Lucet to forever remembered for his performance in the inaugural Punish & Crush Tournament, his advancement to the Finals over championship competition made it clear as day what he could offer at his best, becoming a staple Heavyweight ever since, sharing iconic moments alongside PROSPECT.
Exhibit C: Travis Broski. Much like The Immortalizer, he too was launched into the next stratosphere with an inspiring Gedo Classic Semis campaign in its most recent edition, the Undercity Underdog going on to upset some of the most valued juggernauts in company history in its aftermath, now continuing to remain a threat to the top of the pecking order.
All three feasibly able to take on the entire world if they so please (and all Ape guys?), they’re going to have to confront their most unique challenge yet in shattering mirrors of themselves!
Prompt: Book GUNTHER until WrestleMania 40 (Max 1000 Words)

Unadulterated Quarter

James Scott vs Jason Beggs
When you look at the career James Scott has had, it’s hard not to envy the Purest Protagonist for his many accolades. Intercontinental Champion, the original Junior Champion Ace, inaugural Lifeline Classic Winner over Hall of Fame level competition, New Beginning III main eventer, he’s been around the block and then some. Inventing the model for what a newcomer to the company should resemble if they wish to be remembered, fearlessly running with the giants like he’s David, he’s surely inspired a generation, but what about those from his generation?
When one man dominates the rest, there’s to be casualties along the way, Jason Beggs being one of those who suffered from Scott’s meteoric rise, his name being forgotten in favour of the Aussie, despite Jason beating him in Scott’s multi-man debut. With three years passing since both first broke into the company, they find themselves in the same division again, making it only inevitable that their paths would cross again on the hunt for the Pure Title. So, why not now? Becoming Irresistible since his return, for Beggs this is the perfect opportunity at revenge by tossing James down the mountain this time in a Lion King moment, but as always, it’s Scott vs The World and he won’t be rolling over for anyone!
Prompt: Book the revival of Pete Dunne (Max 1000 Words)

Battle of the Best II: DTJ (Misery, Hunter Maguire, Joshua Epps) vs PROVINCE (Sebastian King, Erick Koeman, Karma) vs The RISE (Ripley, John LaGuardia, Victor Williams)
On 1000 days of FBE, three of the most iconic stables in the company’s history butted heads, British Ambition, Lifeline, and PRIDE Gang squaring off in the inaugural Battle of the Best, that match putting a bow to the end of those 9 men’s generation, a more modern school of FBE competition ensuing in its aftermath which blended two very different eras together. Of the new crop, three factions have been inseparable over the past year in every form they’ve come to pass, Death to Juniors, PROVINCE, and The RISE all being tied at the hip.
WarGames earlier this year seeing The RISE’s predecessor, J.E.M, defeat DTJ, and PROVINCE subsequently debuting at DTJ’s expense, the critically acclaimed group has taken enough from both squadrons, finally getting a chance to exact their revenge on both in one fell swoop! PROVINCE and The RISE aren’t without their own issues either, the Shining Light League sparking friction between them in block matches, all 3 factions trading victories over the course of the competition, DTJ and The RISE even putting representatives through to the Semi Finals whilst PROVINCE costed the remainder of their men from moving on. In a race to prove themselves the next big things of the company, one faction will walk out here with a trophy to their name and a score at last settled!
Prompt: Book Ilja Dragunov on the Main Roster (Max 1 Part Per Person; 1000 Words each)

EED vs JOHN
Whilst FBE’s been a breeding ground for a wide range of colourful personalities, there’s been few that’ve acted as ‘anti-personalities’, deviating from the supernatural world to crack down on those they’ve felt to be caricatures of what a true wrestler should be. The most shining example of all in the Wild West was EED, standing out against the variety pack roster with his scathing, no-nonsense attitude, drilling a hole in the skull of anyone, both on the mic and in the ring, who he deemed unbecoming to the sport which paid his bills and subsequently having his way with their tattered remains.
Though no one has since quite managed to capture the aura of the Notorious, few might’ve argued JOHN to be his successor. All caps, plain and simple, the Misfit’s been unlike his exotic peers, simply a freak of nature uprooting anything in his path. A career marked by gold much like the former Television and Commonwealth Champion, JOHN with his own record-breaking Junior Heavyweight Championship reign, tonight he gets a chance to step to an OG as one of these two prove themselves to be the undisputed real man’s man of FBE!
Prompt: Book Drew McIntyre’s Return (Max 1000 Words)

Nate Matthews vs T.M Imran
Before T.M Imran was an official member of the FBE roster, he was one of the guinea pigs of the Trials system, and though he managed to win over majority of his examiners, there was but one he simply couldn’t crack – Nate Matthews. A Living Legend by this company’s standards and understandably one of the toughest to impress given his unmatched laundry list of accomplishments, from his many firsts like walking in as World Champion into the first BTE’s main event or being the first Grand Slam Winner, 8 championship reigns to his name, to being the Ace at one point, it would take a hell of a lot more to catch his attention.
In the wrestling business they say ‘to be the man you have to beat the man’, so what better way to gain the respect of the OG than through wrestling him? Nate competing in the first-ever Pure Rules match in company history, defeating him in a category his name’s been forever tied to would certainly give the Fifth Asian Tiger’s career its defining moment after two Television Championship reigns that put him on the map, the two Heyman Classic entrants to get warmed up here ahead of a bid to make BTE’s main event this year!
Prompt: TBD

Regal Quarter

Bong vs Bengt Holm
The crossover appeal of FBE has brought in a myriad of names over the years from all walks of life, but above all perhaps the most influential is Bong. A staunch anti-racism campaigner from the world of LLR, he’s considered royalty in his home promotion, a G1 Climax Winner among other lauded accomplishments living the unemployed life of raising two families yet still sparing the time to whoop anyone who gives him grief. He’s Scottish, he’s unhinged, and he’ll rawdog you back to wherever you came from, no expenses paid.
If you hold a popularity contest, Bong would take the crown, but someone who’s rapidly been gaining recognition since joining in the last couple months is the one they call KillKill, Bengt Holm accruing quite the name on both Firestorm and Blitz, most recently putting up a valiant effort against the Junior Champion. With Kojot in his ear and a Bong-like affinity to deal with his problems using his fists, this Thai-tanic could be the one they warn the icebergs about, the unsinkable Bengt headed to the helm of his division if he can outshine the sheer star power of his adversary here!
Prompt: Book the push of Maximum Male Models (Max 1000 Words)

Code Blue vs Jay Castle III
Resistance III was supposed to be the greatest night of Code Blue’s life until it wasn’t. Mugged by The Aether Aces before the match could even begin and having his eye stabbed by their latest recruit, former PROSPECT member Jay Castle, he was taken out of commission that night, though it had him return even more driven, and this time with a vengeance. The issues between these two extend long before that night however, butting heads all the way back in the main event of Blitz III one year ago, where the Hometown Hero narrowly upset the now shared longest reigning champion in FBE history.
Proceeding to cross paths again as part of the famed Ark/PROSPECT rivalry, Blue getting his win back in an Intercontinental Championship Eliminator that kickstarted his recent meteoric rise, they’ve never been ones to see eye to eye, and especially after what Jay did to Blue, the chance of it ever happening is dead in the water. They say an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, but that’s the least of the Pasadena Paralyser’s concerns, not letting Castle slip by him this time as he hunts down his rival only days removed from his first-ever singles World Heavyweight Championship match, fatigued yet with the drive of an army of 1000 men to strike down with furious anger to settle their score once and for all!
Prompt: Book a Nigel McGuinness Return Run (Max 1000 Words)

Atlas Rogue vs Ethan Fadely VII
When it comes to utterly personal rivalries, Atlas Rogue and Ethan Fadely’s is very much up there. Stretching all the way back to 2020, when Sol Ace took the Son of the Roses’ World Heavyweight Championship, a mutual hatred was sparked between the polar opposites, Fadely eventually having his revenge in his unstoppable 2022 return, taking Rogue to mercy at New Beginning IV. After a bloody WarGames between Infinite POWER and REVOLT, the two met again late last year, trading victories, Atlas besting Fadely at his own game, and Ethan getting the Godfather of Pure Rules back under his district. Once Ethan formed The Aether Aces with Atlas’s former partner, the siren began to sing her song, luring the two to one more match, one year on from their previous NB encounter. And once again, it was Fadely callousing his foe, leaving him with horrific injuries to tie up their saga 3-3.
3 months have passed since and Rogue hasn’t been able to forget, the scars he sees in the mirror each morning reminding him of what must be done. Now, fully healed up, King Blitz is back for one final dance with his career rival to break the tie between them, adamant to round out his incredible Pure Rules run by beating the one that got away! In Ethan’s case however, it’s all about ending Atlas for good this time, the Portlander wanting to add to The Aether Aces stretch of top-billing stars they’ve buried in a ditch, a tiebreaking victory the most crucial one available! Will Atlas start the Summer with a dead rose, or can Ethan crush the King’s crown under his boot? Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s the Final Rodeo between Rogue and Fadely!
Prompt: Book Forbidden Door II (Max 1000 Words)

Excellence Quarter

British Rounds: Desmond Caid vs Capital STEEZ VIII
Unlike the consistent hatred brimming between the last two, the saga between Desmond Caid and Capital STEEZ has followed a rather different trajectory. Though seesawing between mutual loathing and respect, at the centre of it all has always lain a consistent power struggle between two of the elite in their quests to prove themselves the undisputed best. Starting with the opener of the first-ever Carnage Tour – which has gone on to become a tradition between the two – their story has served as a timeline of King Capital’s growing stardom against the first Ace of FBE. The first year resulting in constant failures for STEEZ, from Carnage to an Intercontinental Championship match to WarGames to the Heyman Classic to BTE II’s main event, the winds of change finally blew in his direction come 2021, Steelo scoring his first win over the Maestro in the Lifeline Classic.
Marking the start of STEEZ’s rise into the Ace spot once occupied by Caid, the narrative began to shift in his favour, coming back from a 4-0 deficit to best him each subsequent year at Carnage, with tag team victories in the Battle of the Best and Three Stages of Hell along the way, this year putting him up to 4-3. Now, they’re set to meet yet again as STEEZ receives his chance to tie up the saga, whilst Desmond looks to break his dry spell against his iconic foe. What makes this match so unique compared to the rest however is the stipulation in place. Always known for their lengthy classics against each other, for the very first time they’re going to meet under an entirely different ruleset, the British Rounds system testing their ability to work a much, much quicker pace! Caid on home turf much like he was back at Unbreakable II, if there’s anytime to cut STEEZ off, it’s here, whilst for the Bossman, writing over the crushing memories of London would be in his best interest in finally cementing himself as having Desmond’s number!
Prompt: Book Hideo Itami if he skipped NXT and went directly to the Main Roster (Max 3 Parts; 1000 Words each)

Non-Title: FBE World Heavyweight Champion Inferno vs Petite Jupiter III
After years of grinding yet being forced to settle for second best, 2023 has undisputedly been Inferno’s year, ruling the roost with an iron fist from the jump, a Booker in the Bank cash-in mere weeks in making him Double Champion alongside his X Division (Pure) Championship reign. Embarking on a murderous run with the support of The Aether Aces, he’s crushed old and new faces alike week after week in everything from a draining 90-Minute Iron Man match to a thrilling British Rounds showdown to an emotional Title vs Career classic, diving further and further past the point of no return with his bastardly streak. Sitting atop the Pure ruleset with the most matches and wins in history, using it as a means to stomp out fledgling talent and address unfinished business, it seems as though there’s no one who can stop Baba Blitz.
…That is, no one that’d been currently active. Making a bombshell return after over a year of being sidelined with injury, appearing on Blitz’s one-year anniversary to present the trophy to the Shining Light League Winner, a tournament named in his honour, Petite Jupiter whipped Buckingham Palace into a frenzy with his appearance, London giving him the perfect homecoming. One of only 2 people the Aether Ace has never beaten in his career, Inferno was quick to interrupt his British Ambition brother, though seeming more like strangers with how much has changed between them since their last meeting. Goading him into one more match by pushing his buttons like the master manipulator he’s proven to be, citing the Shining Light’s lack of victories over reigning World Champions despite his Hall of Fame career, the ever-valiant PJ accepted, setting the stage for a long-awaited blockbuster end to their trilogy!
No shortage of Pure Rules experience himself, PJ the Grandfather to Blitz if Inferno’s its Baba, he holds a win over the Brummie Bastard under the ruleset, having faced off under it at the first FBE Anniversary Show after a despaired Inferno had turned his back on his brothers, feeling abandoned by them in his time of need, PJ subsequently bringing him back to the light. Later also sullying Inferno’s first BITB cash-in, which he’s since perfected, keeping his prized Intercontinental Championship from him, he’s held his former World Tag Team Championship partner’s number for the past 3 years, but now, it remains to be seen if the story will be any different, the two Britons colliding one final time in their home country as all their experiences craft the perfect closing chapter to their tale!
Prompt: Book a main event push for PAC (Max 1000 Words)

FBE Pure Championship: Shining Light League Winner FBE World Tag Team Champion Dr. Logan Wright (c) vs Apeirogone 3rd Defence
The term ‘Final Boss’ isn’t thrown about lightly. Throughout FBE history, only one man’s been truly synonymous with the term. They say it’s anyone’s season until this man comes around. They claim he’s the type of guy to fly down to Hell and come back with gift shop souvenirs. World Championships, two-hour Gauntlets, Three Stages of Hell, he’s been there and won them all. Wins over damn near every single person that’s come to matter throughout the company’s history, he’s that guy. Legendary factions, shows named after him, an entire cult of personality backing him as the company’s Commissioner, what more could you want out of a person’s resume? Well, it’s not about what the people want, or what he himself wants, but rather, what another man yearns for. The chance to immortalise his name into wrestling history. The chance to join only four others in their abilities to beat this man. The chance to cement themselves as a Final Boss forever.
Dr. Logan Wright, reigning two-time FBE Pure Champion off the back of being one of only two to pin the current World Champion this year, reigning FBE World Tag Team Champion via ending the longest championship reign of any title in company history after winning 2023’s Punish & Crush, inaugural Shining Light League Winner by sweeping through 6 matches front-to-back, and the man that will carry his title into the first-ever BTE-equivalent Blitz show, P.U.R.E, has selected none other than Apeirogone to be the third challenger to his Pure Title!
For months, the Medicinal Magician has silently watched as people have lauded the accomplishments of his Ark brethren against the Infinity Ace. Cactus Mike almost taking the man to a draw. Code Blue ending his 1347-day undefeated singles streak. Kaze Tanaka sending him into retirement. But what about him? What about the final member of The Ark? What about the licensed medical practitioner that’s on the best run of his entire life despite the constant demons rattling around inside his brain? They’ve all had their chance, so why can’t he? Forced to wrestled with the “can never beat a veteran legend” stigma for years, he’s decided to put down his stethoscope and declare no longer! Even after there’s no reading on his ECG and 0 of his 206 bones have been reduced to dust, he wants to the world to remember his name!
So, it begs the question – What happens when one of the greatest of all-time steps outside his comfort zone and into the kingdom of another man to fight for only one of two championships he doesn’t have hung up on his wall? Will Apeirogone avenge his previous losses to The Ark by taking away the prize that breathed life back into the soul of the Doctor in his first-ever BTE-style main event? Or will Logan Wright silence the critics until the end of time, keeping his undefeated streak extending back to January, keeping his unbeaten Blitz Big 4 streak, and keeping his Pure Championship by felling a legend? It’s the Final Boss of Blitz versus the Final Boss of FB to close out P.U.R.E!
Prompt: Book Kenny Omega until Double or Nothing 2024 (Max 1000 Words)

All bookings are due on June 3rd at 11PM EST, so don’t delay on those. Fourteen star-studded matches on the card featuring 39 unique competitors – the most there’s ever been on any FBE show in history – let’s make this a memorable first P.U.R.E, lads! Pure rules.

2023.05.28 22:49 SpiderDoctor Accepted Applicant Profiles (2022-2023)

As the 2023 cycle comes to a close, congratulations to everyone who has been accepted MD, DO, or MD/PhD! (For those stuck on WLs, it's not over until it's over.) Primary submission opens this week for the 2023-2024 cycle, and many current applicants are curious how last cycle went for their fellow premedditors.
If you are interested in information on the current state of medical school admissions, AAMC and AACOM publish reports annually on applicants and matriculants. For AAMC, there is the Matriculating Student Questionnaire and the Medical School Enrollment Survey (more here and here). For AACOM, there is the Applicant and Matriculant Report (more here). The number of first-year MD students has increased by 35% from 2002-2003 to 2020-2021, and this number is projected to reach 41% by 2025-2026 [1]. As of 2019, the number of first-year DO students has increased by 186% compared to 2002 [1]. Combined enrollment at MD and DO schools has increased 59% from 2002, with about half of that growth coming from DO schools [1].
Here, we invite all premedditors who were accepted to medical school in the 2022 cycle to post their applicant profiles for our current and future medical school hopefuls. Some comment etiquette: no bashing high-stat applicants for having high stats, no bashing low-stat applicants for getting in with low stats, no bashing URMs for being URM (rule 1, rule 11).
All applicant profiles posted to this thread are the experience of an individual and function as anecdotal evidence. Every applicant is different and has their own strengths and weaknesses! Use MSAR and the ChooseDO Explorer for aggregate data.

We love sankeys! You can browse individual cycle results here

I made a Hunt Showdown TTRPG conversion kit for Call of Cthulhu: Down Darker Trails
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1qeXxaLFYb8S_laAn4muCBRpiGUCkAHQj?usp=sharing
https://preview.redd.it/t0jeb1nitn2b1.jpg?width=547&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a24beac0b1a672959312d19a6270aeaaae461cc
This little Call of Cthulhu add-on (specifically designed to be used in conjunction with Call of Cthulhu: Down Darker Trails) gives you the basic tools to play a Hunt Showdown tabletop game. You will need the Call of Cthulhu: Down Darker Trails book to play (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/221416/Down-Darker-Trails).
This conversion is far from perfect (and we use some house rules, like combining all perception-related skills into one skill called 'perception' and all athletic-related skills into one skill called 'athletics). I have also chosen not to convert all of Hunt's guns into CoC stat blocks because there are far too many guns for me to want to do that. Instead, I recommend finding the closest firearm in the Down Darker Trails book and using that as a starting point to make the gun of your choosing.
Disclaimer: While I would certainly welcome suggestions, I'm not seeking critical feedback, just supplying this so other tabletop rpg players can have fun in the hunt world. There is also a PDF fillable character sheet that you can use to make your character. I know there are a ton of typos and some of the stat blocks and traits might need to be adjusted by your DM if they are unbalanced. Lore was based on HazmatFTW's videos, so big shoutout to them.
For an idea of what kind of game you can run with this, I am running a campaign taking place right after Lynch kills Dr. Huff Jones and the AHA is experiencing a major power vacuum. Someone in the AHA leadership team is a mole working for the Night of the Hunt doomsday cult and the players have to figure out who is the mole and chase them into DeSalle to kill them. Players can choose which Legendary hunters to do quests for and therefore help them rise to leadership roles in the AHA. Right now, they are in New Orleans seeking a witch that was chased to Louisiana by Circe (the Witch Hunter).

2023.05.28 16:28 Glaurung_Quena The 8 page Heinlein outline that became Spider Robinson's Variable Star

Because someone asked me about a comment I made on another post, here's an edited version of a writeup I did back in 2011 of the 8 page outline from Heinlein's papers that became Spider Robinson's Variable Star.
When I first Read Variable Star a few years after it came out, I thought it was OK but disappointing. It's a Spider Robinson novel, and while I enjoyed the first few books of his I read, he has a limited range and by the time I read this one I had gotten bored with him.
But, a huge deal was made in the afterword and the cover blurbs about the source of the novel being a book outline by Heinlein that he had never expanded to a full novel - an 8 page outline that tragically had lost its last page by the time Robinson got hold of it. (I don't know how much of the story of the missing page is marketing BS, but there's no reason Robinson would have been unable to get a copy of the last page if he really wanted to see it) .
Anyway, I got curious and went looking for the outline. Like every other scrap of paper from his writing career that Heinlein didn't destroy, it's in the UC Santa Cruz library, and scans of everything in the Heinlein collection are available for sale online at the Heinlein Archive website. The 8 page outline (which is complete, no missing last page) is part of the "Story ideas, part 1" PDF, catalog number WRTG201a-01.
(ETA: the back end of the Heinlein Archives website has not been updated for a very long time and it's impossible to buy the PDF from them at this point. I am both surprised and amused that a libertarian organization would be incompetent at taking my money. )
I paid $2 and got a 150 page PDF, including the 8 page outline and a bunch of other quite interesting material - very much worth the pittance.
TLDR: The outline is clearly for a Heinlein juvenile. While Heinlein never turned the outline into a novel himself, he did did not abandon it as the marketing for Variable Star would imply. Rather, he took one core idea (near-light speed travel as a form of time travel into the future) and used it as the basis for Time For the Stars. Then he took the other core idea (poor boy suddenly finds himself dealing with a family more wealthy and powerful than most governments) and incorporated it into Citizen of the Galaxy. Finally he took the last idea from the outline (boy and girl seemingly separated by one-way time travel into the future discover that their ages are not incompatible after all because they've both travelled forward), and used it in The Door Into Summer.
In 2011 when I wrote this up, I could not find anyone talking about the outline, so I wrote a detailed summary on my blog. Here's that summary:
The outline is eight single space typewritten pages, plus 12 handwritten notecards. The notecards are pages 115-128 and the typed outline pages 129-136 of the PDF. I'll be focusing on the typescript, which I can read without straining my eyes. The notecards are very brief, so we're not missing much this way.
The MS begins "Notes for a novel - 5 Nov 1955," which places it (going by publication dates) after Tunnel in the Sky and before Double Star or Time for the Stars. The second line gives a working title "The Stars are a Clock," and then there are several other titles handwritten at the top of the page:
Dr. Einstein's Clock, The Starship Nautilus, The Starship Naughty Girl, The Star Clock, The Einstein Clock
It's not clear whether the two "The Starship X" ones are meant to be subtitles for "Dr Einstein's Clock" or standalone titles in themselves. Page 2 is headed "Star Clock (The Star Clock, maybe)" and the rest of the outline has "The Star Clock-[page number]" as a running head.
The only named characters are Joel Johnston, age 18, the protagonist; Jinny Jones/aka Jennifer Conrad (Joel's steady high school girlfriend, age 17); and "Mr. Conrad," Jinny's grandfather and head of the Conrad financial empire. A few other characters are described in terms of the real-world people the character should be modelled after (in speaking of the starship, he says "I think maybe Ron Hubbard is her skipper").
This was clearly intended as a juvenile novel - Joel is 18, and when saying he "should have more girl trouble aboard ship," Heinlein adds "(keep it clean, of course!)" One reason Heinlein set the outline aside and started over may be that he decided he couldn't get a book whose plot was centred on a romance accepted for the (at the time) sexless juvenile market.
Joel and Jinny are in love, but Joel is an orphan with no money and he thinks he needs to get through college and start a career before he can get married. If Joel can't get the scholarship he's applied for, then it's going to take even longer, since he'll have to work his way though school.
Having gotten Joel to admit that he would like to marry Jinny if only there was a way, Jinny lets him know that her surname is not Jones but Conrad, and that she is not just a Conrad, but the "'crown princess' of the Conrad industrial empire... which is larger than the Hanseatic League, Rothschild family, and General Motors combined and just smaller than space itself."
Two paragraphs in a row start with a variation of Joel "finally gets it through his head" that Jinny is wealthy enough to pay his way though school, so Joel is yet another variation on the "smart but slow witted youth" that Heinlein used as protagonist again and again.
There's a couple of paragraphs mentioning the marriage and courtship customs of the time, which again probably would not have been acceptable in a novel for the juvenile market: "some discussion of 'student contract,' the trial marriage used" by most college students who wish to get married before they graduate, rejected by Jinny, ("marriage isn't a ticket to an amusement park") who wants an old fashioned life long marriage.
Jinny doesn't "park, diddle, go on no-chaperone weekends... she is old-fashioned and chinchy" because she has been taught since age three that she has a responsibility to the Conrad family to produce an heir with an acceptable father - and she has decided that Joel is that man.
Joel "finally gathers" that he has been tapped not just to marry into the Conrad family but to produce its heirs, and is dubious about being a kept man/prince consort. Jinny says "it isn't like that at all!" and makes him promise to go talk to her grandfather about it.
All this takes just over a page of the outline.
The next morning, Joel is summoned to an audience with Mr. Conrad. There is only one "Mr. Conrad" at any one time, all the other male Conrads go by "Mr. Joseph, Mr. Robert" and so on. Conrad takes Joel's consent for granted and proceeds to tell him how he will live his life from then on -- he will be educated, trained, and groomed to take a top executive position. Joel was thoroughly investigated before Jinny was given permission to propose to him. Mr. Conrad knows all about him - including confidential medical/psychological records.
Joel objects, respectfully, saying that having his life planned out for him like this is not his cup of tea. Conrad brushes his objections aside and leaves, failing to realize that he's just been turned down.
Joel is unable to contact Jinny after this ("she has been gently kidnapped, of course - family stuff"), and once he fails to respond to further messages from Conrad, the screws start to turn: his scholarship (controlled by the Conrad foundation) is turned down.
Unable to continue school, sore at Jinny for not contacting him, and at his wits end, "he sees the ad for 'gentlemen adventurers'" applies, is accepted, and is shortly on his way to Beta Aurigae.
All this takes a page and a half of outline, most of it devoted to a detailed summary of Mr. Conrad's interview with Joel.
Now there's just under two pages of background material, detailing several things:
First, the economics of space travel in this future society - relativistic starships that go out on voyages of exploration often fail to come back, but those that do return invariably show an immense profit, more than enough to pay for the lost ships. Starship exploration is one area where the Conrad empire has competitors, and the ad Joel sees is not affiliated with the Conrad conglomerate.
Second, the nature of Joel's poverty - he has an "orphan's allowance" which ran out on his 18th birthday. Joel's father bought some stock for him but the market shifted and Joel had to sell it low to pay for his last (post 18th birthday) semester at prep school. Without the scholarship, Joel has no money at all. He could do many things at this point, from indentured service to a stint in the military, but he's so discombobulated by the whole Jinny/Conrad business that he is in a "what the hell frame of mind" and signs up for this star voyage.
Third, the starship in question is "a pile of junk," old and poorly equipped, carrying low value cargo (emigrants), with low likelihood of returning, but Joel doesn't know that. "She will be a quaint mixture of madhouse and hellship." Subjectively, the trip out and back (to a star 10 light years away) will take a year, but 40 years will pass on Earth.
Fourth, there's a half page of brainstorming, with Heinlein throwing out multiple ideas as to what may happen (is the skipper incompetent, or is he in on a stock market manipulation scheme to delay the ship's return? Perhaps Joel still has some stock his father bought in an old starship that is long overdue, which he instructs his solicitor to invest in Joel's starship if it ever pays off? Perhaps they pay off, but his solicitor put them in a "safe" investment instead, and Joel is penniless - again! - at the end of his trip?)
Joel applies to go on the starship, along with a large crowd of "down-at heels rabble" and he is among the few provisionally accepted. They'd like him to marry one of the single women who have also been provisionally accepted, but he'll have none of that. "He is accepted anyhow and we rush him aboard."
And then there's a bit more than a page of further brainstorming about what happens aboard ship - with an note that "we've got plenty to happen when he gets back; what we need now is adventure and humour" - and ideas for plot twists on the ship and on the alien planet.
Heinlein makes several mid-course changes in the story: the back-at-home duration of the voyage gets increased to 60 years, with Joel ageing just three years; the ship goes through two names (Nautilus and Naughty Girl) and goes from making an out-and-back voyage to making a 4 or 5 leg journey. He tosses out the idea that an emigrant on the original trip out from Earth (then a 5 year old girl) grows up to be someone he might want to marry on his return to that colony world, and the idea that another girl from his high school is on the crew of the ship, and he falls for her, but she marries one of the officers instead.
One thing he is certain of is that while Joel's ship is still travelling, FTL ships are perfected and the relativistic starships become obsolete. He also mentions that Joel will find a "space bat" as a "cute and cuddlesome and smart e.-t." pet.
Eventually Joel has to go back to Earth (whether his stocks end up making him well-heeled or broke Heinlein waffles on), still single. A page is devoted to discussing the "Out-of-Phase Club, Anachron Lounge, etc" and Joel's meeting with the secretary of the club, who explains to him the club's purpose of helping relativistic starship crew by acting as trainers/translators and as a place where they can meet people from their own time period, since they are almost always going to find Earth's society, language, and customs to be bafflingly different from when they left.
Finally, the last page and a half of the outline is devoted to Joel's arranging to meet Jinny (who he imagines is now almost 80), the girl he ran away from and who has continued to haunt him, keeping him from marrying any of the "half a dozen other nice girls" he met on his travels. After getting to the Conrad house, he first sees Jinny's granddaughter and great-granddaughter, and (once again) is slow on the uptake when Jinny (still young) finally walks into the room.
Because, of course, she took a starship out too, after marrying, giving birth to the requisite heir, and then finding herself both widowed and orphaned in quick succession. So, sixty Earth years later, they are now the same age.
They fight, they make up, they "clinch." They decide, since they are both now anachronisms from the past, to buy their own starship (Joel's old ship) and travel around relativistically, coming back to earth every century or so to "see what's new."
(ETA: As you can see, this is basically a very preliminary version of "Time for the stars." I think the main reason the outline got shoved in a drawer and TftS became a very different book is probably because Heinlein realized he was not going to be allowed to have his juvenile protagonists be interested in marriage. But he also kept the outline in his story ideas file, and clearly he went back to it at least twice. The Conrad family seems to be a precursor to the Rudbecks in Citizen of the Galaxy, and the "oh, the girl I like must have grown old and aged while I time travelled into the future... oh wait, she is still young because she also travelled to the future separately from me, now we can get married, yay" plot device reappears in The Door Into Summer.)
Now a bit about Robinson's novel: it is extremely faithful to the first five pages of the outline (up to the point where Joel leaves on the starship). Robinson used just a few of the brainstorming ideas Heinlein put in page 6 (the trip), and ignored page 7 (Joel's return to Earth) completely (and it is claimed that he didn't have page 8, which is the reunion of Joel and Jinny). Robinson also borrowed some material from Time For the Stars, the Heinlein juvenile which did get written on the theme of relativistic star travel - there's mention of telepaths keeping the starship in touch with Earth, for instance.
Then (avoiding spoilers here) the ending of Variable Star utterly abandons the outline (well before the alleged missing page 8) and strikes off in an entirely new direction. By staying so faithful to the initial outline, then diverging so widely from it, Robinson ended up with a book that egregiously violates the Chekov's Gun rule - the ending of Variable Star comes from nowhere, with very little buildup or foreshadowing, while the beginning of the book puts a good many plot threads in motion that are discarded abruptly without resolution to make way for the shock ending.
Finally, a bit about the other material to be found in the "Story Ideas part 1" PDF: There are numerous newspaper and magazine clippings that Heinlein evidently found evocative; two articles by Jerry Pournelle (one typescript, one journal reprint); some handwritten pages that I did not try to decipher; 19 pages of worldbuilding notes for "A Martian named Smith" aka Stranger in a Strange Land, dated 1949; and finally two typed letters, one to "Sarge" (dec 1963), and one (missing the first page, probably from the same time period) to "Buz," both talking about race relations. Buz is probably F.M. Busby.

2023.05.28 13:21 petehere Magazine/Book/Music scan, hyperlink, pdf?

Hi, I’d like to be able to use some free or low cost software without subscription on my iPad to do the following for my magazines/Books/Guitar music when I’m travelling. Anyone got any recommendations?
  1. Scan possibly with ocr
  2. Be able to add hyperlink to the table of contents for relevant document chapters
  3. Export as pdf with hyperlinks in doc
Optionally:
  1. Create a table of contents page if there isn’t one and add hyperlinks to the relevant document chapter page
  2. Add additional pages later I.e. add a notes page for the guitar music scan on how to play it after I have practiced
  3. Edit or place new text over sections of pages post scan or in the pdf for game books that have been updated with a faq for the rules
Thanks for any help

2023.05.28 06:17 kburn90 Godforsaken Armor Question

Just got the PDF from Backerkit the other day, and come across the different issue with armor rules. While we seem to have gotten some clarification on the intent of Speed Effort Additional Cost in the basic book, something has jumped out at me in the Godforsaken book.
Page 37, Bottom half of the page there is a Armor table.
Light armours listed have a SEAC of 1 except Heavy Cloth and Padded which are purposesly worse. Medium Armors all have SEAC of 2 except Dwarven Breastplate and Elven Chainmail which in their descriptions directly call out that they have a SEAC less then normal for their armor type. However Fullplte and Scale both are both listed as having a SEAC of 0, as if a Full-Plate Costing 1500gp and providing more protection then a 8000gp Dwarven breastplate. I would have thought for sure that this could not have been intentional however something else was wrong.
In the table the coloum for Heavy Armor has Price listed above where the Armor bonus should be. Going to the Cypher Standard Referance Document, this has been corrected meaning someone must have looked at the section again but did they really just miss the SEAC being unintuative by accident or is this really the true intent.
